Wheeee! We finally get a great shot of the Chloe-vage!

Way too many convenient implausibles for my taste in this episode.
- Chloe figures out that everyone's telling the truth to her, and she knows there's something weird about Clark in a town where every other freakin' person gets superpowers, but she doesn't backtrack her thinking and still dismisses Pete's first truth to her as a joke? At the very least, she should be suspecting Clark of being the Flash =P
- She has her first major headache right in the hospital? Nice timing.
- Hey look, the son of the teacher got instantly knocked out so he doesn't have to see Clark lift the car!
- Boy, it's something about how she managed to find every student with a deep dark secret just by looking around that hallway, huh? And even a closeted gay guy doesn't necessarily want to take his secret crush "to the prom".
Even beyond that, there's a few other things that bother me ... Chloe's such a good reporter, yet she's STUPID enough to TELL Lionel that "Hey, i recorded a major secret of yours and i'm the only one who can get to it." Why not just ask him to kill you right now, Chloe? She's well aware that he's had people killed before for knowing less. I also have some trouble with Pete deep down feeling that his love for Chloe is a bigger secret than, i dunno, Clark being FROM ANOTHER PLANET? I also don't really see how Clark is such a "big shadow" for Pete; he's good looking and all, but he constantly drives every woman who is interested in him nuts.
Not to be completely negative, i do like the Lana going to Paris thing. It makes perfect sense for her character, her development, and for Clark's development of getting past her. Then again, if she sent her application in last week, how does she already know she's going? :)
Weak episode.

I've started to read comics again after taking some time off and suddenly things like the kryptonite villains of the week don't seem so out there.
Actually quite tame considering the range explored in the comics. Of course you can get away with more 'fantasy' in comics, but it does remind me that Superman doesn't take place in our reality.
As for this episode, I was pleased to see one of my guesses be validated:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...589#post1500589
My predictions for the season end:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Linoel will try to kill Chloe, but he himself will die before he is able to complete it. His secrets about Clark will die with him, but I'm sure some documents will be left behind to be found later.

Well. it's really handy that:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Lionel has somehow managed to attach some sort of GPS device to Chloe, so now he can track her down in seconds, no matter where she is.
It's also convenient that the former LuthorCorp employee had the Levitas antidote right there in his garage fridge. Ya just never know when you might need that stuff. :)
And, I'm thinking that if Clark had actually jammed the needle in that hard, Chloe would have a crushed sternum, among other various injuries.
And, let me just add: Chloe, mazel tov.
BTW, no wonder Lex is so screwed up. His old man is evil incarnate. Lionel is just a handlebar mustache away from being Snidely Whiplash. :)

Am I the only one who hates Chloe? I thought I disliked her before this episode but anything I had remaining was torn down this episode. She's not in the comics, she's not essential, and I was honestly hoping that stuff would actually kill her. And Pete being in love with her made me lose respect for him too.
Lana won't move away at least not for more than a week or two. This whole "I've got to get out of here" theme will be revisited after high school though and she'll leave for years.
I was surprised to get the actual confession from Lionel. I'm not sure what this means for Lex, though.
I didn't think the coincidences in this ep were any worse than previous episodes. I'm surprised you guys have made it this far.

I laughed out loud at Clark and Cloe's "Pulp Fiction" moment.
Then I really laughed when she told Clark he did a "Pulp Fiction" on her.

I liked this episode better than Enterprise.........

That actually didn't bother me too much; Pete's "joke" wasn't weird enough, I think, to register after the fact, with all that was going on.
I do think, however, that Clark missed a golden opportunity, and shouldn't have. He KNOWS that Chloe has been so hot to get at his secret that she would throw away their friendship (she's done it before), so the moment he realized what she could do, he should have known that she would start asking him about it. And since he knew that he was immune, he should have planned a cover story that would have thrown her off the trail for years to come!
I don't think it would have taken a rocket scientist, much less a Superman, to come up with that plan...

