Oy...I am going to have to listen to a lot of Elton John to scrub the memory of some of those performances from my brain!
We voted for George, La Toya, Jennifer, and Jasmine. The rest were just...so....bad...
Posted by: LoadStar
Unfortunately (or fortunately) I missed Fantasia... so...
Jon Peter Lewis: There were a few notes here and there that you could hear had tone and and clarity... but the rest... oh, so bland at the best, and off-key at the worst. Simon was right, he definitely needs voice lessons. (Sang "Rocketman.")
Jasmine: I thought she was excellent except for "me" in "... is like the sun going down on me" - the note was a REAL clunker. Ouch. Simon said "Not good enough," but honestly, compared to a lot of the rest, if that wasn't good enough, I'm not sure what is. (Sang "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me.")
John Stevens: Hrm. Now I know what "crooner rock" would be, and it's not good. I didn't think it was as bad as the judges did, but it's not an Idol performance. (Sang "Crocodile Rock.")
Camille: She may say she's confident - but she has so many tells that show she has performance anxiety... gripping the mike so tightly it might snap in two, rocking back and forth, and her voice is OH SO shakey, and just not nearly strong enough of a voice. (Sang "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.")
George Huff: Uhm. OK. Elton basically indicated the audience would have no frame of reference, and he was right. I had no idea what to think about that song, which might be a good thing or a bad thing. One comment I had though - it's amazing how he's shifted from looking 40 in the first weeks, to seemingly 10 now with his child-like grin and stuff. Is it possible to find something between? (Sang "Take Me To the Pilot.")
Diana: What the heck was she wearing? That was the WEIRDEST top I've seen. Anyway, her performance. The constant "Come on!" and "Sing it!" are getting really annoying week after week - they worked in her first performances, they're working less and less as the weeks go on. About the only note that I liked was the very last note... the rest sounded off, almost like "power without control." She's got a loud voice, I'm beginning to think that it's not all that GOOD of a voice... there might be a good voice, but she's not controlling it right. Simon's "Nothing to say" was really weird though. (Sang "I'm Still Standing.")
LaToya: I honestly didn't think it was the right song for her, really. She's got a good voice though. I liked Elton's reaction "There are a lot of idiots out there." (Sang "Someone saved my life tonight.")
Jennifer: Very overembellished... reminded me a lot of a good Gospel performance, but I didn't think it was a good pop performance. There was something good in there under the trills. (Sang "Circle of Life.")
Excepting the clunker notes, the only one I really liked was Jasmine. The rest ranged middle of the road to pretty bad.

Expanding...and revising who I voted for (because when I posted the initial post, I'd dialed for 4 of them but the lines were busy, and I had to go back and redial later)
Fantasia: Nasaly again. It was "aight" for me other than that. I don't love her because of the nasal tone and her whole attitude, but she's not a terrible singer. Did not vote for her.
Jon Peter Lewis: He's..."aight", I suppose. He DOES need voice lessons, as Simon said. Tonight he was actually mostly ok, except when he went for the low notes. Usually for guys, it's when they go for the high ones, but he has this whole other weird forced tone when he tries to go low. Did not vote for him.
Jasmine: I really like her, but agree with Paula that she kinda oversang the song. She sang for power the entire song, and it was good (except those two really bad notes she hit on the "me"), but she should have mixed it up a little. I really like her overall though. Voted for her.
John Stevens: As Elton said, it could either be really good or really bad, and man was it ever really bad. I gotta give him props for trying something different, and it was actually a whole lot better than last week's horrifying rendition of "My Girl", which isn't saying much. It was like watching a really bad student in the high school show choir perform in a variety show. Did not vote for him.
Camille: She is physically painful for me to both watch and listen to. Her voice shakes, her face looks like she has terrible constipation, she's constantly hunching forward, and her "movements" consist of flailing one arm around to the side. Did not vote for her.
George: I, like Simon, was not a George Huff fan in the beginning. His voice has this really buzzy quality which I found annoying, the mustache made him look silly, and he just wasn't really very good in his earlier auditions. He has however started to grow on me. He is this year's Clay, I think (maybe not vocally, but I mean more in the sense of "guy that Simon ragged on and didn't like at first who he now seems to love"). I liked his song choice, although I'd never heard it before. He made it sound very gospel-y, and since I'd never heard it, I don't know if it was supposed to sound like that or not. Voted for him.
Diana: I really really liked her in the beginning rounds and the first week of the final 12. But she has gotten super annoying, with the prancing around in the audience and as LodeStar said, all the cutesy "Come on!" and "Let me hear you!" comments. It's like watching a better singer from John Stevens' high school show choir perform in the same variety show. Or maybe a Disney performer or something. She is verging on being just as fake as Kimberly Caldwell. Terrible hair and outfit too. Did not vote for her.
La Toya: I didn't really like her song, although she sang it well. I don't know about her. She is always really good (well, with the exception of Country night, that was pretty bleh), but I am never really that enthused about her performances after she's done. Did not vote for her.
Jennifer: She sang well, but she's always very loud and singing for power, and it is kind of tiring. She looks a whole lot better without the mop hair and the weird eyeliner coming out to a point from the corners of her eyes, though. She would be really good if she would just stop singing so darn loud all the time. Did not vote for her.

