I need the Judging Amy SOAK-spoilery, sorta

This is only spoilery if you're completely and totally behind in watching all the episodes.

The problem with catching up with a drama in syndication is that the episodes are all out of order and you end up getting confused. I have a couple of questions and I know there are some big fans around here that might be able to help me out.

I'll start with my first question which isn't really a plot question...did they know Richard Crenna was dying when they wrote him leaving for China?

And from this season-because I don't want to wait for the reruns to come around...why did Bruce miss Amy's wedding?

Answers:

Richard Crenna leaving for China was before they knew about his death. The episode with the 'scare' that was just on was at least a year before his actual death I believe, different season because Vincent was still around. The episode where he actually dies and they write it in is truly one of the best episodes they ever did, Barbara Hall came back to personally write this episode after she left for JoA because his death was a total surprise and not a storyline. It is called Requim and I believe it might be coming up on the late afternoon TNT shows soon.

This year- Bruce did not go to the wedding, although the wedding never really took place. Bruce was all set to be in the wedding and at the last minute, Sean showed up claiming Bruce was sick and Amy basically called him a liar and was visible upset. Basically Bruce didn't like Stu and didn't think he was good enough for Amy, which I believe comes up in a later episode after all the aftermath of her leaving him at the alter.

I know we saw plenty of Amy doubting herself in choosing to marry Stu. There's also the exchange where she accuses him of 'fixing' everything by getting her to change her mind, during which he turns right around and 'fixes' it.

But I always thought Amy not seeing Bruce there helped push her over the edge to cancel the marriage.

And I was never sure if Bruce's decision to stay away was purely his conviction that Stu wasn't right for her, or included a healthy dose of how he would really like to be with her himself.

Probably both Rcrew (by the way, LOVE the avatar).

The one thing that has always annoyed me about this show is the Amy/Bruce Kiss- then nothing ever said to acknolwedge what exactly happened....

Posted by: Rcrew

Oh yeah the kiss. They used it during the period Amy's ex was trying to win custody, but then had him elected not to. That 'redeemed' him before pretty much leaving the show.

I see it as one of those things we're left to mull over, and add into backgrounds and character development.

Not being a writer, I wonder if many similar 'events' are put in as potential future story lines, ultimately used or just dropped.

I know with a lot of the shows I watch, that's precisely what happens. They write things in with the expectation of taking it farther, and then when they actually have it on-screen, it'll have no heat or just doesn't play well so they'll drop it.

The opposite happens too...on Friends, the Monica/Chandler storyline was just supposed to be a couple month fling, and the combination was so good they kept it for good.

Okay, on to more Judging Amy questions....

-So did they not know Richard Crenna had cancer before he died? His death was a surprise? I'm just trying to figure out the timeline-the episode where he leaves for China and they put off the wedding was on yesterday, and I know he dies in an upcoming episode but I wasn't sure if they knew he was dying on the last episode he was on or if it was a surprise.

-With regards to Eric...what happens to him? I've gotten far enough to see his case kept in juvenile court, but I'm impatient and want to know what happens. :D

-Does Gillian lose her pregnancy? I've been wondering why she's pregnant in some of the syndicated episodes, but then there's no child (or if there was, I missed it) later in this season's episodes. I know she goes into a coma for some reason, but I don't know why.

I'm going to spoiler tag this, just in case, but all the answers to your questions are below, Angie:

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

(1) I don't know anything about what the crew/writers knew about Richard Crenna. Jared and Maxine had an on-again/off-again relationship before they finally got engaged. Towards the beginning of Season three, things were heating up, when Jared had to go to China. He came back and proposed at the end of season three. Maxine only unofficially accepted, and only sometimes wore the engagement ring. In Season four, Jared comes back from China to get married to Maxine, only to then have to go back to China when his son is kicked off the board. Jared then has a heart attack and passes away while in China, a few days before the "suprise" wedding Jared and Maxine had been planning that weekend.

Richard Crenna's death was a suprise. I believe the episode you are referencing is "Boys to Men", when Jared's son shows up and Jared has to go back to China. That is episode 4.09, and then "Requiem" which is the episode about Jared's death is 4.20. The character/actor did not appear in any episodes in between, although he and the wedding was mentioned a lot.

The above link is to an o-k episode guide for Judging Amy. The descriptions of the episodes are only slightly better than the TiVo guide data, but at least you can see what the oder is and find where you are and what is coming up.

(2) As you said, Eric's case stays in Juvy court. The episode "Judging Eric" is his trial with Rosie O'Donnel doing a not half bad guest spot as the visiting judge presiding over his trial. Eric had told Maxine that the knife used to kill Jason was his (Eric's), but he told everyone else that is was Jason's. Maxine wanted Eric to tell the truth, but Eric lied under oath and said that the knife was not his. Eric was found non-deliquent and exonerated of all charges. During the celebration party, Eric started to leave and Maxine followed him ouside. Eric told Maxine that his boyfriend's parents did not approve, so the two were going to run away to Canada to do logging. Maxine pretty much said he was foolish, and when he walked away she screamed at him to come back, but he kept going (everyone else still inside celebrating). That was episode 4.17 and we have not heard from Eric since.

(3) Gillian finds out she is pregnant early in season four, "Roses and Truth." Gillian turns into an utter horror IMO, who is essentially a psychotic manic-depressive control freak the rest of the season. Gillian and Peter find out in "Sixteen going on Seventeen" that it is likely their baby will have birth defects. Gillian spends the rest of the season in denial, and she and Peter grow apart as he goes to support groups and wants her to face the facts while she is believes that since the conception was a miracle, then baby will be fine because he is a miracle. In the season finale, the baby is born at the end (completely normal, no defects), but the last shot is Gillian flat-lining on the table after an emergency C-section. (spoilers for season 5) In the next season, we find out that Gillian has been in a coma for a few months. She eventually comes out of it and goes home. She had a near-death experience but no one believes her, and she is also resentful of the memories that Peter has of Walt (their son) that she doesn't get to share. She feels like she missed the time and Walt has trouble bonding to her. Peter and Gillian continue to grow apart until Gillian insists on a seperation. They are currently living apart and dating other people.

Oh, and this link has a slightly better episode guide: http://www.tvtome.com/JudgingAmy/season4.html

Thanks for that info. I'd been reading the tvtome episode guides but they don't say everything they could, of course, with regards to some things-like why Eric was gone and such. I have a few more questions but for the life of me, I can't remember what they were...:) When I remember, I'll ask.
