Hi, I have a hughes direct/tivo image. Can i use this image in a different hd and put it in my RCA hdvr40 reciever?

Don't do it. You need to have an RCA image in an RCA system

Is this only related to rca direct tivo's, or is this image from a different model.???
I have restored all of my Hughes SD-DVR40's off of one single backup image I created, but they are all the same exact model.

You can use the image from one TiVo on any other TiVo of the same make and model. You will need to do a Clear and Delete Everything to reset the serial number, but otherwise no problem.
Do NOT put a Sony image on a RCA, etc or a DSR7000 image on a DSR704, while an incorrect image may function on a mismatched box, it will attempt to download the correct software every time it dials into TiVo, but will be unable to install the software. This puts a big load on TiVo's servers and will cause Bad Things (tm) to happen.
This is a variant of "MORON" and "MORON II" activity, do a search for more info.

what about using an image created from a Hughes SD-DVR40 and using on a Hughes HDVR2? and vice versa
These are basically the same brand/model but bought at different times.

They are very different. You must make the models match.

Actually, the 'Moron' problem appears to have been fixed in the Series 2 DTiVoes. If you can't find the right backup, try the one you have and monitor your TiVoes behaviour.
It should download a software upgrade and then behave normally. If it downloads a software upgrade over and over, then you've got a problem.