There is not really much to say. No one was downright awful, but most of the perfomances weren't great either.
Fantasia: Did a good job, I don't like her voice and I really didn't like her singing that song, but technically, it was good. At least for once, I didn't have to complain about her "oversinging" the song.
JPL: I liked his performance, but it was his worst and it was probably the worst of the evening. He'll be back, though.
Jasmine: I thought she did great. All of the Judges felt differently, though, so either the studio is very, very different than TV or JPL was such a letdown that it carried over to Jasmine.
John Stevens: When I first heard this song, I thought it was nice rendition of the song. It did not have quite the energy of Elton John, but it was so much better than last week. It also helped show his personality which hasn't been able to get out.
Camile: Contrary to Randy (and Simon), this was not her worst performance. In fact, as the song progressed, Camile improved. Nerves have been holding her back, and may continue to do so, but I believe that Camile has grown with each and every performance. I do not, however, believe that she will win the competition.
George: Definitely one of the best two performances of the night. And since I actually felt like it was Elton John singing for a brief moment, I'll give him the nod.
Diana: Her performance is what performers do. I thought that she actually showed the best range of the group and had good control. Some parts of the performance were a little rocky but I think she covered it well. If all there is to complain about is her "cutesy" demeanor, then she is doing well.
LaToya: This was a good performance, but it did not rock my world.
Jennifer: She was good tonight. Easily, her best performance and, IMO, one of the best two tonight.
My picks (in order):
George, Jennifer, Diana, Latoya, Jasmine, Fantasia, Camile, John Stevens, JPL
My prediction on who goes:
Diana
Posted by: Turtleboy
Brott,
I would say that you are out of your mind to pick Diana to go.
However, if you told me last week that Amy Adams was going to go, I would have said the same thing. :)
You really can't tell who is going to go. I think the two remaining white boys have all of the white, suburban 11-12 year old girls voting for them (unlike that big, "not cute" football player guy), so as much as the Jon and John deserve the boot, they're still here.
I would pick Camile to go, but she seems to have a fan club too.
Posted by: NJChris
I thought LaToya's was the best. She has GREAT control of her voice and is a class act all the way.
George - um... he's getting boring. Everything sounds like gospel coming out of his mouth and when he does his poopin' move..i mean bounce, it gets REALLY annoying. He can sing, but there's no emotion felt.
I like Camille's singing tonight. She's getting better each time, and the judges seem a bit meaner tonight.
John P - .. very weak. He seemed odd .. like something was wrong.
John S. Singing was weak, but nice to see him try to change it up.
Jennifer...better tonight but she still over does everything. And when she finished and they showed her friends... one girl was standing there, arms crossed with that "HUH?!!" look on her face.
Jasmine - I liked it. I think she is really good, but sometimes when the backing singers are different than her, it makes it sound off.
Fantasia - please go. Go now. Go. Go. Go.
Diana - please go too. I thought it was awful.
That all said, I think that there is something ODD going on behind the scenes this season. All the judges seem annoyed and like there is something going on.
Posted by: dthmj
I'm going out on a limb and saying Jasmine will be in the bottom three, and may just go...
I don't think she has as big a following as some of the others that did terribly. As bad as John S. did, he's safe for this week.
Posted by: barrettd
My favorite of the competition and the night - Latoya
Bottom 3 tomorrow night if I picked them - John Stevens, Fantasia (cannot stand her at all, voice or personality), Diana
Realistic guess at Bottom 3 - John Stevens, Camille, Diana
Going home - John Stevens (finally? I hope so.)

It seems like all of these contestants are auditioning for record deals, and not trying to win the title. And I think John Stevens deserves some votes just for getting up on that stage knowing that he's going to get slammed by the judges.
Posted by: faerie
This was the first night I've ever liked Jennifer. Bravo.
Once again for me it was Fantasia, George and LaToya. They were all great. I seem to be in the minority, but each week, Fantasia grows on me more and more. I think she really could win this.
Camille was TERRIBLE! I could not understand anything she was singing - I only caught 2 lines of the entire song - something about the islands and the yellow brick road.
Diana's good and she performs well, but she just doesn't connect in my opinion. She needs a hit of George's charisma.
I still like Jasmine but did not think her performance was great, she hit a couple notes so sour that my head snapped around to stare at the TV. I think she has enough talent to at least make it to the final 4 and really hope that she does make it that far.
both of the Jo(h)ns need to go. Now. Please.
I just about spit out my soda when Simon made the comment about somewhere in Vegas a TV is being thrown out a window. Too funny!

