Max range of UTP Ethernet cable from switch to TurboNet?

I can connect successfully with TurboNet again, which is great.

I had an electrician run UTP cable from my TV area to my office, a span of about 60 feet. I tested the cable with my laptop and the run is fine.

The problem is that TurboNet doesn't like it. I can move Tivo close to the switch using a 10' cable and all is well. The new run however doesn't work and I have successfully tested it with a Windows XP laptop.

What should I know about this? I thought Ethernet was good to 100 meters or so. There is little if any interference in the inside walls that I know of.

Please help me. I'll buy a CacheCard if it has a longer reach, but I want to be sure.

Just to clarify, "UTP" = Cat5? Cat5e, Cat6 [data grades], Cat3 [phone grade], etc, since it come in many grades. And you're right, Ethernet (10, 100, 1000M) is rated to 100M assuming good wiring and connectors.

The router is a Linksys 4-port internet router. Is this a limiting factor as well?

I added a 5-port 10MBS Linksys hub then ran a short cable from the hub to the Tivo. I get an OK connection now. I can ping and get a response 2 out of 4 pings which seems to be good enough to complete the ethernet connection but is pretty slow.

What do you think?
