Trouble for SGC.
This thread says it stands for National Intellengence Dept, or nothing:

I was going to remark that the NID is civilian oversight to the SGC. Then I wondered about Colonel Maybourne.
Gateworld says:
quote:
A civilian branch of the United States government, which appears to have a significant military component. The agency is devoted to the protection of Earth, and thus works with -- and often comes into conflict with -- the S.G.C.
edit - ok, I took the thread title Stargate Question - what does NID start for? to mean why was the NID created. The other poster went with what does the initials NID stand for.

Start for? What the hell? Oops. I meant "stand for." Sorry. Carry on.

I remember in the show they did actually call it the National Intelligence Department - it was in an episode that air'ed in the past few months, though could have been a rerun or a new ep. Best guess is it was one of the last 4 of this season.

NID - Secret government agency that doesn't really exist "officially". There are plenty of them in real life, that's for sure.