Am I the only one who thinks that George Huff looks like Gary Coleman when he gives that sidewise grin towards the camera?
Posted by: dbuchthal
I think it's odd to see all the people here who don't like Fantasia and George. The judges' reactions don't at all match with what y'all are seeing, nor do the online polls. I 100% expect them to be the last two standing. Latoya has an outside chance of being in the top two, but I don't see anyone else who could crack that trio.
Contrary to what others said, I think Jennifer was a *ton* better today. She still tries way too hard -- I would have loved to see her do more of the softer part of the Circle of Life, as the clip she performed was all belted out at high volume. Compared to last week, however, she did manage to "tone down the megaphone" and act quite a bit more composed. I give her the "Clay Aiken Improvement Award" for listening to the judges and doing something productive with the feedback. She needs to take it down a few notches more and sing a song that lets her show her dynamic range. It's great that her volume control "goes to 11," but it would be nice to know it runs below 9 as well.
Overall, I'm very disappointed with this group. Elton John composes challenging vocal lines, and this crowd clearly isn't even close to being up to the task. I suspect last year's contestants would have done much, much better. There's not a singer in this group who matches up to the Kelly/Ruben/Clay/K-Lo standard. If they don't get much better talent next year, they're going to suffer for it in the ratings. The judges deprived us of our chance to see Lisa Lueschner (sp?) and "Unchained Melody" Matthew and now we are all paying for it.
My scale:
George
Latoya
Fantasia
Jennifer
Diana
The rest were just too dreadful for words.
Posted by: mask2343
Fantasia: She's just real good. Her personality might hurt her at the end, but she can sing and perform.
JPL: His confindence is SHOT. I've been on his bandwagon from the beginning, but I might have to jump off. He looked like he wasn't having fun.
Jasmine: Good voice...seen it before.
John Stevens: I like the kid, but he is out of his genre now. He will get a record contract and sing his type of songs, but he shouldn't be here anymore.
Camile: Just painful to watch now. She looks like she is in pain. Nice girl, but out of her league now.
George: If I jump off JPL's bandwagon, I'm joining HUFF NATION. He's such a dork, but it works. This guy can sing the pants off of any song.
Diana: One word: CHEESY.
LaToya: Great voice, great performer, Final Four...then she needs to get creative. Same stuff every week (even though excellent) won't win it for her.
Jennifer: Is it just me, or is she REALLY scary when she sings. It's like she's screaming at me. She DID do a lot better job with her eyes though.
Bottom three: Diana, John S., Camile
Gone: Camile
Posted by: bigcb37
My prediction for bottom three: John Stevens, Camille, and Diana (although it should be JPL)
Camille will go...even though it should be John S. Why does America keep him around!?!? I feel bad for him! He knows he sucks and gets killed by the judges every week. Put him out of his misery people!
Posted by: Redleg
I still have a hard time telling Diana, Camille and Jasmine apart. I find nothing about any of their performances worthy of remembering. They don't sing in tune.
JS and JPL will probably keep going for a couple more weeks. It's almost like they want to be voted out and get this over with, but the conspiracy of 12-year-old white girls is keeping them trapped on the show.
My top three are Fantasia, George, and La Toya, who bumped Jennifer out. She could be back though if she keeps showing the improvement she's shown so far; last night was definitely her best.
Posted by: Ingavar
Bye Bye Camille. Worst I've heard yet in the finals.
Posted by: Falconeer999
My "quick" comments:
Fantasia - That nasally sound really gets on my nerves. It's just like a squeaking chalkboard to me.
JPL - He was confident and entertaining to watch at first. Now, his confidence is gone. He looks more like a deer caught in headlights each week. And he cannot move and sing at the same time - his voice goes all over the place when he does.
Jasmine - Was okay. Nothing outstanding, she has a habit of singing almost all of a song very well but missing the same note over and over so it gets to be irritating. If she can hit all of her notes in a song, she'll be great.
John Stevens - Every time he gets on stage I start looking for my gong. He's just horrible. Every single song has 1 note. He has absolutely no range in his songs and looks like Pinnochio (before he became a boy) up there on stage.
Camille - She's getting a little more confident each week, but she too looks like that trapped deer up there. I just don't think she's all that good on top of that. And that one flailing arm gets on my nerve.
George - I actually had never heard that song before, but I thought he sounded pretty good. He just has the presence that makes you smile.
Diana - She was my early favorite, but she's starting to slip in my standings. Every week is the EXACT same thing. She needs a little variety.
LaToya - Best of the night. I think she'll make it pretty far.
Jennifer - Her best performance yet. Ever since she got rid of that horrible hair and started dressing better, her voice seems to of actually gotten better. However, I don't see her going too much further.
My Bottom 3: JS, Camille, JPL (same bottom 3 for the past 3 weeks) with JS going home
Top 3: LaToya, Jennifer, George
What I think America will pick the bottom 3 will be: Camille, Jasmine, Diana
Who will go: Diana
Posted by: WinBear
Jennifer actually surprised me last night. I voted for her, George and LaToya. I missed Fantasia due to TiVo rebooting, but the rest were just dreadful or unimpressive.
Posted by: MarkofT
LaToya isn't doing anything memorable. She is just kinda there. Apathy will get her kicked off the show before too many weeks go by.
I would not be surprised if Jennifer hasn't sung "Circle of Life" in her cruise ship performances. I think she has too much stage performing to unlearn before she will be a decent popsinger so it is a toss up if she will go before LaToya goes.
Diana also has performance skills to unlearn because they just don't fit in with the current pop style. She might have won AI 1 but the current taste has moved on.
How old is Camille? She's just too immature to handle performing in AI.

Last night was the first time I have really liked Fantasia. George did a great job with take me to the pilot. I had forgotten the semi-gospel start to the song. I thought Jasmine was doing really well and then hit the clunker of all clunkers in the middle and she didn't really recover after that. Jennifer found a giant theatrical song that matches her style and voice. Latoya as always sang very, very well.
The rest basically sounded like Karaoke or talent show singers. None of them seemed comfortable with the lyrics, like they were busy trying to remember the song. I really hate the group somgs on Weds nights, as basically, outside of George, the guys are SOOOO far out of tune, it is painful to listen to week after week.
By the way, remember when Jon Stevens' school choir teacher commented that he has perfect pitch? Maybe she is really the English teacher and was just helping out the music department during the interview. What was she hearing? Someone else in the back row?
Posted by: WinBear
I suspect they'll sing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" tonight for the group singalong. It's Elton's big duet from the 70's.

