Well, that happened a lot sooner than I expected. I was just discussing Deadwood with some co-workers the other day and we all expected Wild Bill's death to occur at the end of this season, possibly in the season finale. Guess we were wrong. :(

:(
yep, made me cry.

When Wild Bill was standing at the table just before sitting down, I thought that he paused for a few seconds wondering if he should have his back to the door. Did any one else notice this?

Ah crap!!
I miss the last 5 minutes and Wild Bill dies?? and I missed it??
Crapola!!!

Watch the recording. I'm sure he will die again ;)

Last nights scene was exactly how it really happened. For some reason Wild Bill didn't sit in his usual spot facing the door. One thing they didn't show, maybe they will next week, is that Hickock was holding Aces and Eights, which from that point on became known as "dead man's hand".
It's interesting how they are mixing fact with fiction. In reality Hickock was killed the day after Bullock got to town so they likely never actually met.
I thought last nights episode was a little weak, even with the powerful ending. Great show overall though.

I'm really starting to enjoy this show, even though I've only watched two episodes and am still a little lost.
I hated to see Wild Bill killed off...he was one of my favorite characters.

Spot on. I thought Jane would have a look at his hand after chugging that half a fifth of whiskey.

I am loving this show so far. This ep was a little too slow and not much really happened in the last 30 minutes except for Bill getting shot at the very end. Not the best ep of the bunch so far but still pretty darn good.
What's the deal with that Andy character?? Am I missing something or did this guy just roll into town like some bigshot and then he's suddenly "poorly" with something (smallpox maybe?) I just don't get that part.
And I was hoping for some more spying and counter-spying between the rival saloons. They kinda swept that issue under the carpet for this ep. I hope they bring it back up quick because I am really enjoying the games played between these two establishments.
I was totally shocked with the ending. I knew that Bill would die eventually but I didn't expect it so early in the series. Was a true eye-popping moment for me. I was wondering why they were spending so much time on Jack during the last half of the show. Guess my foreshadowing radar was turned off.

I thought it was an AWESOME episode. Every single minute.
The scene with Wild Bill and Swearengen was fantastic. I watched it twice.
I'm really glad I stuck with this show. The first episode was off to me. The actors didn't seem to be comfortable in their roles yet. Now I look forward to this show more than any other.

I think the show is pretty good. Not great. I was surprised how inaccurate this show is compared to the real history. Bill and Jane were quite an item.

Well even so called history "experts" don't agree on the "real" history of Deadwood and it's characters. That's not uncommon about events that took place so long ago. Some say the language used by Milch is very accurate, some say it's way off.
As far as Bill and Jane, most of what I read agrees with the portrayal on the show, CJ idolized Bill but there was nothing more to it than that. However there are some history sources that suggest that there was more going on between them. CJ's autobiography is said to contain many exaggerated and made up claims.
The bottom line is there is really no way to completely separate fact from fiction with regards to the "old west". Many stories were passed from person to person, generation to generation.
I think there is little doubt that the stories of her posing as a man and joining the Newton-Jenny geological expedition and later serving under General George Crook, until she was found out to be a woman, were probably true :)

So what was the deal with the horseman and the head?
Posted by: iguru42
I was confused by that as well.

I suspect it's looking forward to future developments...
Remember that the Indians were blamed (unjustly) for the deaths of the settler family. It looks like somebody is taking action. I have a feeling the Indians may take exception to this action. And remember, this is still technically Indian land they're living (squatting) on.

I thought that the ending this week was very powerful. I also thought that it would be a while longer before that happened. I enjoyed the whole show though. I didn't really find it slow at all.
I am really enjoying this show. I haven't disliked any of the episodes so far. I'm in for the long haul.

I'm also glad I stuck with this; I now look forward to it every week. It moves a little slow, which when watching late at night makes it hard to stay awake, but it is well done (shades of Carnivale there). I think the characters have come together pretty well.

I think Andy is just a character written to spread smallpox through the town. I don't know the history of Deadwood. Maybe that is why the town disbanded?

This site tells a lot of the history of the town and characters from the show, including Bullock and the hardware store and Swearengen and the Gem Theater.
(There are likely more historical spoilers, so be careful if you want to be surprised during the show!)

After the Metz family was killed, didn't Swearengen offer a bounty for heads of the Sioux?

Along those lines, for those of you that are familiar with the history please give the rest of us a bit of slack by posting such things in spoiler tags. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would greatly appreciate it.
I know zero about the history of Deadwood. Heck, I know very little about history period. I had no idea Deadwood was a real place and that anyone outside of Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, and Charlie Utter were based on actual people. I had no idea Deadwood was where Wild Bill died. It would have been nice to have been surprised.

That seems like a fair request, CB.
Personally reading up a little on Swearengen and Bullock makes me like the show and the characters better, but you wouldn't want the plot spoiled.

Boy was I surprised that Bill got shot....I was thinking tht him and Bullock were going to have a long relationship.

Stunned... Amazing episode. Deadwood rocks!

It took me 3 watchings to get through this weeks episode. Last night I was finally able to finish it without falling asleep. To say the last half hour was a little slow is an understatement. I really liked all the episodes up until this one and have confidence it will pick up again.
