What's the best SNL sketch ever?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

I've been battling insomnia by watching old SNL tapes, and it dawns on me...

The Chris Farley/Patrick Swayze Chippendales' audition sketch has to be one of the funniest things that's come out of that show.

Or the Motivational Man Farley episodes. I can't decide.

Posted by: appleye1

You're definitely too young! ;) My favorites are John Belushi's Samurai Delicatessen, Dan Akroyd's "bag o' glass", the Jaws Christmas Tree (candygram...), and Eddie Murphy's Gumby.

One of my all-time favorites though, that you might remember, is Alex Baldwin's Christmas special "Schweaty Balls"! That might be the best SNL skit ever!

Posted by: keithcarl

My vote goes to Jim Carey as a lifegaurd while Will Ferrell is in the kiddie pool.

Posted by: PKurmas

How do you pick just one?

Any Samurai sketch, though I agree the Delicatessen was probably the best.
John Belushi's rant on spring coming in like a lion & going out like a lamb...
John Belushi's rant on Skylab's reentry...
Any of Eddie Murphy's "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood"...

If you include the ads...
Dan Ackroyd's "Bass-o-matic" (for the gross factor)...
Shimmer floor wax & dessert topping...
Phil Hartman's "Colon Blow" cereal ad...
Eddie Murphy's "Buckwheat Sings the Classics" album...
But the best of all... "Happy Fun Ball"... I always keep a link to one of the websites quoting the script in case I need a laugh.

Boy, do I feel old now... I remember staying up past my bedtime when I was 10 watching Chevy Chase's weekend update... and Garrett Morris' service for the hearing impared...

(Edit: Phil Hartman, you dolt  ... Phil Jackson is a basketball coach.)

Chris Farley/Adam Sandler "Shmitz Gay" beer ad

David Spade's Hollywood Minute

Chevy Chase's/Jane Curtain point-counterpoint ("Jane you ignorant slut")

Posted by: Mikkel_Knight

Chevy Chase/Richard Prior Janitor interview process. I believe it was the first time "nigger" was used on network television. Created quite a stir...

Posted by: GoodSpike

Steve Martin's "King Tut."

I also liked the Scotch Tape Store and the Change Bank (similar themes).

Posted by: sbourgeo

The "Earl of Sandwich" sketch. I haven't seen it on tv in years:

Give me a Sandwich and a ... ;)

Steve

Posted by: serumgard

I vote for the Celebrity Jeopardy ones, the Michael Jordan/Stuart Smalley sketch where Jordan was just seconds away from losing it on screen, and the Dan Akroyd (sp?) skits where he was defending the dangerous toys.

Posted by: Skittles

Celebrity Jeopardy sketches always had me in stitches... particularly Sean Connery. It was one of the few recurring Will Ferrell bits I found funny.

Posted by: rich

You like-a da juice, huh? Juice is good, huh?

Cheeboygee, cheeboygee, cheeboygee, chip, chip, Pepsi!

Could it be ..... Satan?

Yeah, that's the ticket.

Posted by: Beancounter25

I loved a sketch they did with Jon Lovitz once, where he was on a game show where they hooked you up to a wedgie machine, and if you didn't get the question right, they would hoist your underwear higher and higher. Well of course Lovitz gets up there and WANTS the wedgie. His category is state capitals, and every capital they name, he answers Oklahoma. Finally they say Tulsa, he responds Oklahoma, and then tries to backtrack when he finds out it's right.

"OOOOOOOklahoma!!!"

Long description, classic sketch.

Candygram!

We are two wild and crazy guys!

"Acting!" "Genius!"

Tales of Ribaldry

"Get off the damn shed!"

Posted by: quarkman97

Anything with Steve Martin...that man is a comic genius!

My picks:

Toonces the driving cat.

Will Ferrell OBGYN.

Chris Farley motivational speaker.

Jeopardy skits.

I'm a big fan of the commercials they've done: Oops, I crapped my pants, cookie dough gatorade, three legged jeans, chamelon car, and the infinity toilet.

More cowbell!!

Posted by: rich

Not!