The schedule says that the results show will be 60 minutes long tonight. There had better be a performace from Elton during those 60 minutes.

I heard on the radio this morning that Tamara from a previous season of AI will be performing. I hope I got that name right since this is the first season I have watched from the beginning.
My bottom 3:
JPL - I can sing better than him and I can't even sing. He looks so defeated and I think wants to go home, but the teeny-bopper girls won't let him go.
John S. - Like Simon said about Diana, "I have nothing to say".
Camille - I'm just waiting for her to spontaneously combust on stage.
Although Fantasia is good, I just don't like her voice and her little attitude with Simon. Yeah Fantasia, you know more than him about talent.
George Huff - Everything he sings sounds like Gospel music as someone previously stated. Not a bad singer, but not my favorite.
Posted by: YCantAngieRead
Not that I've liked what she's done so far, but I'll give Diana a little credit because apparently she was quite sick last night and that SUCKS, having to sing when you're sick...that aside...
Fantasia...One Macy Gray is enough already. I keep saying it-she needs to sing outside her sinuses or she's going to annoy the crap out of everyone. SHE needs voice lessons. And the attitude is really starting to grate on my nerves. Just shut up, Fantasia.
Jon Peter Lewis: He needs to be in musical theatre almost more than Scooter Girl did, and I have a feeling SG would have played better in this competition.
Jasmine: Off pitch through most of it.
John Stevens: Sucked, but he'll be around for a while because as William "When Is He Going To Just Go Away" Hung has proven, America is currently fixed on the underdog. That aside, I don't think we've heard the last of him-I don't think he'll make it in this genre but he might very well in others.
Camille: As someone who DOES have terrible, terrible singing performance anxiety, I'll say this-she may be truthful when she says she feels confident-but the voice, for some reason, is the first thing to go onstage, which of course blows your confidence. Can't really explain it-it's a weird phenomenon that astonishes me each time it happens. I'm not nervous speaking on-stage, but singing always catches me off-guard. That aside, she needs a year or two of practice in front of crowds and she could very well be a professional singer of some sort.
George Huff: I hate this guy. I hate his voice. Each week I'm hoping he goes because it just grates on me.
Diana: At this point, performers can't have an off night, but she did. She usually has a decent voice-a little overblown, but decent. Last night she was just trying WAY, way too hard.
Jennifer: The best performance of the night, although she oversang the crap out of the song. And she doesn't seem to know how to "feel" the music-her canned gestures are really irritating.
I missed LaToya in there somewhere: Just blah. If they hadn't hyped her up so much previous to the competition, she'd be more impressive but they made her have to leap huge bars for improving herself and her performances.
In other matters...Randy's getting a little too standard for my taste...his "yo yo you" and "dawg" routine is become cartoonish.
Posted by: mask2343
Well, who DO you like Angie? :)
Posted by: suzyq
My favorites (not neccessarily in order): Latoya, Fantasia George, Jennifer, Jasmine
The rest can all go home.
Posted by: Falconeer999
Just thought I'd add in that Barry Manilow was on Good Morning America this morning and said that American Idol was going to be doing a show using his songs and he would be a guest judge.
He also said that he asked them if he could please have an entire week to work with the kids instead of just the one day and they let him. Evidentally we aren't the only ones who think they need some help.
Posted by: Dafaso
JS, Camille and JPL were the 3 worst last night.
Bottom three tonight will be:
Diana, Camille, and John S.
Camille will go.
Posted by: DLiquid
How can Jasmine hope to be a professional singer if she hits bad notes in every song? Every week it's the same thing. I keep waiting for one of the judges to bust her for it. Every week Randy says she's "pitchy," but he never says, "Dog, you're pitchy every single week."

You're not alone, I agree with you.
My favorite is still LaToya. I think that her and Fantasia are the only ones in this group who are good enough to get a record deal without this show. George is good, but he's goofy as hell. The rest are all pretty bad, in my opinion. When I start thinking that Kimberly Caldwell is a better singer than the majority of the remaining contestants, I know there is something very wrong here.
Posted by: Demandred
Fantasia has a fine voice, for the most part I like to hear her sing. (last night was not her best though)
My problem with her is her attitude. If anyone (Simon specifically) says anything that isn't "Fantasia you are the best ever!" she gets an attitude. We saw it again last night. If she would just take the criticism, say "Thank you I will work on that" and move on I would be willing to vote for her.

I don't find her attitude troublesome in the least bit. Yeah, she's got attitude, but it keeps things interesting. She's not Kimberly from last year...now that girl had some serious attitude. Fantasia just ignores Simon with a quick quip and moves on. It may be to her detriment, but I'm enjoying her so far. Her voice far outweighs her attitude.