I don't hate Chloe per se, but i find her to be less likeable as a character than i think they want her to be. I also don't care for Pete being "in love with her"; i'm sure you can turn most of her character traits into admirable ones (such as her ridiculous over passion for the news, gee she's "driven" and "determined"), but frankly Pete doesn't strike me as the "attracted to the strong woman" type. It's a convenient plot point for this episode and for the story arc in general.

There were a lot of details about the show I didn't like, most all of them have already been mentioned, but I still like the episode overall.
Thought Lionel's message on Chloe's voicemail at the end was cool.

Yeah, that was real cool.
His tone was awesome, almost as just a buddy calling. No need to call back...
And yet it put the fear of God into Chloe.
Sooo sweet.

The entire first season had a "Pete yearns for Chloe" mini-arc running under the surface. It mostly went away afterwards, but I (for one) thought this was a proper use of continuity. It may not be a "bigger" truth than Clark, but is more directly relevant to Chloe, and an issue Pete has been struggling with for a longer period of time.

Well, it was a "not bad" episode made better by the Chloevage... :)
Yeah, Chloe went off the deep end and was mad with power once she figured it out. Chloe has always been up there on the annoyance scale and lately she's been going up that chart more.
I did like people's reactions as they realize what they've said--- and Lana's revelations to Chloe.
Chloe basically was asking Lionel to have her stuffed in a 50 gallon drum and dropped off some pier in Metropolis--- but Lionel must feel that he's got her well enough not to worry about it which is strange. It's not like he said he's back off her father or would kill him if she told Lex anything.
Hummmmm--- don't know but I do know that Lionel Luthor is going to cross that line of restraint when desperation kicks in and all bets are off then.
Hey, at least Pete got to kiss her. maybe she should let have his sweaty, high school boy way with her and tone down her annoyance level a bit.

Did anyone else find it stupid that Chloe would tell Lionel that she recorded the confession and that she was the only one who knew how to get the messages. Isn't that like having a picture of someone in a compromising position and saying, "This is the only copy I have. If you destroy it, there will be no more evidence." Shouldn't she have said something like, "My mom knows the code to my VM" or "I'm not the only one with the code to get into my VM."
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Or "15 minutes from now I will have downloaded this from my voicemail into an internet account, which if I don't send an e-mail to once a day will send it to every news organization in North America."

After Chloe's absence in the last episode, I was glad to see a Chloe-centric episode this time. As the remaining episodes are going to focus on Lana, and Lex / Lionel themes, this was a nice wrap up for her for the season. And it brought her full circle - after being the only one Clark trusted about his being in Metropolis, to her betraying Clark to Lionel, to them rebuilding some sort of relationship.
And it focused on the central theme for this season: trust. And what it means to hide something from your loved ones.
Even more interesting is the Lex/Lionel teasers for upcoming episodes. They continue to emphasize the dichotomy between Lionel's and Jonathan's respective styles as fathers.
MY prediction for the season finale (possible spoilers, mostly speculation):
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
We will see 2 things happen in the season finale. 1) Jonathan and Lionel will leave the show permanently. Lionel to go to jail for the murder of his parents, Jonathan to possibly die as a result of the pact he made with Jor-El. This will set up the dichotomy for next season on how Clark and Lex cope with their respective losses, and how they feel about their responsibility for those losses. 2) All of Clark's friends will leave for the summer. Lana to Paris, Lex to run LuthorCorp in his father's absence, Chloe to move with her father whereever he gets a job, and I'm unsure about Pete.
Yes, these are pretty drastic predictions - particularly about Jonathan. I kind of like Pa Kent, so hope it isn't true, but it would make for good drama.
Posted by: Bryanmc
I stand firm in my assertion that Jonathan Kent will not be killed or leave in any way.
He is too important to the show and John Schneider is fantastic in the roll.