You may touch my monkey. And now it is the time on Sprockets when we dance.

Posted by: mrpurple

Kill Larry the Lobster. I always like Operaman too.

For a classic the one where Belushi is interviewede about drug use at Studio 54.

Posted by: SparkleMotion

It only ever aired ONCE (the live show) and was never repeated and isn't in syndication...

But the PENIS sketch was a riot!

"Hey Bob, penis is looking good."

"Yours, too, Ted."

They said the P word about 100 times in 3 or 4 minutes and it was never dirty, just funny.

Posted by: Gunnyman2k3

Canteen Boy
And from the original cast,
Meet Ellen Sherman, Cleveland Housewife and Mother.

Also Puppy Uppers and Doggie Downers.
Emily Latella
The Buckwheat death.
Brad and Lisa

Way too many to count from the Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers years.

YOU feel old, I was watching them live, much older than 10.

I'm laughing just reading this post.

*Generalisimo Franco is STILL dead.

*AND NOW THE NEWS FOR THE DEAF!!!!!!!!

*Killer Bees

*Candy Gram/all Land Shark skits

*Clang, clang, clang went the trolley...

However, my all time laugh out loud moment on SNL was with guest host Elliott Gould and the attacking lobsters. IIRC, most of the show had the lobsters attacking NY and it showed lobsters crawling up the Empire State Building. It tickled my funny bone in a way that few other skits have.

Does anyone else use SNL catch phrases in daily life? Our favorite is used often with my 16 years old son (who overacts quite frequently). He'll be going on for a bit and my husband and I will look at each other and say, . ."Acting"!!! "Thank You"!!!

I saw that on Comedy Central just a couple of years ago. It may not be airing now, but it's aired more than the one time.

Swayze/Farley as Chippendales Dancers.

Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy as Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder doing their own version of "Ebony and Ivory".

Celebrity Jeopardy. Matthew Perry as Micheal Keaton was hilarious! His answer for Final Jeopardy - "Val Kilmer sucks". His wager - "George Clooney sucks".

The screen tests for "Pulp Fiction" when Sam Jackson hosted.

How about Julia Childs, Dennis Milller's Weekend Update, the Anal-retentive Chef, and another vote for Garrett Morris' News for the Deaf.

Cheerleaders were greatness. Mary Katherine Galleger was a trainwreck at times but still made me laugh everytime she lost it and fell back on a table or whatever with her feet all up in the air.

good stuff.

Posted by: ThomasDrew

Oh jeez...there are sooo many.

For me though, it's got to be Phil Hartman doing Frank Sinatra recording duets with the likes of (imitation) Bono, Liza Minelli, Bruce Springsteen....

Posted by: frankmint

I am a fan of the old stuff as well, however, the funniest bit ever was:

"lock box": the Gore/Bush debates.

Posted by: Beancounter25

Man, how could we forget "The Sinatra Group"?

"I got chunks of guys like you in my stool."

"Hey Cueball"

"It's all pops and fizzles over here."

And 20 other great lines.

ALL the time. In fact, one of the sketches I forgot about that someone mentioned-"Happy Fun Ball", and more often, the "Colon Blow" sketches get a lot of airtime in my circle of friends. In fact, "Colon Blow" was a sketch when we were all in college, and we renamed all of the cafeteria foods in honor of Colon Blow. And "Van, down by the river" still gets said a lot.

"Do Not Taunt Happy Fun Ball."

Ah. Anyone else ever get the feeling that SNL is one of those shows that's funnier when you're talking about them and thinking about them later?

Edit: How could I forget Farley's "You remember when you did X? Yeah, that was awesome!" celebrity interviews!

I always loved Dana Carvey as Ross Perot. Currently I love "Wake Up, Wakefield".

Actually, that was one of the Lisa Loopner and Todd sketches. Mrs. Loopner's Frigidaire needed attention, as I recall... :)

Little Chocolate Donuts
(Breakfast of Champions!)

Roseanne Rosannadanna

The Gumby Christmas Special
(To this day, I can't hear "Blue Christmas" without cracking up)

But one of my all time favorites has to be from the Heather Locklear show - the one with the infomercial for the pasta machine...

