Leo's FIRED.

Yep. He might be able to join G4 AFTER the conversion. Taken from his blog quote:
After nearly ten years, well over 2000 live TV shows, lots of laughs, a few tears, and many many wonderful people, my time at TechTV has come to an end.
I could tell so many stories about the talented, committed, hard working, and hard partying people I've worked with there. Each and every one of them will always have a special place in my life . It was with great sadness that I walked out the studio door for the last time last night.
The reasons for my leaving are complicated. As I posted here a few weeks ago, Greg Brannan, Peter Hammersly, and I had come to a happy agreement about a new work schedule and salary, but at the last minute TechTV's outgoing owner, Vulcan Ventures, insisted that I sign away all claims to shares in the company they had given me some years ago. I was unwilling to do so, and they held my job as hostage.
My leaving has nothing to do whatever with G4 or Comcast. In fact, I'm very sorry that I won't be around to participate in the transition. I've already contacted G4 to let them know I'd be glad to continue working at the new channel once they take over and I hope that I'll get that chance.
Fortunately I still have a great job at KFI, a sweet book contract with Que, this thriving web site, and many requests for speeches and other appearances. My family will not starve, and I will be keeping very busy no matter what happens.
Call for Help will continue on the air without me. George Crowe, Dan Mitchell, Fawn Luu, Roger Chang, Cat Schwartz, and Ian the new guy, whose last name I still can't spell, are still there working their tails off to do the best show on TechTV for the least amount of money. Nicole Guilfoyle and Rich Miglozzi are still slaving away to make the web site the best resource ever. Rob D'Arcy, Bill Coen, Josh Villegas, Raevon Armand, Deb Croback, Jon Martin, Greg Tremelling, Brett, Fatty Matty, Jim Smith and the best studio crew in the world are still there keeping things running smoothly. Please keep watching.
For the second time in as many weeks I find myself saying goodbye. My heart was filled with the hundreds of wonderful messages I got last week. It's so gratifying to know that the work we've done has made such a big difference in so many people's lives. With apologies to Lou Gehrig, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I won't be on TV for a little while. But I do hope to see you all again on the small screen some day. Until then, thanks for an incredible 10 years. I'll miss you.

So?
Leo is one of the few good ones on the channel. COMCAST: You BETTER Hire Leo!
Posted by: canonelan2
I totally agree.... Leo is a class act.
For those interested, the topic started in this thread...
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...threadid=168572
Since he said that Call for Help would continue, and since Kevin now has his hands full with the promotion on Screen Savers, I really hope they figure out how to do the show WITHOUT Roger as the host or co-host. Even being a big fan of Call for Help can't stop me from cringing and speeding through most of the show when he's the host (or co-host) since they don't really trust him to do it Leo/Cat style like they trust Kevin to.
Posted by: tomo_kun
The kid's name is Ian who is replaceing him.
COMCAST: YOU MUST HIRE LEO!
Posted by: canonelan2
You could be right but that's not how I read it. I think Ian is the "new guy" they've been talking about for a month or two. New to the crew, not for a host. Did you confirm this somewhere else?
Posted by: tomo_kun
No, i did not.
Posted by: faerie
damn. i love Leo. He's so great. Comcast better get him back!!!
Posted by: farleyruskz
Wow. :(

Bummer.. my Call for Help SP will be cancelled awaiting Leo's return. :(
On the upside, he's on the radio here locally on Sat & Sun. For others, catch a stream here: http://www.kfi640.com/interactive/streaming.html

I'm very sorry to see Leo go. I thought they had inked the deal from the earlier post he made. I wouldn't have said anything until the contract was signed.

Presuming that this is in fact how it happened, pause for a moment to consider the balls on those guys...
They just got through selling their investment in the network for a rather tidy profit. However, the person who is arguably the single dominant force for the whole network, who came on board during the "Let's put on a show!" days, and who apparently accepted stock in lieu of higher pay -- these guys are now insisting that he forfeit his tidy profit? Telling the man that, in many ways, put them in position to get out on top, in order to keep his job he had to sign away what he had rightfully earned? I always knew that the people behind TechTV (in recent years) had taken a few too many hits with the stupid stick, but geez...

If Leo's description of what happened is accurate, I must agree with your assessment. Perhaps the buyout by Comcast might turn out to be a good thing after all. At least I would hope that they are nowhere near as idiotic as this incident makes Vulcan Ventures appear to be.
Posted by: Lakertime
Leo has always been my favorite personality on TechTV and I'll follow him to wherever he goes. I was so satisfied with how the programming schedule of TechTV was done with me watching a few shows on it daily and this past month I feel like I've had the rug pulled from underneath me. Here's hoping for improvements from the take over and to new opportunities for Leo.
Posted by: FatherTed
When I read the stock comment I wondered if it was a substantial share. All I could think was they Vulcan Ventures was wandering into the realm of stock manipulation. "If you want to keep your job give us all the stock back." After all, he's been with them from the very beginning. I assumed it was a fairly decent incentive to keep him loyal, or at least present.
It just seems like their motives should be questioned when the merger is reviewed. I'd like to know how they feel they have a right to force him to sign off on stock. He owns it.

