Urgent - Upgrade how to get that vertical line?

Urgent help required. I am mid upgrade. All hardware reports ok. Booted to linux. Between the letters /dev/hdc and mfrestore is a vertical line detailed in the instruction sheet. I have tried using the AltGr and the key to the left of the 1 but nothing happens. Can I safely use the key to the left of the z which gives one vertical line above another?
