Tivo or Replaytv

Well I'm still stuck on what to purchase for a new PVR. The only choices are Tivo or Replaytv. Here's my question, from what I read about both, replay seems to offer the same features as Tivo but has a couple newer features like broadband and component output for video. I'm not trying to start anything, but can anybody shed any light on the pros and cons to each brand? I'm really starting to get confused with all this stuff.

Go to Circuit City, buy both, try them out, and return the one you don't want.

I have both and they each have their strong points. You really need to decide for yourself and it is mainly a usability issue.

Beware of restocking fees. At least one CC near me introduced a 15% restocking fee yesterday for opened merchandise.

RPTV's component outputs are only good fopr computer-generated menus, as the video that is being recorded is coming through an S-video or an RF input. Also, RPTV may be going out, so beware of the lifetime EPG. because of this, i would automatically buy a TiVo or make a BTV/MythTV computer system.

ReplayTV doesn't appear to be doing any marketing and it is very difficult to find one in any of the stores I shop. If you are comfortable with the fact that TiVo outsells ReplayTV by a large margin maybe 8 to 1, although the actual number is difficult to determine, and like the features ReplayTV offers it is a good product to own. In addition to my TiVos, I own a couple of old Panasonic Showstopper ReplayTV PVRs which have been great since the final software upgrade. Both products reliably allow me to record and watch TV programs and since either is only an interim product with their analog tuners until digital television takes over, buy the one that offers the features you want.

Replay has nicer networking and video extraction features, TiVo is better for timeshifting. If you just want to record your shows and watch them, TiVo if far superior. If you are really "into" archiving your shows and doing other wonky things with the recorded video, than Replay is what you want.