Well, they have ruined Screen Savers and now Call For Help. Nothing on Tech TV left to watch. Bye, bye Tech TV.
I hope Leo lands on his feet some where else. I'm sure he will. Great talent. Knows more about computers than anyone I've ever seen.

I agree with you 100%. When Leo wasn't on TSS I found myself losing interest in the show rather quickly. The other hosts might be knowledgeable, but they are "lifeless" when it comes to performing in front of a camera. I always found it strange that the biggest complaint on Leo was he was always talking, butting in or acting like a goofball. I always found these antics of his confirmed his true enthusiasm for what he does for a living. You could tell he was really enjoying himself, and it carried over into my TV.
Hope Leo lands on my TV again!

I must echo:

Not really. What makes Leo worhwhile is his ability to be interesting while giving you infiormation. I know more about computers that Leo as do many people in this forum, but most of us would completely suck on TV.
He'll be back in the people at G4 have any brains at all.
Some people hate all his antics but for better or worse the show is VERY entertaining when he is on and much less so when he is not.
Posted by: SammyTerry
I canceled my SP last week when Leo went to part time. His taped segments just didn't work and seemed to ruin any flow the show had. I only tolerate Patrick because of Leo and Kevin isn't interesting enough to overcome Patrick.
I still have 3 thumbs up on The Screensavers so maybe I'll still catch the occasional episode in suggestion land.

Aah yes.. TC's resident negative nancy chimes in...

I find TSS to be OK without Leo (and I agree the taped Leo inserts are flow stoppers) but Call For Help is nasty without Leo. I find that Roger doesn't really seem to like being in front of the camera for an entire show. He's OK when doing a Free File segment but he can't carry the entire show.... and Cat has become annoying (to me) since she got her Mac. She's gone full tilt zealot... oh well. I still enjoy TSS, Anime Unleashed and Unscrewed. At least two of those are on the 'keep list' from G4.

me too. I'll miss my techTV, but unless they get some new hosts who can actually... umm... HOST? I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
Posted by: Swirl_Junkie
This is truely dreadful. I guess with the format of these shows, and the apparent accessibility of the hosts, I feel like we all get know these people on a more personal level than a normal television show.
I feel for Leo, he'll be greatly missed on my TV. Sure, he's a bit annoying at times, but it's hard to be informative and educational and entertaining all at the same time. I think he does a darn fine job considering.
I'll continue to watch for Kevin, and some of Yoshi's mods... but I'm sure the button to the right of pause on my remote will get 3x the use it used to during TSS and CFH
It's a sad day for tech on tv.

Vulcan Ventures obviously doesn't care about keeping Leo, since they are on the way out as owners of the company. With Leo owning stock, and they are now being bought, this is obviously the only smart thing he could have done for himself.
If I was at Comcast, I would be on the phone with those at Vulcan screaming, "Don't light the place on fire as you leave you idiots!!"
Leo was THE main personality on Techtv. It is not the same without him. This is a real shame. I will be looking forward to seeing what the new management does.
By the way, maybe G4 programming won't have the same damn "video game champions" videos shown 400,000 times over 2 years now. How many times can I listen to some idiot who supposedly is the "Trucker" champion, or the guy from Germany who is supposedly the greatest at SSX?!

On the Patrick subject, I was catching up today on TSS episodes and on Thurs (4/1) episode he commented when doing the robot segment, "And people wondered why it took so long for me to get married."
The last explanation I had seen here about the ring on his finger was a statement someone quoted where he said it was an engagement ring.
I'm assuming he's now married. It must have happened on one of those periods where he was gone for a week.

Patrick has given bad advice too many times. I think we'd be better off if Patrick, Yoshi and that guy from the lab (sorry, forgot his name) ran a hardware related show.
Leo was in his prime doing interviews. I loved that part of the show and have already missed it.
For the actual Screen Savers stuff, my favorite hosts were The Dark Tipper and Wesley Crusher. :)
I could do with out the Foo/Sarah "tips" part of the show altogether--nothing against them as people, I just don't care for the segment.

Why do they call that guy "Foo" anyway?

FUBAR is a military term "F'd Up Beyond All Recognition"
Foo and Bar were adopted by programmers as variables.
Foo could mean that he's an easily replaced variable because he's an intern.
Or it could mean that he's F'd Up.
Or it could be something else entirely unrelated. :)

I'll miss Leo on TTV. I've been watching since day one, and he truly was a cornerstone of the network. I typically just tuned in to TSS to see what kind of crazy thing he would do or crazy statement he would make. CFH is just too basic for me. I did however, have a SP set up for it because I like watching Tuesday's Mac tip, and Wednesday's Photoshop/Photoshop Elements segments. Otherwise I just FF through the episodes.
I also like to listen to his KFH archives over at http://www.leovilletownsquare.com/archives
While he's stated that he wants to keep his radio show local, I could easily see it being syndicated. He truly has a great radio voice/personality.

