Deadwood - 4/25/04 - SPOILERS

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Beancounter25

I had to start a thread for the best show on television. Are people not watching this? If Deadwood gets cancelled, I might drop HBO. This is the best written show since....I don't know, the first season of NYPD Blue? Maybe that wasn't even as good. I love the stylized dialogue, love the characters, love the atmosphere. Just a fantastic piece of television. Last night's episode was particularly great - probably the best so far. If it keeps getting better, it may top my all-time list.

beats the hell out of The Sopranos

I agree. One of the best on TV right now.

I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see Bullock after McCall in this episode. I was really hoping for that. You'd think I personally knew Wild Bill, the way I was so angry at McCall. Although,

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
it looks like McCall may get what's coming to him next week!

Overall, a great episode. It was odd to see that group sitting around the table (Swearengen + the minister ?!)

Oh, and the line of the night:

"There better be a paying dwarf under there."

From what I understand, McCall doesn't get his from Bullock. He gets tried in a US court, found guilty, and hanged. This show has stuck pretty close to historical fact so far, don't see why they'd stop now. Bullock will reconsider and turn McCall in to the proper authorities.

Good episode. And no need to worry about Deadwood being canceled, it was already renewed for a second season!

I liked how EB (the innkeeper) thought the dope made the widow "randy." Compared to previous episodes, there wasn't a lot going on, yet the show never lost my attention. The pacing is very much like season 2 of the Wire, centering on character development and arcing the major plot points over several episodes.

Makes sense for Bullock's character. Generally I've stayed away from reading historical accounts of Deadwood so I can be surprised from week to week. The only thing I knew was going to happen was Wild Bill's murder, and they even managed to surprise me with that, putting it in so early!

When EB told Al that the widow was "randy", Al said "I hope you controlled yourself EB". And EB said "There was a CHILD in the room!".

Great dialogue in this show.

Al showed his "human" side too when talking to the whore, "You can stick to HJ's for a couple of days".

The characters on this show are phenomenal. Even Swearengen makes you think he is human every now and then. I loved his comment and wink to the preacher when the doctor was finished checking him out. :)

Oh, and it's no damn wonder the indians lost out to the white man. Rather than bash your head with a rock to finish you off they danced around like they just scored the winning touchdown at the Super Bowl! :D

Excellent episode! This has turned into the show I look forward to the most each week. This week was the first time I watched in HD, and I'm wondering why the heck I haven't been watching in HD every week. Great stuff.

Is it me or is that little girl getting more and more adorable every episode? I hope nothing happens to her.

And he really DID show his human side when he was dealing with the epileptic preacher...which surprised me, I didn't think he had it in him.

Anyone see the hand of the crew member during the indian's victory dance? There was a shot from about ground level just after Bullock got beat in the head the first time, and just inside the frame was the hand of a cre member holding a camera or something. Pretty obvious, and I'm surprised it got in. I'll check tonight for the exact frame/time.

I do love Deadwood, though. Al is one of my favorite TV characters, and I think the actor portraying him is brilliant.

Great show....great show.

Calamity Jane was hilarious, too. She was heading up to check on the little girl, EB said "be brief" and she responded "be f***ed !" LOL moment.

That was my favorite scene in this episode.

I like the show for the most part, but I can't stand Jane.

Posted by: Kylep

No way, the best comment was when the doctor made the comment to Jane about being on a binge, and she got all pissed, to which he replied "Don't take it personal, if you were a farmer I'd have asked about your farming" or something very similar.

That one just cracked me up.

I just don't get Jane. She's just too over the top for me I guess. Can't understand half of the things she says. And what is with Jane and EB always talking to themselves. Then there are people all around who don't even notice Jane walking around yelling.

My favorite line (although pretty terrible) was Cy to Joannie. He was stroking her face. "I want to touch you just like this. Don't make me do it another way." (or something like that)

Great show. Between this, the Sopranos, and Arrested Development, Sunday nights are our best night on TV... for as long as it lasts. :)

You got two out of three correct. ;)

Actually, he forgot The Simpsons, King of the Hill and Malcom in the Middle. All three he mentioned are great as well.

I love Jane! Great character!

This show really has me hooked! I really enjoyed seeing how they met and discussed how to deal with the small pox epidemic. Great show!

Posted by: pmyers

I thought the scene gathered around the typeset with each of them giving their "editorial spin" was great!

That was easily my favorite line also. I replayed it 3 or 4 times. :) I love Jane's character. I think her deal is that she wants to 'hang with the guys' and tries to be as much of a tomboy as possible.

I agree that Deadwood is the best show on television. Better than any season of the Sopranos. I love movies like 'The Unforgiven' and 'Open Range'. So, this show is right up my alley.

Hearing about it being in HD makes me want to take the plunge and get my first HDTV. I can't wait for the seasons to come to DVD.

Yeah, in addition to being very funny, there was some really good character development in that scene and in the meeting in the saloon. I loved the whole gratis vs. free thing.

I also liked that later in the episode, the idea of an entrepreneuring Cy buying the "Chinamen's alley" land was eating at Al, and he ended it with saying something like, "But there's no better base of operations than a saloon."

It's based on fact, but obviously strays from it.

Calamity Jane was a "working girl" and also was a madame for a while during her time in Dedwood, and she was a frequent visitor of the Gem.

Bullock was only in camp one day when Hickock was killed, so I doubt that they established any kind of real relationship. We should see Bullock becoming the law in Deadwood pretty soon as it was Hickock's killing that spurred him into being the law in Deadwood (after convincing Wyatt Earp that the job filled).

I know it's kind of silly to ask you to put historical facts into spoilers, but it would be nice if you did, for those of us uniformed folk who want to be surprised by future developments in the show. Thanks.

Awesome. :D

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The Indians eventually get wiped out. Deadwood becomes part of the U.S.. Just about everybody that ever visited Deadwood in this period has died by 2004. The Germans lost WWII.

Posted by: pmyers

don't be a jerk. It's a perfectly reasonable request and the history of Deadwood isn't exactly as widely known as WWII

After episode #2 aired HBO picked up the order for 13 more episodes for season 2.

Oh, and my vote is that I love Jane! She cracks me up.

It's visiable at around the 3:01 mark.

It was the very tip of a boom mic.

Posted by: Bradc314

Did anyone see Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane) last night on NYPD Blue? I kept expecting to hear her spew a bunch of Jane's favorite words.

Posted by: desulliv

Yeah. As I posted in the NYPD thread, once I heard her voice, she was Jane all the way for the rest of the hour.

Posted by: cheesesteak

Jane's my new tv girlfriend.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

I laugh every time I think about Jane. The first thing that comes to mind is: "Be f***ed!"

Posted by: pmyers

I'm just waiting for somebody to tell me to "Be XXXXXXXX", so I can use that line ;)

Posted by: Tracy

I had all the episodes piled up on my Tivo waiting to be watched and once I started, I couldn't stop. What a great show! All of the characters seem so fully developed and their dialogue is great. I was sorry to see Wild Bill go, although that bit of history I did know. I love seeing the relationship between Trixie and the widow develop.

Posted by: davidmin

Jane is a little over the top, but she is a lot like some of the women I knew when I lived in Nevada. Some even talk like that. Her mood swings are hilarious and well-acted. Today she'd be a biker chick.