I thought both of my faves, Fantasia & Latoya, were a little off last night... though I counter that by saying even on an "off" night they are still far better than over half of who are remaining.
My nod for best performance of the night was George (could not stand him prior to the finals) - he is very good at song selection.
Diana has been dropping down my list the past two weeks -- think she is trying to hard to "connect" with the audience....she is better at slower songs where she can belt out those long notes
Jennifer was back to BOOMING... while there is no doubt she has a great voice it seems like she can't find the right level...too much or not enough.
My bottom 3 (and long overdue!) would be: John S, Camile & JPL with John S going...
But since what I think seems to have little to do with who actually makes it to the bottom 3 ... my gut tells me...Bottom 3: Camile, Diana, Jennifer w/ Diana going

Last night was the first night I didn't vote at all. I just felt like nobody was good enough to spend the time phoning in. I have voted for underdogs like John Stevens and John Peter Lewis in the past because I liked them and was rooting for them to get better. Instead they seem to be getting worse.
I'm also a big Elton John fan and it was harder for them to live up to my expectations of each song. "Take me to the pilot", which they apparently thought would be a song people wouldn't know, used to be one of my favorite songs. I think that might be the song that first introduced me to Elton John.
Sometimes people complain when they can't the lyrics a contestant is singing. I have the opposite complaint with John Peter Lewis. He seems to annunciate every single word so clearly that all the feeling is just drained from the song.
I think the reason I like John Stevens in spite of his poor performances is his uncanny resemblance to Conan O'Brien. I'm surprised Conan hasn't had him on his show.

I'm fairly certain that the AI contestants are under contract with FOX and not allowed to appear on any other network, at least as long as the show is running.
Also, being a big fan of Elton John, I noticed multiple times where the contestants started the song with the first verse but then skipped either to another verse or cut out portions of the verse to more quickly get to the chorus. I understand the need to cut the songs so they keep the show to an hour, but why cut out part of a verse of a well known song and then extend the chorus and bridge? Did anyone else notice this? Did it bother anyone else?

That article has a lot of truth to it. I think this season has become a mockery with the way the votes have gone.
And just to complain some more...
I can't stand when Simon says "I have nothing to say" or "I dont get this music"
First - he's in the industry.. shouldn't he be able to recognize good singing no matter if he likes the song or not? DUH!
Second - nothing to say? Oh, that's a big help. How can the performer take that and make themselves better or know what the heck they should do?
There.. I'm done.

You people have got listen to more Elton..."Take Me To The Pilot" is played on classic rock stations constantly...
George, LaToya and Jasmine (except for "me.....") were the best....
Camile has got to go...someone has got to stop her from singing every song like its a hip-hop tune...stop pointing and motioning.
Fantasia sings like she talks, nasally and annoying...But her attitude is what's going to do her in...someone should remind her she was a nobody until these three boob judges put her on the show...
JPL was ok, JL was better than last week...
Jennifer, good but a bit over the top...
Diana started ok but tailed off...and stop asking everyone to sing, YOU SING!
Camile, JL and Diana bottom three, Camile finally and thankfully goes!

I think the blame for this season's poor crop of finalists has to be placed right on the judges, they are the ones that for some reason put all of these people through and they are suppose to be the experts...with only one or two exceptions they are all very bad...Wedding singers are better than some of these people...It's embarrasing to listen to them.
It is very annoying to listen to Paula be so positive with someone like Camile when it is so obvious that she is terrible! Every week she is terrible!

I don't understand all of the comments about Fantasia's bad attitude. It seems to me that she tries to play off the criticism by making a joke out of it. One week she pretended to be mad at Simon. Last night she said loudly, "I love you Simon!" in response to his criticism. Yeah, she never says, "Okay, I'll work on that," but how does the joking around constitute a bad attitude?
Posted by: DreadPirateRob
Well, as always happens, the competition sorts itself out. Every season (all 3 of them ;) ) the final 12 appears to be the "best ever", but once they have to start performing all by their lonesome in front of a live nationwide audience, they start cutting themselves.
We are down to a 3-person race: George (my favorite at this point), LaToya, and Fantasia. If anyone else makes the final 3, I'd be shocked.
Jennifer is trying to close the gap with that big voice, but she still need to learn how to control it. Jasmine was an early possibility, but she has fallen off recently. Diana becomes more and more irritating by the week. The other 3 are just nauseatingly bad. Anyone who questions the decline in American society only need check out the voting results that keep bringing back JPL and Big Red. Put them out of their misery already!
The judges do deserve a lot of blame, but I can't remember who they brought back as wild cards with their own selections (other than Paula bringing in Leah Labelle - ugh). The only notable singers I thought deserved a chance that didn't were Lisa Leuschner and Erskine Walcott.

It may have just been me, but it seemed like Take Me to the Pilot's tempo was much slower than the record actually is.
I was hoping George would sing Philadelphia Freedom.