Yeah, that's good insurance. Sort of like what Tom Cruise did in "The Firm." Vowing to be like a "ship at sea, never reaching port," thus never revealing his mobster clients' secrets as long as he remained alive.
You should be writing this stuff. :)

Oh I don't know.
According to all the Law & Order shows, one of the first things the police do when investigating a suspicious death is check their voice mail....... ;)
Now me, I thought Pete kissing Chloe was a brilliant move. It forced a different secret to come out for Pete and he fell on his sword for Clark.
What a pal!

When Chloe got Lionel's confession, I thought she would say "It's on my voicemail, and if anything happens to me, my friend will hear it". Instead she basically said "Kill me now". The fact that Lionel was able to hack into her voicemail is the only thing that saved her life - for now.

I hope you're right. I was initially skeptical of the "Duke boy" playing this role, but he's been very good. Although Clark will at some point have to step out from under his shadow...

I think he's already doing that.
He's gone his own path this entire season.
The great, great story that's being told is Jonathan coming to terms with not being able to protect him anymore. That's really what's interested me the most this season.

This is one of the great things about this show. They have so many themes running through a season. You mention one that is very interesting but not as visible as the ones I find very interesting, say 1) Clark coming to grips with the consequences of keeping secrets, or 2) the dichotomy between Lionel and Jonathan as fathers and how this molds their sons.

Yep.
As a father I'm really feeling Jonathan's letting go because I know I'll have to do that one day. It's really some great work.

The real problem with voicemail is that it uses a 4-digit PIN code, which only provides 10,000 possible passwords. A man of Lionel Luthor's resources could likely get the password (as he did) in a matter of minutes.
She SHOULD have used the memo function on her phone (I have the same phone and it has this function) to record a hard copy of his confession...that might have been a little more foolproof...although she would have needed to get out of the hospital alive.

More importantly, what she COULD have done was gee, i dont know, CALLED LEX?

Do we have reason to believe that she even has his number? Even if she did, she didn't have time to call him and explain what she was going to do so he could her a recording.

I don't think speculation is spoiling. :)
Pa Kent died when Clark was young in the pre-Crisis comic continuity and in the Christopher Reeves movie.
In post-Crisis comic continuity, Pa Kent doesn't die.
My feeling is that they'll stick closer to the post-Crisis continuity on major issues for Smallville.
That aside, I think Whitney dealing with his "weakened" dad was foreshadowing. Johnathan is a very strong character in Clark's life and that's allowed him to not be as personally responsible as he might otherwise be. With Johnathan being more weakenedand needing some caring after, Clark's "super responsible" mode will develop more and Clark will be forced to grow into what we expect him to be. Killing Johnathan doesn't seem necessary and may actually be counterproductive to this end.
I'd also agree that Schneider is a major cast member and that'd be another reason not to kill him arbitrarily.
The Lex/Lionel situation, I'm less certain of. A part of me wants to see Lex kill him to grow into his role. In the least, there needs to be some opportunity for Lex to choose himself over Lionel. This episode's "I want him to love me" point was explicit enough to present a problem that has to be solved. Lex has already been scorned enough by romantic love. We need him next to give up family love altogether and pull the focus completely into egocentrism.

The whole gang knows each other, and Chloe and Lex have both contacted each other directly in the past. When you know the richest kid in town and you are regularly knee deep in trouble, you probably have Lex on your cell phone.
And if Lex got a phone call with his Dad's voice admitting the murder of his grandparents, i don't think Lex would need much previous explanation~

I can't remember if this was already speculated or not, but Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
what if Jonathan's deal with Jor El was to allow Jor El to take over Jonathan's body and become corporeal?

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly but I thought she dialed the number, Lionel came in, and it just happened to be voicemail that she was checking and she left a memo for herself?
I don't have it on TiVo anymore to double check.

Just watched this episode last night. I love the fact that every other day Chloe drives a really nice car but the day she gets attacked on the road she just happens to be driving an old POS Thunderbird.

Well, since Dad is unemployed maybe he sold her car to make ends meet?
The HR guy at the beginning did say "I thought I recognized your dad's car."
