Tivo Upgrade Question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,
I have a tivo back up. When I backed it up I had a Fat32 drive. I do not have that drive anymore. Is it possible to take that backup and put it on a new tivo drive from an xp drive? I know you can't make backups to a xp drive.
Thanks,
David

Sure - you can read from NTFS drives, just not write to them.

Anywhere, in root oe a temp folder, anything you can easily access from a command line.

Well I am having trouble restoring the file. It says it is not found. When I am in the command line I
mount /dev/hda1 /

Than when i want to make the copy I
mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpi /tivo.bak /dev/hdab

Than it says the file is not found.
I must be doing something wrong.
Thanks,
David

You need to mount the drive correctly.
You can use a command like:

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/c

if c exists.

or you could make a new directory:

mkdir /mnt/dos

and then mount your drive:

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

Then you need to use the right restore command. On an S2:

mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb

or

mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpi /mnt/c/tivo.bak /dev/hdb

if you used my first example.

I believe you need to remove the -s 127 if your restoring to the original Tivo A: drive.
The /dev/hdb assumes that the drive you want to restore to is connected as the primary slave. The tivo.bak assumes that's what you called your backup.

You'll need to expand the recording capacity after you test the restore if your restoring to a larger drive.

Great!!! I got it to work. Thanks so much for your help. I think I am going to start doing some hacks to the tivo unit.
