Tivo and Comcast Digital Cable connected via serial - how do I do it?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

In other words, do I need to go out and buy a serial cable? Does comcast provide one?
How do I know if Comcast in my area (Detroit) offers this feature?
The IR blaster screws up occasionally and it also take too long to flip through channels.
I'm hoping the serial connection will help that.
Thanks.

It should have come with your TiVo. Note that it'll only work with a Series 2. What is the model of your cable box? It needs to be a DCT-2000 series box I believe, and it will need to have a serial port on the back, obviously. So assume that you have all of that, AND COmcast has enabled the port in your area, just plug the cable into your digital cable box and tivo's port labled 'serial', and then go into your tivo preferences and change how it changes channel to serial control. You should be all set.

I have Comcast digital and a Series 2 Tivo, and the serial cable came with Tivo. I just hooked it up and bam! It worked. Also, there is still a lag in changing the channels...

SOme of the the lag would be due to the slow ir connection, but no matter what source you use, even a direct connection from an antenna or regular cable you will have the lag time that is required for the moeg encode/hdd/decode cycle. The serial control depends on the area, and if those boneheads have enbaled the serial control on the boxes. In all areas of the courty, D* boxes can be gotten that have serial control with TiVOs.
