Century City Canceled

...3 and out. The article linked below mentions low ratings opposite American Idol....duh...who would have guessed that?

It was pretty poor writing and acting though, but I was prepared to see it mature for one season....

CBS cancelled "Century City" after four airings, due to dismal ratings. There are believed to be 9 episodes produced, meaning the last five will probably go unaired -- unless CBS burns them off in the summer or on a Saturday.

Tuesday's broadcast averaged 7.7 million viewers, less than "The Guardian" does even in reruns.

"The Guardian" will return next week with a rerun.

Typical. It was too high a concept for the CBS audience anyway. I'm one of the about 8 people who actually liked this show. Sure, there was room for it to grow, but hell... The concept was very interesting.

Guess I'll delete my SP as well as the episodes I have recorded. I watched the pilot and was very distracted by the overabundance of makeup used on Nestor Carbonel (sp).

Posted by: ronsch

I would have given this show a look but not on Tuesday at 9:00. I only have one TiVo!

Posted by: Graymalkin

Now had they done "Star Trek: JAG" -- that would have gone somewhere. :)

H'mm. Catherine Bell and Zoe McLellan (PO Coates) in Starfleet uniforms. I'd watch that.

I would've canceled it before airing any episodes.

The networks ought to just have a dumping bin somewhere; like a "Not Good Enough for Prime Time" cable channel jointly owned by all of them so these things never have to interfere with their regularly scheduled reality show crap and their sports programs that overrun their time slots every week.

No luck with Catherine Bell, but Zoe McLellan can be seen in a Starfleet uniform. She was in the Voyager episode "Lower Decks."

<melt> That smile... Bajoran girls are hot.

ARRGGGHHHH!!!!! Yet another decent show bites the dust. Not that it's a surprise. The only eps they didn't cancel were the Tuesday shows, and the only people who'd see it in that slot are those with two tuners.

Posted by: allan

It wasn't a GREAT show, but it was a decent one. Better than 90% of the crap they show.

Their treatment of the future was odd at best... they have bionic eyes, but everyone still has haircuts from today? Nanites can give you a complete virtual experience, however no new clothing trends? Yes, people would still be wearing suit and ties, but look at photos of lawyers from 25 years ago and today!

Yep. I tried to record it once and got an hour of basketball (by FAR my least favorite sport) and Greg Gumble's face instead.

Posted by: TonyD79

Actually amazing. The show has been jerked around by basketball and they are dropping it already? Makes little sense to me. You can only judge a show when it is on at the same time for a few weeks in a row.

I dunno, the show was REALLY REALLY bad. I watched because the premise was good, and it looked really really pretty in HD. But the writing was god awful and a petrified tree is less wooden then the acting on that show.

Posted by: hookbill

I saw the pilot and I liked it, did a SP. Second show I fell asleep (not the shows fault). The third show TiVo recorded something else.

Well, at least I didn't get attached to it.

Posted by: TonyD79

Yeah, Brooks Brothers suits have changed soooo much since 1979.

Merged two threads on the same topic...

They were putting this show up against 24 actually, at least this past week, so what did they expect. I kind of liked the show but I didn't watch the last one because 24 is on at the same time and I only have one Tivo. If they waited for 8 more weeks, they probably wouldn't have too much trouble with that time slot.

March Madness is where you put midseason shows you know you're going to cancel anyway. Not airing the second episode until after the third shows their disrespect. It probably only got on the air due to a contractual obligation to air it.

CBS isn't a channel for even slightly sci-fi programming anyway. Is Early Edition the closest they've ever got to the genre and kept for more than a season?

Posted by: swizzlest

Yeah, this show was pretty awful. No tears from me.

Posted by: devdogaz

I have two episodes that I haven't watched yet. I guess I won't make it a priority now.

I found the concept interesting. Wasn't all that thrilled with the execution of it. No big loss IMO.

I loved the show. Truly, I don't understand the dissing it gets. (Although I think the reviewer on IMDb has it right -- TV viewers seem to have a narrow view of SF.) Some of the stories were really moving and compelling.

There are a few things I would've changed -- for example, they needed to lose a few cases, for balance; and I could do without dramatic music playing over the closing arguments (only used for "our guys"). Specifically, I thought they should've lost the baseball case, and the retarded guy's case. (He was eccentric, but IMHO, not incompetent.)

The writing was good (if not entirely even); the acting at least adequate. (The young guy, I didn't like, until his closing argument in the premiere.) Better than Enterprise, anyway. With time, it could've been a great show.

Then why use valuable Super Bore, sorry, Super Bowl time to promote it? The first promo/teaser I saw for this show was while 3-clicking to the breaks in The Big Game. I'm a sucker for most anything set in the future, so I was there. I wanted to like this a lot, but liked it a little. As somebody else said, it was bad, but still better than 90% of what else is out there.

I think they also had that show Now and Again something about a guy who got transplanted into another man's body or something like that.. it last for a half a season as well.

Posted by: PVRGuy

I thought it was in bad taste when they had those goofs singing at that guys funeral. I canceled my season pass after that.

During what part of the game?

Sometimes there are spots they just couldn't sell, even during the Super Bowl, so they put in self-promotion. Maybe they were gung-ho about it then and cooled on it later.

Did they even have any more episodes in the can?

And so unrealistic, too. Like, no celebrities ever sing at another celeb's funeral.

;)

But seriously -- once again, they assemble an interesting mix of cast members and then forget they need writers. You'd think it was Enterprise or something.

Pity we couldn't see a show like this with Melinda Snodgrass (who writes SF and has a legal background) as story editor. Wonder who was story editor on the show? IMDB doesn't say.

I don't see how that writing on that show can be considered good in anyway. The whole dialog was basically people trading "witty" one liners. Felt like I was watching a really bad Law & Order and Gilmore Girls unholy hybrid. (Gilmore Girls is another show I can't stand because of the writing).