My take (just watched the show)
Fantasia – It was okay. I just think she is nasty. Don’t like her. Of course, maybe last week’s results have killed my caring for this show.
JP – Horrible. Was he trying to sing harmony for himself? Man, I would think he was high when he sang and talked.
Jasmine – Pretty decent. Actually pretty good. But she lost the key near the end. That is a bitch of a song to sing and stay in key. I swear the judges only remember the last 10 notes (at least Paula and Randy).
Jon Stevens – Whose voice IS that? I can almost place it. But it is like listening to Pat Boone sing boogy-woogy. At least he was mostly in tune but his voice just doesn’t cut it. Randy is wrong, though. He isn’t better than this.
Camille – Rough, rough start. And rough finish? Is she crying while she is singing? Anyone listening should be. As should Sir Elton and Sir Rupert. Is Fox stacking this with bad so we watch the train wrecks? (Maybe they will bring back Hung?)
George – Not exactly Elton’s version but a very nice rendition. Soulful. Felt like I was on an old river. I liked it a lot.
Diana – “Feeling like a little kid.” That summed it up for me. That is what it sounded like. Dress up for the kid singing along with Elton on the radio. I think she basically sang one note for 90% of the song.
LaToya – This is a voice. As Paula likes to say “she made the song her own.” She continues to impress me. Always in the top three and usually the best of the night. Kick off JP, Jasmine, Jon Stevens, Camille, Diana and let LaToya, Fantasia, George and Jennifer fight it out for two months.
Jennifer – Perfect. This is the perfect song for her. Elton picked her to sing it and he knows what he is doing.
My rankings:
1. Jennifer
2. LaToya
3. George
4. Fantasia
5. Jasmine
6. Diana
7. Camille
8. Jon Stevens
9. JP
And for those of you who can't see it, Fantasia is already a diva (in the worse sense of the word). She isn't being funny, she is throwing hissy fits then trying to make it sound like she is being funny later.
(Oh, and if Turtle Boy is reading this, I put the black performers above the white/pacific rim ones again. Think it wasn't Motown but the actual abilities of the singers themselves.)

You know, with my back turned to the TV, JPL and JS sound EXACTLY the same in a lot of ways. I also love how it takes AI a freakin' hour to do something that it takes about three seconds to do on Nashville Star or any other non-annoying show.
quote:
He also said that he asked them if he could please have an entire week to work with the kids instead of just the one day and they let him. Evidentally we aren't the only ones who think they need some help.
Actually, I'm not a Barry Manilow fan, but this impresses me. Elton's appearance, while I like him, was sort of lame yesterday-didn't even show up for an hour-long show (yes, I know he has a show to do, so I guess that's okay but still...) I like that he wants to spend some actual time with the kids...I can only imagine that'd be something he'd have to cancel appearances for and such.

Ok, what have I missed?
What is this group A, group B, etc stuff?
and Diana, PLEASE GO.
Posted by: YCantAngieRead
I have NO idea. I was just going to ask what the crap they were doing tonight with the three groups...and why are people screaming when they assign people to various groups-we have no idea why they're doing that.
Posted by: LoadStar
Ok, I'm no fan of Fantasia - but to group her in with John and Jon - oh, that's just sad. That is sad and pathetic in so many ways.
Posted by: LoadStar
Oh, thank goodness. Camille is GONE.
Still... to the American public: John and Jon CAN'T SING! STOP VOTING FOR THEM!

Did they ever say which of the 2 "safe" groups was the top vote-getting group?

THey didn't but I think from the groupings it was pretty obvious who it was. :)

I don't think Camille was worse than either John or Jon.. and when Jasmine sang tonight.. I think she maybe hit 2 notes.
Ok.. when Tamarya(sp?) sang tonight... wow... I tell ya.. nobody can compete with her from this group.
Posted by: TonyD79
Some of you seriously need to tune up your home theaters (or buy a bigger speaker).
Angie, JS and JLP sound alike????
And NJChris, Jasmine hit maybe 2 notes? That was almost flawless tonight. Camille is really, really, really bad.
I took from the three groups that Fantasia, despite the polls and the hype finished anywhere from 4th to 6th. Even though I don't like her, I can't imagine 6th or 5th (below J and JP).
Faith may be restored in America here.

I agree Chris. And I didn't think she was all that bad last night compared to everyone else.

Well, it is possible it's a speaker issue since the TV here in the living room/computer room is at LEAST 25 years old. :D But there's something very similar in the timbre of their voices.
Posted by: TonyD79
Do either of you know the notes to that song? She hit them tonight. She was better tonight than last and she was pretty good last night.
But it doesn't matter. The first of the awful is gone. Now to dump JP and JS.

I'm finally glad that Camille got the boot. It has been long in coming. Should have happened about 3 weeks ago.
Time to judge the judges:
Randy - Pretty much the same as usual. I agreed with him the most this week.
Paula - She was pretty much useless this week. Seems like everything she said was a repeat of what Randy said.
Simon - I don't know what everyone else thinks, but, I think that he's getting pretty disgusted at the lack of talent this season (with a few exceptions of course). He was basically repeating himself a lot.
In regard to the farewell comments for Camille, what happened to Simon's comments? Are the producer's getting a little sensitive?

