"Friends"...does anyone still care??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mightyb

Man, talk about a final series finale dragging on and on....

Is it just me, or does it seem that this show is already over and off the air??? All the "favorite episodes" and repeats this week make it seem like the show ended ages ago....

Posted by: NJChris

It also makes me realize I don't miss it. I know it had been going down the toilet in the past few years (when they made every one of them DUMBER THAN A ROCK).

Posted by: IJustLikeTivo

I just want to know how they end things. I just wish they'd quit draging it out ad nauseum.

Posted by: okleydokley

I'm with you...
I really liked Friends a couple years back, but the last two years have been bad. They should have followed Seinfeld’s example and ended while they were still on top..

Posted by: scubagal

I am tired of the way the network is doing all these 'Best of', but that is the way the seasons work, most of my shows have been showing repeats. If it wasn't for 'reality' tv that just throws stuff in and ignores prime time scheduling of the past- maybe it would be more noticible...

But as for Friends, I do care. It is one of the shows I consintently find funny and watching all the repeats on my season pass reminds me how much I really like this show. I actually like the later episodes more then the earlier ones, but very few don't make me laugh....

I will miss it and if I can figure out a way to get a deal, will buy all seasons on DVD.

Posted by: bigpuma

I care. I hate the fact that they are doing so many repeats, which I haven't been watching, but I want to see the rest of the episodes. I still think it is funny, although maybe not as good as before.

You got that right. I watch a couple of episodes a week from seasons 1-5 or so and they are great. I know all the jokes, but still find it amusing...like seinfield.

Posted by: zaknafein

I killed my SP about 2/3rds of the way through last season, when it become completely unbearable. I'm quite happy to have that 22 minutes of my life per week reclaimed.

Posted by: DougF

I'll watch to the end, to get closure on the whole Ross and Rachel thing if nothing else.

But the show is definitely down in quality over the last few years. Shark porn? C'mon writers, you can do better than that!

"ER" in it's 10th season is still giving me plenty of reasons to watch. "Friends" in it's 10th season is not.

At least with ER they have practically turned over the whole cast. Only Dr. Carter has been on every year. This allows so many new characters and storylines, as well as all the "ER life saving drama stuff"...

With friends, you still have the same 5....it's tough to maintain new infesting stories time after time. (although the simpsons continue to do it!)

Posted by: scubagal

actually it is 6....

That's what happens when you only film 18 episodes for the season. Lots of
padding just to drag the season out a little bit longer.

The final 3 episodes will be shown starting next week. Finally!

I could care less.

(yes, that is what I mean...........)

Posted by: TivoGeezer

I still enjoy it but I thought the so called "Viewer's Choice" #1 best episode was a lame choice. There were a lot better than that. My wife and I thought they should have picked "The One With The Boobies" from the first season. Hilarious!

Posted by: TeeSee

The only reason I still watch is because I've made it this far and I want to see how it all turns out. But it's gotten to a point to where it's almost a burden to watch.

Posted by: DLiquid

When is the finale? I haven't watched Friends in at least 5 years but I would check out the finale.

May 6th........episode called "The Last One"

Posted by: timckelley

My hunch is that they're going to get Ross and Rachel together. They alluded to it at the end of one of the recent episodes where Rachel said to Ross: "With you and me, it's [sex] never off the table."

That being said, I will be disappointed if that happens. What I'd like to see happen is for Rachel to find another guy, and Ross to be left out in the cold. There's something about his character I don't like, and it would be sweet to see him left in the cold.

Posted by: scooterboy

I still watch, still like, and am looking forward to the finale.

I would like to see Rachel left out in the cold.. OK, OK, I also dislike the Ross character, but many times now, Rachel was totally done with Ross right up until he got a girlfriend, then she moves back in.. She only wants him when she can't have him...

Posted by: dswallow

I still watch it; though it's something I let accumulate and don't worry about much then when there's a lull in new episodes of things I do watch, play catch up with these.

I'm looking forward to more episodes. I'm not looking forward to it being the finale, though. ;)

I stopped watching when the monkey left...

You wouldn't think so from reading some of the entries in this forum.

