Why is the topic Video extraction banned?

When the term video extraction is used, is it refering to the backing up of the recorded shows on your TiVo hard drive to a external hardrive, VCR tape, or a burned CD or DVD? If so I don't understand what the problem is - people can do that stuff now can't they? Standalones via home networking and DTiVos only in real time via signal out ?? Is it only because the encryption/compression on the hard drive is copy writed or is it some other issue.
Personally, I would love the ability to archive my TiVo hardrive to a external hard drive, CD or DVD burner via my DSR704 USB 2.0 port - even if it would ONLY play back on the same Tivo that made the recording - it would just be a way to save on to some shows - the same as people having a VCR tape collection of their faviorite shows.
I'm not asking about hacks here, I just want to understand the issue.

That's not the problem. THe problem is that if people can make perfect digital copies then it raises copyright issues. Hooking up a DVD burner still has Digital-Analog-Digital coversion.
Since TCF wants to be in good standing with TiVo, they banned it so there is no copyright issues because of us.

The hacks required for some forms of video extraction involve circumventing encryption schemes used to protect content stored on the units; this circumvention can be constued, in certain circles, as a violation of the DMCA.
This forum is extremely high-profile, and if TiVo, or more appropriately a content-provider or anyone with rights to the actual content wanted to make a legal case of it, the highest-profile sources tend to be targetted as they serve as an example to others. The TiVo Community Forum does not want to be used as such an example, and even though there are forms of extraction that would not necessarily be construed as violated the DMCA, the entire topic is off-limits. Its just easier that way.
Plenty of other places on the net to discuss extraction however, so no reason to get too bent out of shape about it...
