I'm on DVD #3 of Season 1.
So far, the show isn't intereesting at all. With Doyle dead, there are only two characters, one of which is the Cordelia, and Charisma is a terrible actress.

Buffy hooked me with character development...I hope Angel hit its stride soon.

It does. It spent the first season finding its voice, but it got better and better afterwards.

I'm of the opposite opinion - I loved Buffy and I never really liked Angel. I actually thought the first part of Angel season 1 was pretty decent, but I think a lot of the storylines of the show are pretty awful.

And my opinion (opposite of your opposite) is that Angel has always been great with a few mediocre episodes thrown in.

What I always found about Angel (even as far back as season 1) is that the show would be just OK about 25 minutes in, then something would happen that made you actually sit up and pay attention. There was no way you were changing that channel at that point. It would suck you right in.

With all shows, I don't care what genre, there are great episodes, good episodes, so-so episodes and bad episodes. No one is perfect 100% of the time. We just hope that the good and great outweigh the so-so and bad. I think Angel did that during it's run.

Angel gets better, but you can't expect it to be too much like Buffy, or you'll be continually disappointed. Buffy story arcs tended to be much tighter than Angel story arcs. But Joss does a good job of winding things back around - little details in Angel can come up and play a big role many episodes in the future. That happened to some extent in Buffy as well, but it's even more so on Angel.

I HATED Cordelia coming in to Angel, and through most of the first season. But she really grew on me and now, most of the way through Season 3, I really like her (though I preferred her as a brunette). I also never really like Wesley, and just as I started to think he was tolerable on Angel, he got worse. I keep hoping some hell beast will just finish him off and put us all out of his misery . . .