Well, she didn't go, and I'm glad. She didn't deserve to be in the bottom three, but as I expected, she was there.
Unfortunately, I bet JPL was #4. I like JPL, but he sucked bad last night. No way would I have voted for him if I actually voted .. The other weeks, I would've (and did one time). Glad to see George in the top 3.
I still think that Camile has gotten better with every performance that she has given. Tonight was a lot better than last night. She just didn't improve enough to stay above water. JPL should have gone tonight and he should thank Camile for losing (although it's not her fault).
Posted by: TonyD79
Why don't they do something like this every week? I know they can't put them in equal groups but they could just walk down the voting until they are down to three then go to a "break."
(Geez, does it seem that Seacrest says "after the break" as often as a pro athlete says "like" or "um" in an interview?)
Posted by: Todd
Why didn't they tell us which group got the highest number of votes?
Camille deserved to go, but so did the 2 Jo(h)ns as well as Fantasia. I just can't take Fantasia anymore, that voice and attitude are a bit much...
I also thought Jasmine was much better than the judges thought.
Posted by: BLeonard
I guess Camille expected to be the one to go as she changed the lyrics to her song to express her love for the other contestants and mentioned hawaii and her goodbyes.
Posted by: BLeonard
I assumed the first group they announced as safe was the highest scoring group.
Posted by: GoodN
Anybody think that the B group (JPL, Fantasia, John) was the top 3? The boys have a huge following, and Fantasia has the personality to go along with her talent. I just don't see the Tamyra Group (Jennifer, George, LT) pulling enough votes to be in the top 3. I just see them canceling each other out.
Posted by: faerie
Jasmine sounded a lot better tonight than she did last night. Camille's gone. Now to get the Jo(h)ns gone. Then I'll be happy.
Posted by: ced6
I find it funny that everyone is commenting on Fantasia's attitude. I'm pretty sure that I remember, one week when she didn't give any attitude, the judges commented on that and said they missed her sassiness or some other such word. Maybe I misunderstood, but I think they are encouraging her.
Diana - she really should have been on that Disney show that Britney and Justin and Christina used to be on (I forgot the name) and then we wouldn't have to be sitting through her kiddie shows this time around.
And I think I'm the only one, but Jennifer and George have been my favorites since the beginning (I was so sad when they originally kicked George off!). I only wish that Erskine and Leuschner had been asked back. La Toya's good, but it doesn't move me. JPL is interesting - I definitely think that with extensive voice lessons, he might be good.

I also thought it was odd that Simon didn't get to say anything to Camille...
Sadly, at the beginning she really was my favorite and I like her voice, she just doesn't have the vocal strength. I hope she gets some serious training, because my problem with many of these (Diana the most who I absolutey can't stand) are they are ordinary. Good singers, but nothing any different then what you already hear. Camille has a great sound, she just isn't good enough vocal wise, she needs a bigger voice.
Posted by: Turtleboy
Simon would have probably told Camille to find another profession, so they preferred that he wouldn't say anything.
I liked how they got back from break and Paula wasn't able to make it back from the bathroom (where she was probably either snorting coke or purging (or both)).
I didn't like how Camille changed the words to the song to sing about going back to Hawaii -- very cheesy. And before watching the segment on the Kid's Choice awards, I didn't realize that she was trying to portray a gangsta image.

4 words: "you don't know class." Personally, I don't think she's making jokes of the criticism, I think she means it. She only likes to hear positive criticism, and likes to be the focus. I don't believe she's joking, I think she discounts everything Simon says to her unless it's positive.
Which, as Tamyra said last evening, isn't entirely bad. BUT, Tamyra also said that you should take the critism and try to find what you can use to do better. I don't believe Fantasia does this.
Don't get me wrong, I think she's a great singer, and think she has a very good chance of winning. But I think she thinks she's already got it sewn up. She's acting like she's already won, and I don't think that's the right attitude to have.

Well, I watched it live (yes, have sympathy for me) since TiVo was recording another show, and they didn't bleep out the plug at all here. All she said was "Yes, I have a new single coming out, 'Rain On Me,' and you can buy it at Sommemusic.com, that's s-o-m-m-e-music.com."
Posted by: Redleg
I was glad to see those three in the bottom; although they are out of their depth in this competition, at least JPL and JS have some personality. And Jasmine absolutely missed most of the notes Tuesday night; she gets close, but this isn't hand grenades. When they say "pitchy," that performance is exactly what they are talking about -- she doesn't miss the note altogether, but she hits them all on the "flat" side (a fraction of a tone too low). With her talent, it is something that could probably be fixed with voice lessons, but it's hard to listen to now.
No bleeping of the plug on our TiVo, we heard it all.

Hmn. I thought it was a tivo/network glitch that the sound dropped out. pretty darn funny!

Apparently, the website she was plugging wasn't the show's, but her own personal website, so they bleeped that out.
Posted by: Dafaso
Julia wasn't bleeped out when I watched.
I thought Jasmine sang better last night than on Tuesday. But in general, she's getting worse each week, as is Diana, while George is getting better each week.
I think Fantasia does have a bad attitude. When Tamyra was telling her to take criticism and work with it to improve, Fantasia didn't look too happy. But as soon as Tamyra said something like "remember this is only one person's opinion.." Fantasia cracked a big smile and looked at Simon. Her attitude will be her downfall - but she'll get a recording deal anyway.
I love Jennifer (more than most), but she did seem a little too giddy when she saw she was in the same group as George and LaToya.

