AV & Firewall question

Just wondered what others in the UK use for Firewall and Anti-Virus software - and how it compares to Norton's Internet Secruity package.

I use Norton Internet Security and, oddly enough, it compares pretty well with the Norton Internet Security package. :D

I am quite happy with it. Be prepared to either upgrade annually, or start paying an annual subscription for updates.

The only issue I had was when I tried running it on Windows 2000 Server. It won't run the antivirus on a server OS, and it won't automatically start the firewall at boot-time. They expect you to buy a corporate version for a server system.

I've just hit a problem with Norton - in that it is no longer ad blocking or auto-virus checking e-mail.

But it settings all say everything is enabled.

Manual virus checks still work - it still reports instrusions (and the like) - but no cookie or ad stuff is working. No web blocking etc. but all is enabled.

Norton said run a virus check - then re-install.

Done that - no difference.

Norton Europe go home at 3pm (UK time) on a Wednesday!

i've just had to go with Norton IS to meet requirements imposed by employers to allow me to use my pc to work, unpaid, from home via vpn - i need my head examined.

anyway, i've noticed my machine running at 100% a fair amount of the time recently. on closer examination it turns out that there are a few more processes running than before, all norton internet security related.

i was never aware of the freeware Zone Alarm version eating up my measly 900mhz machine. always used Norton AV (lumped in with systemworks 2003) - perhaps now i've the whole family together they've decided to live it up :)

not much help i guess but if you're thinking of trying something else then give ZA a chance, it's free so nought to lose. spybot is so good at catching cookies it's starting to get annoying - need to read the instructions i suppose.

half day closing on wenesdays!!! what do they think they are, shopkeepers?

"Zone Alarm Free" and "AVG Free" in use here. Hmmm... am I sensing a pattern there? :D

No problems with either. Well, okay. Somtimes AVG can't get updates, but a quick patch of the INI file sorted that out!

I did occasionally find Norton processes going mad and taking 100% of the system processing.

i use M0n0wall for my firewall, and nod32 for AV nod32 is the best on the market. its not the cheepest but it works very well.

It apparently is the anti-virus part of the process - mainly the 'scan every file before using it' part. The new 2004 version of AV is a lot more process heavy than 2003. I've read comments on this in a couple of places now.
Do you ever get the 'NAV is waiting to scan file xxx' little box popping up in the corner of the screen? I get that fairly often.. not good on a 2.4G machine :/

I now suppress the popup box, but it still performs the scan. It seems to be dynamically scanning a lot more data files than it used to, and not just the executable files. I hope there is a reason for it, since it can delay processes significantly.

Occasionally I have seen the NAV waiting message - and a message on every e-mail send.

This stopped last night.

I use McAfee Virus Scan; switched because Norton seemed to be clogging up my system in some undefinable way.

VirusScan is far too willing to pop up info in the system tray, but apart from that seems to works fine.

I don't have the firewall software installed, preferring to have faith in the hardware one in the router.

I use AVG free version on all my systems. My only experience with Norton was with my laptop as it was preinstalled. When the trial period was up, I decided to remove Norton and switch to AVG. The uninstall created havoc on the laptop, screwed up drivers and deleted some of my data. It took me hours to get it sorted out.
Needless to say, I wouldn't give houseroom to anything with the Norton name.

For firewall, I always used ZA or ZA Pro, until I got my router which has a built in firewall.

I now use AntiVir from www.freeav.com and Kerio personal firewall from www.kerio.com all free and both work with all my other software (not true for other products I tried).

My Norton appears to be OK (hopefully).

It seems the uninstall doesn't quite uninstall everything - and something which was corrupt wasn't being removed.

Two programs from Symantecs website do a full uninstall - and reinstalling after running these seems to make things OK again.

Heres hoping

I run Zone Alarm (the free option) on most PCs, with Norton Antivirus 2004. I didn't get on with the Norton firewall that came free with one PC - much prefer Zone Alarm's interface and notification style.

I have noticed that NAV 2004 is a bit busier than 2002 - but not unbearably so. Never noticed any overhead problems with ZA.
