I just upgraded my rca dvr-40 with 120 westerndigital ab 5400rpm drive as a second drive. The thing whines louder than my kids all day long. I want to replace it with this drive since it rated as very quiet.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-152-005&depa=0

can and how do I replace the western digital with the samsung drive, and keep my recordings, can I just do a drive copy since they are the same size, or is it more complicated than that?

thanks

dave

Yes, you'd just use dd to copy the data across, then the two drives should be identical.

This won't work if the new drive is even a single block smaller than the WD, so check that and buy a 160Gb drive if necessary.

What is dd?

It's a tool that happens to be well-suited to copying hard drives. It's covered in Hinsdale.

Just for the record, I have two of these Samsung drives -SP1203N. I can't believe how quite this thing is. Also, 3 year warranty can't be beat for this price.

Not sure why it says 1 year on their website (newegg) These have a 3 year mfg warranty.

I have a Samsung SV1204H 120GB and WD1200JB 120GB, the WD drive is larger so be careful. I am not sure what models you are dealing with, but as Robert stated you need to make sure you are copying your WD to a drive at least as large.
