Have been very pleased with Pioneer DVR810H. I have a thinkpad 600E with a DVD drive that reads DVD Video. What software do I need to run the DVD-R format? Windows 98 Pentium 2.

A DVD-R should be the same as a DVD. However, some older DVD drives (especially older laptop drives in my experience) have trouble reading -R and +R disks. This is due to physical differences (different reflectivity) and I don't know of anything you can do about that with software.

Thank you for your help.. I feared that that was so.

You might want to check with IBM for a firmware upgrade for the drive. It's a long shot but I've heard of a few cases of older drives being firmware upgradeable to read -Rs.

I'll try but IBM is IBM as you know.

My experiences with IBM Thinkpad support have been very good but this one is fairly old so I'm not that hopeful. I think one of the 600s might have been their first with a DVD option. Or maybe it was one of the 7x0s but it was around that time.
If this is a corporate laptop, try your IT guy.

My preliminary contacts with IBM have been good. Perhaps I confused them with Microsoft. I'll pursue it further today and will let you know how it works out.
Thanks again.

My inquiry to IBM re upgrading DVD reader indicated my 600E machine was too old (4/99) but I was impressed with the volumes of data available on the web site. Thanks to Dave for referral.
