Just a heads up that starting tomorrow (or maybe only tomorrow 4/18) CompUSA has a Western Digital 160gb for $179 - $20 instant - $100 in MIR's. Good buy if you want to upgrade!

Looks like you have 3 HDVR2s you need to upgrade. Even though 23GB of that drive will be wasted at that price it is a cost effective 137GB to use in one of them. I will try to get that deal tomorrow.

Mail In Rebates, what a jip. That's like rebate "gambling" since you're never sure if you're ever going to see that rebate money ever again.

I've never had any problems getting my rebates....

I've purchased 160s from WD before with rebates and have never had a problem with them.

Be sure to save a copy of the UPC, receipt and form. I had a problem once (can't remember whether it was WD or Seagate), I e-mailed them; they said there was no record; I faxed the copy of the documentation and got the rebate reasonably promptly after all.

Some are bad about rebates. I know Phillips CDRW was one inparticular. 3 people including myself did not get back a check from Phillips a while ago when we all purchased and sent in the same rebate offer.
My biggest problem is remembering to send in the rebate before its too late. I have let so many go because of my procrastinating. I think I've learned my lesson though. Good Luck!

Add another $7 or so to that $59. Compusa is going to charge you sales tax on $159. You'll get your $100 rebate (probably) but there's no way to get back the $7 sales tax that you paid on that $100.
Is the $100 a rebate from CompUSA or manufacturer? Several times I've sent in some very large rebate claims directly to CompUSA and the sales tax thing always kind of irks me, I really get the feeling its a scam. They charge you sales tax on $159 and I bet they only give the government tax on a $59 transacation since thats what it ends up being after the rebate and pocket the $7 themselves.
Manufacturer's rebates are different. You're still getting screwed and paying the tax for $159 purchase when your really only making a $59 purchase but at least the tax is going to the government and not Compusa's coffers.

I could use this WD Drive to add a 2nd drive to my Tivo Series 2 40 hour, yes?

You can use this to add a second drive. You will need a bracket and remember you will only get 137GB usable of the 160GB. But no reason you cannot add this as a 2nd drive.

Ok, here's a Maxtor 160gb at Staples for a low $99.94 shipped free. No rebates.

Warning: CompUSA rebates are tricky
I bought a WD 160Gb from CompUSA in a deal that was similar to this one a couple of months ago. I went to fill out the rebate forms a *week* after receiving the drive and found that the date for submittal had already passed! I called them to verify this fact and then return the drive if it was true. They verified it was too late for the rebate *and* I would be charged a 15% restocking free since I had opened the package.
I'd wait for one of Circuit City's deals on 120Gb drives. I always get rebates from them.

haha, well i only have one HDVR2, the 3 is there because the model is now an HDVR3 (as it shows in sysinfo) but no one knows what it officially is now. and as for upgrading, with the 2 SA's with HMO, one at 150 and the rest of the tivo's, i've found i rarely am running out of space. i simply just go to another room :)

Rebate info for the 160GB at CompUSA
The sale is through the 24th (April) and delivery only.
Also - be sure to partition the drive down to 128 GB... (not like me!)

I called my local CompUSA (Bellevue, WA) and they said 50 in stock at $59 after rebates.
About partitioning a large drive; is that a series 2 thing? I didn't partition the 160MB B-drive-to-be before adding it and it's been perfectly happy for a couple of months.

If you don't use the LBA-48 upgrade disk to expand the space on your drive, you're fine. The only time you have problems is if you use the LBA-48 upgrade disk and attempt to use all 160GB without upgrading the kernel as well.
The guy who posted the partition message has people jumping on him in his own thread for claiming the upgrade tools don't work properly.

Thanks - I subscribed to the other thread as well, so I'm following both now :-)

The problem is I've read comments that seem to conflict about the process of using a large disk. One comment indicated that I needed to partition the large disk down to 128gig, others don't. Contradictory information doesn't surprise me in 7,000 threads with > 1,000,000 posts.
My 160 worked fine for a couple of months as well.

Was that a WD 160GB drive as well?
I'm not impressed even though I'm aware that not all HDs are necessarily designed to run 24/7.

If you are referring to me, you should re-read the thread. I never said the tools didn't work properly and I was "jumped on" for not providing as much information as one guy wanted.

I jumped on the 160 GB Seagate drives CompUSA had on sale for $79 (after $60 rebate) back in late February...got my rebate check last week...no problems.
Granted, the rebate check said it was from Seagate...not CUSA.

Same thing here - got my 2 (two; $70 and $30) rebate checks from WD on Friday.

I bought a WD 160 in 12/03 with rebates. I got all the rebates, which also cause the drive to be registered with WD for warranty purposes. When the drive failed, it was about 10 days after the *90 day* warranty had expired. CUSA had another such sale on 160's but were out of stock. I got the same drive at Staples for $99.94 with a *1 year* warranty, which, given the hassle I'd just had, I extended for another year for $10.
I don't want to start a rumor, but I wonder if WD (and others) have bad production runs and they dispose of drive lots in this manner (big rebates)?