I assume that is what they did. Funny how they tape delay a show filmed on the west coast, for the west coast...hmmm...
Really stinks for the finals...since it is usually everywhere as soon as it is announced..
Posted by: TonyD79
Maybe, just maybe, the shock of being lumped with JS and JP will make Fantasia rethink her 'tude.
Doubt it, but one can only hope.
Posted by: Falconeer999
I live out on the east coast and it wasn't bleeped out.
I to this day think that Tamyra got screwed over. I think she is better than anyone from seasons 1, 2 and 3. If I had to judge all 3 seaons, #1 would be Tamyra, #2 would be Kimberly Locke.
Anyway, back to this season - I think that Jasmine was almost right on. I listened hard at the spots she missed the previous night and she hit all of them.
I'm glad that Camille is gone. My wife and I are wondering if she has developed ulcers yet. I think for her own sake it is good that she's gone.
When they said they were breaking it down into 3 groups, my wife and I paused it and we tried to guess the groups - I got 100% :) I was wrong on who would go though (picked Diana - thought maybe Camille would have the sympathy vote) - I missed out on the "powerball". I hope they split them into groups every week so we can get some idea of how the votes came out.
I really don't see the attitude everyone says that Fantasia has - she just brushes off Simon's comments with a quick reply. To me, that's not a major attitude. Attitude was that girl who didn't make the group of 32 and was in the elevator with her dad I think - that was attitude. Fantasia just brushes off bad comments with sarcasm. Not a major fault. Her fault is that voice. Man, is it irritating.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the "best" American Idol. For me, it's still Kelly Clarkson. She was my pick from her very first performance, and I still think she's better than anyone who's performed since, including Tamyra. Listen to their duet on Kelly's album. Tamyra's voice just doesn't seem as strong as Kelly.
Personal opinion, though...to each their own!
I will agree that Fantasia's voice is irritating. I really hope she's gone soon. If John Stevens doesn't leave next week, I'm going to start calling and voting for him. If he won AI, the show would come to an abrupt halt and never take the airwaves again. Serves Simon right for being so high on him in the beginning...
Maybe it's because this season we've seen so much more of the contestants' auditions, but we were able to clearly see some very, very poor decisions made by the judges that contributed to the lack of talent we're left with in the finals.

Last night Tamyra showed control of her voice that no one, since the inception of this show, has demonstrated. I think she is playing it very smart, knows she has the talent and is taking it slow. She will be around for a while.
With Clarkson, it is either love or hate. I can't stand her, too me it just sounds like she is screaming, and has zero control over her vocal cords. Granted she is screaming in tune, but it is none the less still screaming.
Funny you mention the duets, since whenever I have heard the both of them sing, I can only pick up on Tamyra's voice. It sounds like she is restraining herself so that Clarkson isn't drowned out.
Did you see how far she held the mic from her mouth last night? She can belt it out.

I think there is enough evidence to support that thought GoodN
Fantasia is a very polarizing figure...and her fan base knows it and is rallying behind her...and despite perpetually shaky performances, JPL and John have never been bottom 3 (unlike the other groups Jennifer & LaToya)...and JPL was the "audience" wildcard pick. So I think this probably means a lot more weeks for John & Jon...ugh!
Brilliant idea to do the groupings... with Camile's exit stirring little buzz.. there is certainly a lot of talk about who is in the top & middle groups!

I wish they would reveal after each season how the weekly voting went. Interesting to see if winners went wire-to-wire or see how contestants lost steam along the way.

I agree with TonyD79. Jasmine is great. We (my wife and I) listen to AI through our stereo system turned up loud. Jasmine put "goose bumps" on my arms when she sang tonight. Only one who does. She's a beautiful person, inside and out. She's my wife and I's "American Idol". We were upset she was even in the lower group. Yes, we both heard the two flat notes on Tuesday night. The rest of the performance was great. She had been sick--probably had something to do with it.
Poor John Stevens! The 12-14 year old voters won't let him quit!
So, if it's not sunk in yet, it's a popularity contest, not a singing contest. IMHO

Confession time -- I just went to see Kelly and Clay perform a joint concert in Seattle this week. I've been huge fans of both performers since watching the last two seasons, so I've been excited about the concert coming up.
Clay blew me away with his performance. The highlight of the night was watching him sing "When Doves Cry" by Prince, especially the first stanza, which he sang a capella. Just as impressive for me was his natural presence on stage and ease at conversing with the audience. He performed like he had been working in Vegas for the last 10 years.
Kelly was very up-and-down. She can sure as hell belt it out, and "Miss Independence" continues to be her best song. The deciding point for me, where I went from huge fan to mostly indifferent, was her new rendition of Beautiful Disaster. She started out by explaining that the album version was overproduced, and she really wanted it to be a little more mellow. They dimmed the lights and started the song with just her sitting on a piano. The piano started playing softly and then she JUST BEGAN WAILING AT THE TOP OF HER LUNGS INTO THE MICROPHONE, which was so out of context that it was painfully jarring. I had been dying to hear her tone it down and give an earnest performance, but at this point she seems to have regressed into being a clone of Jennifer Hudson. Ugh. I mean, I think Jennifer Hudson is nice and all, but she doesn't deserve to win this thing.
It would be funny if the last two champions (Kelly and Ruben) ended up being less popular than some of the runners-up (Tamyra and Clay.) Simon is right that we get what we deserve when we let the public vote.
Does anyone know how the various Idols are doing with their albums? I know Kelly and Ruben hit platinum, and I think Kelly got to double-platinum. Clay recently made triple-platinum. Justin's CDs are filling some landfill in southern California. Is there a web site where we can look this stuff up?

U.S. sales figures as of 4-22-2004:
Clay Aiken - 2,492,030
Kelly Clarkson - 1,961,542
Ruben Studdard - 1,631,884
William Hung - 37,745 (first week of release)
I don't have Justin Guarini's sales figures but I read he sold under 100,000 copies and was dropped from his label. William Hung might outsell Justin!