But I still care, and I care quite a bit. This is a show that I've watched for ten years without fail, and I think a couple of months of talk about the finale isn't too much for other people to stomach when it's going off the air. I mean, in two months, you won't have to hear about it anymore.

 Friends is still one of my favorite shows. I have seen every episode at least twice, and I will greatly miss it.

Not particularly. Monica just annoys the hell out of me, so I haven't watched it in at least 2 years.
My wife will be disappointed and probably cry, but I'll be upstairs watching baseball.

Posted by: BelugaWhale

My wish for the last episode is that they'll allow Ross to be intelligent without being an a**hole or a goof. Annoys the heck out of me when they can't allow characters to be smart without huge personality flaws.

I haven't watched in a couple of years, but I'll watch the last episode if it doesn't conflict with anything else. And if it does, maybe I'll catch the repeat one day...

Posted by: Zevida

I'm suprised it's ending so early in May, what with May being sweeps month and all...I guess it doesn't matter because NBC can't demand more advertising money for a show that's going off the air, but it would boost their overall numbers.

I agree that Monica has become annoying the past few seasons. I think it started after the wedding. The episode they went on the honeymoon was AWFUL and that's when her character really shifted IMO.

As for me, I don't know that I "care" that Friends will be off the air, but I do like watching the show. I'm still hoping that Ross ends up with Mona, because I think she was his best match. Mona liked things about Ross that everyone else (including Rachel) just made fun of. Rachel and Ross aren't a match at all, even less now than before, and them getting together is only to please the "fans." I didn't start watching the show until the 5th or 6th season, so I couldn't care less about the R&R stuff. I just want to see the final episode be an episode and not a shmaltzy tearjerker happy ending.

Watch them repeat it wherever they possibly can to milk it for all it's worth. That may mean just using it to lead people into other things that they're having trouble with. ;)

Don't forget they'll be airing the "reunion" special in the fall. They're filming it now while everyone's together. Quite the "reunion".

Posted by: DreadPirateRob

I care. Quite a bit actually, mainly for reasons that Angie touched on: it's been part of my life for 10 years. It started right as I finished college and was starting law school, and for some reason the show seemed to connect with me more than a typical sitcom. I actually grew to care about the characters, which I never did with a show like Seinfeld even though I loved it - Friends is unusual for a sitcom in that it has a lot of heart, and is not afraid to be emotional, and that's part of what drew me to it.

I'm also an unabashed R&R fan, and I will be sorely disappointed if the show ends with anything other than the two of them riding off into the sunset together. I mean, c'mon, it's always been about them. The writers have done their best to quash it by making both Ross and Rachel completely unlikeable at times (which has evidently worked with some of you), but it's still undeniably there.

Yes, the show's quality has gone down over the years (though not as much as people think - it's actually been more up and down than anything else, with somewhat of a resurgence fairly recently), but it can still be laugh-out-loud funny, and still can touch you, and that's about all I ask for in a comedy. Plus, you are watching 6 very good actor/resses doing what they love to do, with people they truly care about - somewhat of a rarity these days. I sat down and watch the last two VC episodes recently (they had piled up on my Tivo) and - while they surely weren't the best eps ever - I was amazed at how fast they grabbed me. I'd seen both eps several times each, but it sucked me in just the same. And I got goosebumps at the end of each when R&R kissed.

Yeah, I'm going to miss it.

Hear hear!

If Ross and Rachel don't end up together after everything that's gone on these past two seasons, I'll be seriously miffed. They belong together. It's been kind of clear from the beginning. Even during the breakups, it was obvious they were meant for each other. So, the writers better make 'em end up together, or else I'll be miffed. I'd even delete my Season Pass in protest. ;)

Say what you will about the show... it has some off moments, and the last two seasons have been subpar in comparison to the rest of the series, but Friends has set a high standard for itself over the past decade. It's hard to keep that standard going after 10 years, but I give them credit for trying.

But even with the occasional bad episodes the past few years, you will never, ever find an episode as laughably bad as "The One With Russ".

IIRC, that turned out to be an unsubstantiated rumor.

No kidding. That was on last week sometime and I turned it off right away.

Really? Good to hear.

Posted by: scubagal

Hee. I also think the ones with the Monkey are my least favorite..hated that stupid monkey. I think my favorite season for laughs was the early Monica/Chandler hiding relationship episodes...

