Need to backup?

I have searched this forum and did not find an exact answer to my question. So, I was wondering if I have a single drive unit (Tivo 40hr standalone) and am upgrading it by adding two Seagate 80Gb drives to it do I still need to do a backup? If I am taking out the original Tivo drive then can't I just keep it in a safe place and that is my backup? If I decided to put the original Tivo drive (the one thats in it right now) back in the Tivo a year from now (say I want to sell the unit as original or something) wouldn't it still work? Or do I need to backup something also on my desktop computer? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you will be replacing your drive, not adding -- you can't ADD two drives, but what you are suggesting doing is replacing and putting your old drive on a shelf. In that case, your old drive IS your backup.

If you are completing the upgrade yourself, you'll need to get an image from somewhere - presumably, you will then be backing up your primary drive to some place, perhaps your desktop system. Of course, you can copy your primary drive onto your two new drives, but be careful not to mess it up. In any case, all of that is very well documented here...

You mean the messes are well documented.... how very true! Sorry I couldn't resist as you left yourself wide open for that one.

One of the key things I do remember about upgrading is ensure the disconnection of all windows drives when you play with linux :) You will thank yourself for keeping the original tivo drive in the packing that came with your new hard drives because I can almost guarantee a crash some day if you have this long enough.

Tivo really needs to consider our true backup needs.

Don't know if I agree with any of those points, but you are entitled to your opinions, of course!
