failing hard drive (backup) question

I added a 120 GB Samsung HD to my HDVR2 to make it a total of 145 hours about two months ago. Thanks to the great help from WeaKneesNow. I am getting signs that a hard drive may be going out. It is pausing randomly for a second or two while watching recorded shows. Guess its called stopples. There were no problems after the upgrade until now. I cannot hear any difference from the hd's.

I want to take them both out and do a backup then test the drives with hutil and diskspeed32. I already made a backup before the upgrade, but want to make another now so that I can keep all of my recorded shows.

I'm rusty on how I did the original backup. But I can figure that one out. My main concern is what happens if the 120gb hard drive is bad. Can I unmarry them and put the original back in till I can get a new one? Or should I wait and just extract the backup from the bad 120gb to the new one? I think I read that I can't unmarry, but want to confirm.

I've had the HDVR2 for a couple of years, so I am thinking it is the newer (120gb) HD going bad. But not sure. Like I said, it worked fine and completely filled up with recordings about two months ago. Any thoughts from someone who has been through this?

Thanks,
durst

A backup including recordings would be the same size as the drive set - 160Gb! There's no reason not to make a fresh compressed backup, though.

You unmarry the drives by restoring the backup to the drive you want to use in the TiVo. Your recordings will not survive this.

I'd agree the newer drive is the more likey culprit. If you want to save your recordings you'll have to use dd to clone the failing disk on to a replacement.
