Is it possible to reformat a TIVO drive without a desktop PC? All i have is a laptop, so i cannot insert the drive. Would putting it in an external USB enclosure work? I tried this once, but was unable to make extreme recognize the drive.

Many people have asked this question (try a search to find them), but nobody that I've seen has ever successfully done it with a laptop. The tools are simply geared for dealing with IDE drives connected to a desktop PC. Can you borrow a PC from a friend? You can assure them that their data is safe because you can disconnect their hard drive(s) while you use the Linux tools to upgrade your Tivo drive.