And then the grammar afficionado in me thought, "Leo's fired what? Pottery? If so, what of it?" :)
Posted by: faerie
I tried to watch one of last week's TSS and gave up. I was more than happy to delete 5 hours worth of TV from my TiVo to make room for other stuff. Perhaps it was that it was Robot Week and that doesn't interest me in the least; so I suppose I'll give it another try this week. If it's still as bad, my SP's getting deleted.
Posted by: Fofer
If I had known what was in store for TSS, I would have stockpiled 30 or so shows to keep me happy for awhile. The show just isn't the same anymore, it feels like the interns have taken over while the "adults" are away.
Posted by: eric_mcgovern
I am sure Leo will be back on TV in some form, he is just too good at what he does to just stay away.
If was anyone else (on a show) at TechTV I would start putting out for a new job. None of the people left there can make anywhere BUT techtv.
Posted by: arc6th
Leo will find a spot on the tube somewhere, but I will be very surprised if it's at G4. There is no way TTV fired their top on-air personality without permission from Comcast.

I recorded yesterdays Screen Savers out of curiosity to see if they mentioned Leo. They already have a new show opening without him. Pat and Kevin talked about the new opening and how it no longer shows people who are no longer with the show.
Yesterdays Call for Help was a ~month old rerun with Leo.
Posted by: barrettd
Peter000-
I seem to recall reading on Leo's boards that Patrick wasn't involved in the stock option deal so many moons ago. It was only for the people at the top, which included Leo. I think it's in the Leo part of Leoville Boards.
BD
EDIT: Actually, it was in the chat room after his KFI radio show. Radio show logs Check out the third hour's chat log, around 3pm once the show was over.

The new opening had been in the works for some time, since the original plan was for Leo to focus exclusively on Call For Help, only appearing on TSS in pre-taped segments.
Posted by: rtype
I have to admit... those pre-taped segments sucked. Nothing against Leo, but they disrupted the flow of the show and seemed out of place. But then, I feel that way every time Sarah gives a petite windows tip too.

Anyone catch the first new episode of Call for Help since Leo's departure?
The same "Leo & Cat intro" was used and Macworld's Chris Breen hosted both shows. I like Chris Breen, he's no Leo, but at least they realized that putting Roger at the helm is a HUGE MISTAKE!
At the beginning he said... "I'm Chris Breen filling in for Leo Laporte."
Is that a clue? Is he only "filling in" for Leo. That says temporary to me. Maybe just wishful thinking.
Posted by: Fofer
It *was* sort of ironic seeing Tuesday's repeat with Leo apologizing for traveling so much, saying that "he's back for good now," and that "he'll be here, unless he drops dead or something..."
In any case, I hope this is all boardroom dramatics and that when the dust settles, Leo will be back on G4/TechTV/whatever-they're-gonna-call-it.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I have to believe that G4 will hire Leo once the whole merger is complete. After all, Leo is pretty much the crown jewel of TechTV. He is about the only on air personality who has been there from the beginning and he does more to promote the brand than any of the other on air talent. I imagine they'll work out some sort of sweetheart deal and lure him back. If they give him enough money he can get others to ghost all the books he is obligated to do. Megan already did most of the hard work on his most recent book after all.

Chris Pirillo (sp?) was actually "let go." He apparently wasn't happy about it at all. I don't think the reasons ever came to public light though.

VV? Never mind. Brain cramp. What does Vulcan Ventures have to with this now. They sold the company. If Comcast/G4 want Leo back, he will be back and he should be back. I think they are not saying anything until they finish negotiating the terms with Leo.

Leo was ok, but they never really listened to callers questions. I always cringe when they offer a solution to a caller. Poor guys went from screwed up pc to f***ed up pc. I think, if they want, they could do a lot better in replacing Leo. And that girl on screen savers, her voice is like nails on a chalk board. One of those voices from a wendys drive thru.

Your comments make me wonder if you've watched in recent months. The quality of information they've given callers has definitely improved over time. This became noticable to me because the bad info. was so infrequent that it stood out and really irritated me. Most of their bad info recently has been related to stuff with very narrow niche (ripping/cleaning up video, RAID arrays, high quality soundcards, etc.). Their generic info. has had a much better hit rate--except of course for the fact that Patrick has trouble listening and will sometimes answer a completely different question than what the caller is asking. If Kevin has a flaw it is not interupting or correcting Patrick when he's doing this.

That's great news! I just wish he would come back to The Screen Savers. I watched the last couple of nights for the first time since he left and it really isn't the same. There are all these awkward pauses. It looks like a bunch of amateurs just decided to put on a show.
