hard drive about to go out...need advice

okay, i've had my tivo brand tivo S2 80 hour for over a year. i'm out of warranty and don't have a best buy service plan. i talked with tivo and for $140 they'll replace the hard drive.

well, i could go ahead and get a hard drive upgrade from weaknees or somewhere similar since i have to replace the hard drive anyway. is there any difference in picking a larger capacity drive? i.e., any danger of them going out more so than a lower capacity drive?

are these upgrade kits easy to install?

All hard drives will eventually fail regardless of size. They have motors and components that will eventually wear out.

You are on the right track to buy from one of the Vendor links above since you will get a larger drive at a cheaper price than what TiVo charges. Most of the kits come with very complete instructions and as long as you are not the type to skip steps when doing things it is as simple as opening the case, unmounting and disconnecting the wires from your old drive, and then reversing the steps.

In either case, TiVo or upgrade kit, you will lose all your recordings and Season Pass/Wishlist settings so if you do not already have them written down, you may want to do that before a complete failure.

Good luck,

Copy the data to a new drive in the PC b4 the drive goes out. Then reformat the old drive and use it for a secondary drive IF YOU DARE.... :D:D:D
