newbee, Wireless setup assistance

OK, this should be straight forward. I just got the Tivo S2 80 hour. The service number starts with 240 and based on the sites recommendations I picked up a Lynksys WUSB11 v2.8 wireless card. And I bought the HMO

To test the card, I hooked it up to both my desktop and a laptop machines and was able to get a connection to my AP (so I know the card works), but for some reason I'm not getting any luck with the TiVO. When I plug it in, none of the wireless options become available in the telephone & network settings section. In fact the link light status just stays a solid green and does not flicker to show activity.

I know this is supposed to be straight forward, but something is not working out here for me.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

thanks

You can only do Guided Setup via Wireless if you have SSID broadcast set to on, and no type of encryption running. You may have to enter the following into the Dialing Prefix ,#401 but that is usually only required for Wired network setup.

The above assumes this is a relatively new box made in the past two months or so which will ensure it came from the factory with 4.x software. If the date on the back of the TiVo is older then your only options for setup at this point is Wired network with the above Dialing Prefix or to use a telephone line.

Once you are up and running the phone line will not be needed and you can enabled encryption and SSID options on your router.

I've gone through the setup via an analoug phone line, so I am up and running fine with the basic TiVO service. I'm just having problems getting the wireless card recognised.

The Tivo software version is 4.x and I just bought the box from curcuit city on Friday. The wireless card was picked up yesterday from Staples.

As for wireless network, there is no security assisgned. The ssid is set to broadcast, the network name is the default for the AP and I am not using any encryption. This network couldn't be more open.

The problem is, it sounds like once the wireless card is connected to the Tivo, I should just be able to see the network settings options available in the setup. This isn't the case for me. When I go to that area I don't see any MAC identified (the headings aren't even being displayed) so it seems like the problem is with getting the Tivo to recognize the card.

Is there a way to force it or is this supposed to be simple plug and play?

Thanks

It should be Plug and Play. I set one up for my Sister-in-law a few weeks ago on a Series 2 80 hour unit using a 2.8 adapter. I simply plugged it in, and now had the Wireless Networking options.

Make sure you are fully plugging in the USB adaptor, and if possible try the other port. It really should be very simple since you do appear to have all the necessary components.

One other thing to check would be the number of connections your Router is assigning. For me, I have my number of connections limited to 12 and if a 13th device tries to connect it cannot.
