Joe Schmo 2 - I am excited!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: juslight

I loved the Joe Schmo show. My wife and I watched every show. It was the top priority of my Season Pass list, but we would always watch it live anyways because we just couldn't wait.

Now there is news of a Joe Schmo 2!!! I can't wait to watch this show. The writers, producers and actors were awesome in the first Joe Schmo. They were like a team of under-cover special agents creating a false reality for an unsuspecting test subject.

Does anyone know where I can check out info on Joe Schmo 2, (like the cast and location)?

Posted by: ufo4sale

I'm assuming that none of the actors from the first one are going to be in the second one?

Joe Schmo 2... Will it hit or miss? ;)

Posted by: muggum

We shot the show in Agoura Hills, California. The only returning cast member is Ralph Garman, the host. But the new cast is terrific!

For those unaware, Muggum has been posting since the first show was on, and is someone very near and dear to the show.

There is some info from both the press release and from Muggum himself on the gigantic TJSS thread ... basically, June 15th, this time there's a Joe AND a Jane, it's a spoof of dating shows, and Ralph is now pretending to be a horny British host instead of a horny American host~.

Posted by: cheerdude

Is there a time-frame on where JS2 will be on?

Posted by: SparkleMotion

Can't wait to see what the new equivalent of Ralph's Bee suit humiliation will be! :)

Posted by: MitchO

Muggum said that they just finished shooting about a week ago, and shooting took 2 weeks. Premiere is scheduled for Tuesday June 15th $$.

We regulars on the TJSS thread are admitting that the giant 90 page thread is both daunting and to some folks, annoying .. hopefully now that we're officially home here on TiVo boards, we can try to be more "normal" and have threads per episode like everyone else~.

If you're interested in the show but was afraid of the giant insane thread .. check out the last 2-3 pages (88-90 as of this writing) ... it contains great new info on the DVD for the 1st season, and Muggum's exciting announcement.

I'm trying to figure out how they succesfully work Garman into the show? Was it that the Schmoes just didn't recognize him? Or, did they recognize him but they had to come up with a cover story that this was a new gig for him? OR, are the schmoes British?

That's like saying the Grand Canyon is this little hole in the ground in Arizona. ;)

I'm glad to see someone started a TJSS II thread. Those who followed the old show may remember that little thread we still have going elsewhere in TV Talk...

To answer questions:

* TJSS II is set to air starting June 15th on Spike TV.
* The TJSS I DVD is due in stores a week later, on June 22nd. Check your favorite DVD site or store for more...you can even pre-order it in many places.

Our Muggum (we tend to feel he's one of the thread family ;) ) confirmed in the other thread that while the original cast isn't a part of TJSS II - for obvious reasons - the one and only Brian Keith Etheridge is indeed back for the ride in an off-camera capacity. And maybe he'll fire up his computer, log into the TC "ekb" account and join us again at some point. ;)

No matter what happens to "Joe and Jane", I'll always have fond memories of the original. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy watching it, I even got to meet some nice people because of it, both on this board and off of it. (2 for 2, by the way, both of the "Schmo-heads" I met were a delight to be with in person.)

I can only surmise that he fully pulled off the role of "Derek Newcastle", the "randy" British host he plays in TJSS II. ;)

Basically, they had to disguise him and make him use a British accent!

I'm sure there was still a chance that if he showed up as "Ralph, your smarmy host", folks may not make the connection...remember, the original show's exposure wasn't exactly on network TV. But I'm sure they didn't wanna take that chance...and they sure as hell probably didn't use a bee costume!

:)

As I posted in the other thread, Ralph Garman was on 'vacation' from his radio duties for 2 weeks, a couple of weeks ago on KROQ in Los Angeles. I have not heard him mention that Joe Schmo II was the reason, but I also don't listen to all 4 hours, like I use to.

It is hard to imagine how they will be able to catch the magic that Matt Kennedy Gould brought to the original. The final show brings tears to my eyes when I see his reaction to the "reveal". It was priceless. I will be looking forward to that same emotional ending to this show.

I told my wife about JS2 this morning and she said "Oh, no". She did not follow the first show like I did.

Um, don't forget that the number of posts per page is customizable. That means that the number of pages YOU see isn't necessarily the same number as someone else who is differently configured!

Yes for others it's actually pages 945 thru 1001. ;)

This is sooo cool. I'll get back from TC-Con '04 in Las Vegas, and have TJSS2 to look forward to the following week. June is going to be a great month!

I'll second the "they must have really disguised Ralph" for the role. It is possible to do of course, and you'd be surprised how much of our recognition is tied to voice and voice patterns, so mixing that up will be extra confusing.

I'm a tad concerned again about how the Joe and Jane will take it, but I have faith, given the last show, that they'll be as sensitive. It totally made the difference for me between JS and other farce type reality shows. And also how quick they were to quash the feelings that Matt was starting to show towards some of the female guest-I'm assuming they'll take the high road there again...which, now that I think about it, given that it's all a spoof, could be REALLY funny.

And if you're looking for information from Muggum, our insider, you can always run a search of his posts-which will help weed through all the posts on the last thread. He does a very nice job of giving us little tidbits without revealing anything important at all. Also lots of good information about the JS DVD.

And of course, the entire TJSS II will be based on two people on a RELATIONSHIP SHOW. How does one handle people falling for other people? How do you handle, say, "Jane" falling for one of the actor guys or the new "Joe" falling for one of the actresses? You can't quash it quickly (like they did with Matt) because people falling for other people is part of the (fake) show...

Hmm, this was a challenge.

