ok, i just got my TiVo...and i'm just wondering where it got those extra videos on the TiVo main screen when i press the tivo button...last week it was for a vacation to walt disney world, today i looked at it was a thing about van helsing's movie...does it download these over the phoneline? because the van helsing one is pretty good quality for being downloaded over a phoneline

are these based on what i view? tell me more about this, i'm interested, thanks!!

TiVo records the videos in the middle of the night from the Discovery Channel. It also gets some of its national guide data from that broadcast.

Do search for 'yellow star' and you'll get more info than you can imagine. Lots of people were upset over this when it started, but it sounds like you might like it.

Just to go on record for newbies. Those recordings are using a special area of the drive that is reserved for the TiVo service. They are not using any of your reported recording time.

In my observation, the national guide data is sent Monday, with a couple of "featurettes" at the end to fill time, with Thursday's broadcast being all "featurettes"

DirecTV DVR users have there TiVo yellow star ad's recorded off of directv's own channel, 582.

Just curious how do you get to these ads and Tivo specific videos on a DirecTivo. I don't think I have an actual Tivo buttton.

DirecTV button=TiVo button. Look in showcases.

If you unlock backdoors, you can view some of the footage it recorded that TiVo decided not to use later.

Ah well I don't have a Showcases selection in the Menu. Is that something I will get when my satellite gets done downloading the data?. It is still showing the 1-2 day thing.

Posted by: tomo_kun

well, the 1-2 day thing for more then 2 days is a bug in 3.1.1 and 3.1.1B, showcases come weekly.

Well I am not sure about all that. Cause I did just get my DirecTivo Friday.
So not sure if it is hanging yet.

My series 1 standalone TiVo has the yellow star, but not the accompanied video that the DirecTiVo people at this forum are talking about.

Does series 1 no longer get the special videos (and just text) or is this a DirecTiVo-only exclusive? I feel jipped! For once I actually wanted the video!

I have turbonet installed in my TiVo with all the cool hacks (Tivoweb-tcl), where do I go to see video that TiVo decided not to use? I have tystream installed, but not sure how to get at the unused video. Any pointers? I am not even sure the TiVo series 1 standalone's got this video to go along with the Walt Disney World contest.

My series 2 used to not get the videos because they weren't played on the Discovery Channel in my area. I get them now, but there have been blips when I didn't get them. I think it may be up to local affiliates to decide whether to air this stuff, and if they don't, there's nothing for your TiVo to record.

Or maybe it's also a series 1 thing. No idea on that.

Personally, I like them. Or at least don't mind them. I generally ignore the ads, but appreciate the trailers and interviews a lot. I know I could watch trailers on my computer, over the internet, but it's nicer to see them on my TV screen.

But the thing is I am a Dish Network subscriber, so my Discovery channel is not local. Anyone with Dish Network w/ standalone TiVo series 1 get the video?