"I'm Joey, I'm disgusting, I make low budget adult films"

"I'm Joey, I'm disgusting, take my underwear off in other people's homes"

Posted by: Rcrew

I was going to add some substance to this discussion, but by the time I got to the end of the thread I discovered I just don't care anymore...

That is, in fact, a rumor that wasn't true. Several of them have refused to do the project and are holding out.

I just don't get all the Friends hatred. Just wait a couple of months and you won't freaking have to hear about it any more. Yeesh.

Same here, Angie. I can understand not liking the show, but there's no reason to make a huge deal about it.

Of course, there's just about one month left of Friends. Then we'll have peace and quiet...... until Joey debuts later this year. :)

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

Good. I'm not alone. I was beginning to feel a bit like a Willie Nelson song at a Junior High dance. :D

Posted by: DougF

I certainly don't hate it. A big part of me will be sad to see it go. My wife and I started watching it together and and it's been a constant in our nine years together.

But, just like so many others, it went on too long. For quality reasons, I wish it would have ended a couple of years ago.

But it's hard for any show to keep high quality after this many years, though. I give them credit for being a top 10 mainstay even into the 10th season.

Posted by: SparkleMotion

Haven't watched it for at least a couple of years.

Don't miss it. Not a fan. :)

Since you quoted my post about the "reunion" show, I'm not sure if the second part of your post was directed at me. Just in case it was, let me make it clear that I'm still a fan of the show (as I said earlier in the thread) - I just thought the fake reunion special was a lame idea. I'm glad it's just a rumor.

You're not alone! And my favorite Friends line of all time is STILL...

"How many cameras are actually on you?"

:p

No, no, it wasn't directed towards you! I'm a big fan and I thought the idea, while interesting, probably wasn't in the best interest of the Joey spinoff.

No, I was remarking that it seems like anyone who starts a Friends thread ends up with about 1/3rd of it being "man this show sucks when will it go away" type posts, which get old after a while.

People have opinions. Said opinions may not agree with yours. Doesn't mean they are any less valid.

Posted by: smak

Well this thread isn't typical because it asks an opinion, but on a normal Friends thread, or whatever thread, there are plenty of people who chime in with "this show sucks"

People wouldn't go up to two people in the supermarket talking about Friends, with "Friends sucks", but they feel welcome to interupt threads in bulletin boards all the time.

This has to do with anything, not just TV

-smak-

Posted by: mightyb

I basically started this thread because for the most part, I had forgotten that Friends still hasnt' "finished", since it has been off the air with new episodes for so long now....

Well put. I hadn't thought of it that way before, but you're absolutely dead on.

Edited to note: I've never understood people who go into regular show threads just to say "man I hate this show" when they are neither watching it or care.

It's just that I could sense the frustration in your words and then it looked like your avatar was giving me this stern look that penetrated right into my very soul...

...I'm KIDDING!!!

But your avatar does look kind of unhappy...

Posted by: mitkraft

I don't understand all the "Friends has been spiraling into the abys" comments. Right about season 7 or 8 (I think) I thought they were only getting funnier and funnier. I think it was the ninth season where my wife and I would ache from laughing so hard by the time the show was over. I think these are the seasons/shows where Joey, Phoebe, and Chandler get more plot time and their characters really grow.

I mean come on, Monica's afro hair in the humidity of the bahamas, Clasic!

Just my 2 cents.

Posted by: scubagal

I agree w/ mitkraft.. except the hair, that stung a little being a 'curly girl' with my own sad, sad memories of bad vacation hair ;)

But I actually think the show gets funnier... and I especially love the addition of Mike- that episode where he and Ross were hanging out and he grabbed the ringing phone so Ross wouldn't answer it... ahh, I am cracking up just thinking about it!

"You know, drank some beer, Mike played with the boundaries of normal social conduct."

I am so easily amused...... :D

I agree. That is why I stay away from the reality show threads (except Joe Schmo, which doesn't count). To go in an flame on them would be trollish.

(Not technically a YAMM but this is #1111 for me.)

I will have to find my similar picture...but sadly, it wasn't a perm.
