Nashville Star 4-17-2004 *spoilers*

Updating as the nite goes on.

Duets nite, but only for the folks that make it through, and even then, there may not be a guarantee. Terry Clark and Trace Adkins are the special guests.

First to the top 4, Brad Cotter (my pick as last week's top performer). Give him the beat boys, and free his soul. Had to love the Warren brother's reference to that song has been covered more than.... :D

Second to the top 4, (my other favorite), George Canyon. Son of a gun, that leaves some fun on the bayou! A reference to Terry Clark sharing Canadian heritage with George Canyon.

That leaves Matt Lindahl, Jennifer Hicks, and Lance Miller waiting for word.

With three contestants left, Lance Miller is sent to the stage leaving two left waiting. Lance sings that he's tired of this dirty old city. My take on Lance's singing, it's a tired old style that is been there and done that. Good, but not current. Too much Merle Haggard (which is not bad, if you're Merle Haggard).

At least Nancy O'Dell doesn't drag things on as long as Seacrest does. :p

Well, for the second time, Nashville Star will be picking a male winner. Jennifer Hicks is sent on her way, and Matt Lindahl comes on to sing a Roger Miller tune.

Matt's bio is heart tugging about giving up everything for her (his significant other) if necessary. He comes out with a cowboy hat on, but it's a ruse, covering up the ball cap. And off he goes to sing Chug-a-lug, Chug-a-lug. Again, totally different, totally entertaining, but will it last. Tracy Gershon tells that story to him, and Billy Greenwood does also. The Warren brothers stick up for Matt a little, but it's up to the audience at this point.

Here come the duets, first Brad Cotter with Terri Clark. Easy on the eyes, but hard on the heart. Not a bad performance.

Next up, George Canyon and Trace Adkins. They left something turned on at home. Another good performance. Nice to see that the contestants aren't totally star struck.

Back to real time (can only delay things so much), Trace Adkins and Lance Miller come on to sing I'm Trying. It's trying my ears at this point. Trace Adkins sounds fine, but Lance is still doing the Merle Haggard voice. Not to my tastes.

Here comes Terry Clark and Matt Lindahl. Better things to do. A nice up-beat tune for Matt. As I hear him sing it, I think of Rocky Horror Picture Show, my wife disagrees, but he seems like he'd fit in that movie.

Time to try to vote, hopefully the web site is working correctly this weekend.

I feel kind of bad. I had only a few minutes to vote last night-and I didn't get all my votes placed. I wanted to throw some votes to Brad but I ran out of time. I even had to vote before I'd done anything other than watch the little snippets at the end (Thank god for Tivo...:D) because I spent too much time at my niece's 1st birthday party. After watching the whole show, Brad should have gotten most of my votes.

But as always, I voted for Matt because darn it, he makes me smile and country music needs more of that.

Felt a little bad for Brad, too...his little snippet at the end was all mucked up and sped up and slowed down. But his performance was dead on. I don't know why I hadn't been impressed with him from the beginning. He's my practical favorite to win, with Matt being my non-practical, he won't sell many albums but he's great to watch favorite.

George landed a solid performance last night as well. He's stepping it up a bit, but not quite enough. I'm not sure there's any way that he's not going to win this whole thing. And even if he doesn't, he'll likely get a recording contract anyway (see Tracy Gershon's notes-they will occassionally give contracts to lower ranking musicians in the contest if they are deserving.)

I like Lance a ton but I think he's probably gone next week. He's too country and he knows it, which is okay, but it does get very old, as mentioned.

I was awfully glad to see John Arthur there performing at the charity event.

(And happy 2k post YAMM to me. :D)

I knew after last week's performance that Jennifer would be out. And I think she knew too. She didn't seem as confident as usual.

Brad Cotter is good, but in my opinion, he is too pop-sounding for my liking. But I'm one who likes traditional country, the twangier the better.

I think the final 3 will be Brad, George and Lance.

During the duets, Brad and George really held their own with Terri Clark and Trace Adkins. I didn't think Lance and Matt did as well with that.

Just my thoughts.

I was disappointed that Jennifer is gone. I didn't watch this show last year so I don't have any basis for comparison. Were there any females who made it as far as Jennier last season? Can anyone make a case that the show is a little skewed toward the male singers? Jennifer sang, I suppose, about the only Willie Nelson song that made sense for a female to sing. I don't think any of them did the Southern Rock music very well but that genre is also better for a male singer. Maybe they should have a Dolly Parton night to even things out. She certainly has written a lot of songs to chose from! And, Jennifer sang "Jolene" early in the season and did a really good job on it. I hope she gets a contract. I would buy her CDs. I'm tired of Lance and Matt is getting kind of silly I think. IMO Brad is probably the more talented and versatile performer but George will likely win unless he tries to play it too safe the next couple of weeks.

I'm trying to remember how far the women made it last year. The two finalists last year were men, but I'm thinking the women made it a little farther than this year, I'm thinking.

The women, minus Stacie Michelle, were very weak this year.

After more though, I'm really hoping Brad wins. While Matt makes me smile and brings some of the much-needed humor to the industry, Brad's songwriting is fabulous and he should be given a chance-AND he's ready for it.

Another good episode. I think Matt's performance with Terri was kinda bad. The styles were so much different and when you do a duet, you need to strike a compatible ground that you don't need to do when you sing solo. Also Lance is too old-fashioned to me. He has a great voice and is a good songwriter, but he seems out of place with George and Brad. Those 2 I see going into the finals.

Last year a female made it to the final 3 - she was better than Jennifer. In fact, I thought last years female (can't remember her name) should have come in second - she had a young Dolly Parton quality.

I think the final 2 will be George and Brad - different styles, depends if the audience is looking for a more traditional sound or a bluesier sound.

The contest is definately closer and more exciting this season!

Last year was interesting that way too-both finalists were so different. One had a very Mexi-country sound that I loved, and the other one was more traditional. It's shaping up to be similar this year.
