This year's Hugo Award Nominations have been announced.
quote:
Best Dramatic Presentation — Short Form (212 ballots)
* "Chosen" — Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Mutant Enemy Inc./20th Century Fox). Written and directed by Joss Whedon.
* "Gollum's Acceptance Speech at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards" (Wingnut Films/New Line Cinema). Written and directed by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson.
* "Heart of Gold" — Firefly (Mutant Enemy Inc./20th Century Fox). Directed by Thomas J. Wright; written by Brett Matthews.
* "The Message" — Firefly (Mutant Enemy Inc./20th Century Fox). Directed by Tim Minear; written by Joss Whedon & Tim Minear.
* "Rosetta" — Smallville (Tollin/Robbins Productions/Warner Brothers). Directed by James Marshall; written by Al Gough & Miles Millar.
Now I realize that last year's nominations were wacky when they nominated "A Night in Sickbay" but "Gollum's Acceptance Speech at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards"??? WTF???
Nice to see that Firefly made the cut again and Enterprise was shut out (as it should be...)

"Enterprise"?!? Is that STILL ON?
;)
(I'll probably make that stupid joke until it really IS gone!)

Might not take that long. :(

I managed to find that Gollum thing on the internet. I hope they show the unbleeped version at Worldcon. :)
I will vote for Rosetta Stone it was a very good episode of Smallville.

If you've got the extended edition DVD of The Two Towers, you've already got the unbleeped version. ;)
It's an easter egg on the second disc, I believe.

I've had the DVD for how long and didn't realize this???
I guess you really do learn something new every day.

Oh gosh aroonie. :) I will have to look up the Easter Eggs since I do have the Extended (nerd) versions of both of the movies that are out.

Actually, I was mistaken about it being on Disc Two-- it's on Disc One. Here's how to get it, spoilered for those who like to find stuff like this on their own:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Insert disc 1 and choose the 'select a scene' option.
From the list of chapters on the right of the screen, choose scenes 29-30.
Press down on your remote to highlight scene 30 ("Of Herbs And Stewed Rabbit").
Press down once more and a small ring will appear. Press ENTER to play the Gollum clip.

Not only is Enterprise not "Science Fiction", but basically NONE of the Trek franchise is!! Its all action-adventure that happens to take place on spaceships.

Go Firefly! ;)

Does anyone else think it's odd they chose "the message" to nominate?
Not only did it not air, but it's probably my least favorite ep. of firefly (i'd probably have to think twice about the train job, but the message is certainly one of the few eps that did not leave me feeling shiny).

Err, that applies to about half of all sci-fi, and about 75% of TV/Movie SciFi. It's like saying that Gunsmoke is just an adventure that took place on horseback. Trek may not be "hard" science fiction, but it's no less realistic than a lot SF classics (and yes, I am mixing my genre abbreviations just to annoy the purists :D )
Not that I'm defending Enterprise or anything... I'd much rather see Firefly win (an action-adventure on spaceships and horseback! :) )

I'm assuming that they could only nominate the unaired episodes, since the others aired in the previous awards-year? I guess the DVD release counts as a first publication for these two...
BTW, I liked The Message just fine, despite ending on a different note from most episodes.

The message had me tearing up a little.
O.K. so I was using a kleenex.

The Gollum nomination might be odd to somebody who hasn't seen it. Hell, it's odd to me, and I HAVE seen it. But it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and the post-modern irony of an awards show acceptance speech being nominated for an award is just too rich not to enjoy.

The Firefly episode is unaired????!!!!! Oh gawd, how stupid. I guess I either will see it at Worldcon or rent the disk.

It is one of three unaired episodes, "Heart of Gold", "Trash", and "The Message". All three are included in the DVD boxed set.

I have just watched the Firefly DVD set.
What I don't understand is why they would a) nominate two unaired Firefly episodes, and b) nominate one of the middling episodes ("The Message"), and c) nominate easily the worst/weakest Firefly episode ("Heart of Gold"), and d) totally ignore what was by far the best/most interesting Firefly episode ("Objects in Space").
"Objects in Space" sticks in my mind the most of all the episodes, and not just because it was the last episode. It was the one episode that finally brought together all the characters and themes of Firefly and made sense of them all - it was the most philosophic episode explaining something about what the show Firefly was all about.
That's my own opinion of course; but I could easily list other Firefly episodes more deserving of nomination than "The Message" and "Heart of Gold" (for instance, "Out of Gas", "Ariel", "Jaynestown", "War Stories", etc). And I don't think mine is a minority opinion (but what do I know).

It might have something to do with the fact that the DVD-only episodes were the only ones that came out in 2003...

Hmmm. Okay, but why no nomination of "Trash"? Easily a better episode than "Heart of Gold".
And did they bother nominate any Firefly episodes in 2002? Or is this another case of someone waking up and only realizing how good Firefly was after the DVD came out?
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
In 2003 (for 2002) Serenity was nominated.

Cool.
You are truly a font of Sci Fi info.

And crappy episodes of Buffy and Angel. They show all the movies and the episodes at the convention and so I watched all the stuff I had not seen. The Buffy episode won and it was crap!!!! (I suspect if I had been watching the show for the full year then maybe I would have liked it better.) This is the danger of the short form drama presentation. These things do not constitute a whole story but part of a story arc. So somebody voting on the Hugos is only going to vote for them if they already watch the show.