But it was the perfect route for TJSS II to take. The relationship shows are all the rage in reality TV today. Sitting about 5 feet to my left is the cover of next week's TV Guide...you guessed it... "THE NEW BACHELOR / He's rich. He's handsome. Why can't he get his own date?"

Some of this is the original thinking I had about TJSS I. If you sign up for a relationship show, to meet someone on TV, it's my thinking you're pretty much game for anything they can throw your way. Now, hopefully, Muggum and company were able to still handle this as deftly as they handled Matt's well-being...

It's been an invaluable resource having Muggum here. I know we're sort of the JS "superfans" (no, I can't imitate the "da BEARS" guy), so we're almost a home base for him, but we appreciate him, too.

And, if the new thread folks search far enough, they may actually be able to figure out who Muggum is in connection with the show! ;) (No, he's not Matt Kennedy Gould...) hehehe

We were faced with a difficult challenge when we took on the relationship genre. You will see how we handled the romantic aspects, and can you judge for yourself whether what we did was ethical. We obviously felt a tremendous responsibility for the well-being of our Joe and Jane, and kept that in mind throughout. But it was tough.

All that being said, if you're familiar with The Bachelor, you will get a kick out of 'Last Chance For Love' =) Derek Newcastle will deliver some lines a la 'You're dead to us,' I promise!

I expected nothing less from you and your merry band, Mr. M. And I'm thankful you camped out here during TJSS...you are well-aware how we obsessed fans feel about that...the same way you do.

Woo hoo! But the thing I'll never forgive you or the JS staff for... making me watch that televised dreck... just so I know how well you guys will be parodying it! ;)

I keep having these really amusing mental images of a bunch of women, a bachelor type Joe Schmo, and all the women giving him the cold shoulder but one, and that one is just like....WTF? This could either play really well or be a total disaster. Knowing how the first one went, though, I'd bet the farm on the first option.

If any other group of creators, producers, writers and crew were doing this show, I'd have almost no faith in it being at least a little sympathetic to the Schmos feelings. But as it is, I am quite excited about seeing them pull it off because of the great way they treated Matt.

Edited for a note: The Bachelor has always been the one reality show I couldn't stomach. But just so I'll get the inside stuff, I think I'll start watching this new one-it's only two episodes in if anyone else is interested in doing the same.

At this rate, this will be a great new frontier for Muggum and the gang.

Reality shows will start paying them to parody them! The reason? People like you and me will start watching those OTHER shows, just to see what JS is parodying. And their ratings will go up, because lots of people like us...who wouldn't log minute one with those shows...will feel like we have to watch! ;)

Posted by: juslight

Muggum,

Can you tell us what the set up is for guys vs girls on the show? Is there one guy and lots of girls, or one girl and lots of guys? Is it set up like paradise hotel, where guys and girls couple off?

Or, is it completely different than other dating shows?

Seriously! I wouldn't waste a second with the Bachelor series-and it's honestly the only one I can say I haven't the stomach to watch just on it's own merits. Which is saying a lot, since I watched all of some real stinkers-and real dating stinkers at that. This is gonna be fun. :)

Posted by: Inundated

I've watched a couple of "dating reality shows", but they're more along the lines of the ones you see on (I believe) the Discovery Channel...sort of the "look at human behavior" things. And yes, I'm not proud of it, but I've logged some time with "Blind Date". (Shudder!) But that's basically a comedy, and is mostly only watchable for the funny "pop-ups". And in very, very small doses.

So, the "relationship genre" is ripe for the picking...and let's just hope they got a few choice plums out of it! I'll tell ya, tho...it's gonna be tough to top Ralph coming in on the white horse in that red getup!

Posted by: muggum

I've got to be careful here, but I think it's safe for me to say that the mansion contains lots of guys and girls. And we're parodying the big relationship shows like The Bachelor and For Love or Money (although before the end of the show, we end up parodying probably ten or fifteen different shows).

Posted by: mt1

This sounds so good. Can't wait!

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

Heh heh. The Bachelor and For Love Or Money-the two series I've never gotten into. Figures-I spend months watching reality shows thanks to The Joe Schmo show and its getting me interested in them, only to be foiled in the second coming by the two shows I never watched. :D

Posted by: SparkleMotion

I'm looking forward to "The Littlest Schmo"! ;)

Yep, those are two reality shows I've never gotten into either. And I don't intend to watch. But I will watch js2 because I want to see how great a job muggum does this time.

I definitely second the motion for weekly threads on this show. That first thread got way out of hand and the person who started it didn't even get the title spelled correctly. Blasphemy, they should hang him from a rope!

Heh!

Did you EVER, in your wildest dreams, think your "Will It Hit Or Miss" thread would still be around in the spring? ;)

And I don't think I'll log a LOT of time with "The Bachelor". I would like to hold food down ;) But I'll probably check in once or twice a show just to see their "devices" and regular production elements...and later this summer to see Muggum and company tear those elements apart ;)

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

Hookbill. Heh. You are funny.

I watched a snippet of this Bachelor already-mostly because he's done two things that amuse me greatly.

-He called the wrong girl's name during the first elimination, and then panicked.

-They have a spy who has infiltrated the women who is giving her commentary to The Bachelor, which is kind of interesting.

If those two things are any indication, this go-round might be more amusing than the previous. Or at least I'm hoping it will be. :D

I thought it would post and last about 1-2 days and disappear. I never anticiapated it going on as long as it has. It amaze me that it still comes up on the front page. I have to think it's got to be one of the largest threads here on these boards.