I enjoy "Your Company's Computer Guy"

Also Al Franken as the remote reporter with the big satellite dish strapped to his head.

Posted by: crowfan

Wasn't the pudding thing from "In Living Color"?

One of my favorites is recent. I think it was the first show after 9/11. It's the skit where Will Ferrell comes into the meeting and is wearing his patriotic speedo. That was absolutely hysterical.

I was also reminiscing about a sketch with someone, I don't remember who, and Sting in an elevator which made me laugh hard for several weeks.

That would be Kevin Nealon screeching "Rooooooxanne!" over and over with Sting trapped next to him in the elevator. Good times!

I always liked the People's Court sketch where Lovitz plays the Devil ("I'm the Devil, when I decide to harass you you'll know it!"). Jan Hooks ("I'm a bar fly, your honor") was hilarious.

Posted by: David Platt

One I can't believe hasn't been mentioned yet:

The Stevie Wonder (Eddie Murphy)/Frank Sinatra (Joe Piscopo) duet on 'Ebony & Ivory'.

"You are black, and I am white; you are blind as a bat, and I have sight. Side by side on my piany keyboard, negro, let's not fiiiiiight."

The thing on SNL that made me truly roll on the floor laughing was Eddie Murphy's poem in the short film "Prose and Cons". The poem was "Cill My Landlord".

This is from the first season with Billy Crystal and, I think, Christopher Guest made up as two old veterans of the Negro baseball league reminiscing about 1) Smelt Night - it smelled so bad on Smelt Night that the pitcher would throw nothing but fastballs to get the game over as fast as possible and 2) a player so fast that when he hit a line drive up the middle he'd hit himself with the ball as he was rounding second base.

It was classic SNL and was a great skit that I wish I had on tape. Much funnier than I can do it justice.

I agree, that Alec Baldwin skit is one of the best.

"With a name like 'Fluckers', it's got to be good jam!. With a name like 'Painful rectal itch', it's got to be good jam. '10,000 nuns and orphans'. What's so good about that? They were all eaten by rats!'.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned when they did a spoof on Dallas as the opening skit ("Who shot JR?"), and they "shot" Charles Rocket.. and as he rolled over, he said "WHO THE FU*K SHOT ME" on live TV. Classic.

I also liked Steve Martin's "Penis Cream" sketch. Another one where they said the work "penis" about 50 times.

"The Pepsi Syndrome" was great. The very next week, I was in high-school electronics class building electric motors, and my motor was running faster than everyone else's. So much, in fact that the top electromagnet was overheating and started to catch fire... we needed to cool it down. Yup - you guessed it - the only thing nearby was a can of Pepsi. I had my own little "Pepsi Syndrome".

Finally, I think this only aired once in the late 70's, but it was one of those "independent" short films. It was a film director composing a street scene in a city - telling the actors to move left, move right.. After not getting the shot he wanted, he noticed a very tall building in the far background. He says "get rid of that building - it's messing up the lighting (or something like that), and at that point, the building is imploded and falls down entirely out of view. "Perfect".

And all the others you have all mentioned are classic. Even if you composed a list of the "top 100" there would still be another 100 worthy of the list.

I like the one with little kids complaining about how commercialized Christmas has become. Especially when the little says "you know who I hate, Perry Cuomo."

Does anyone remember the sketches with Martin Short? It was probably around 1984 or 1985. What a brilliant sketch comic! He used to do a spoof of Kate and Allie, the 80's sitcom - with him as Katharine hepburn, and someone else (I don't remember) as Muhammed Ali. Also, he played a weird child-man with a tall alfalfa-like cone of hair. I was a kid at the time, and I thought it was hilarious, but I can't remember the name of the character. Does anyone else?

Also, Toonces the cat who could drive a car - over a cliff in every sketch.

I would agree with many that I've seen posted. But two real classics I haven't seen mentioned yet.

First the reoccuring sketches with Chevy Chase playing Gerald Ford. Those were just hilarious at the time but probably don't hold up too well now since most people barely remember Ford.

But my favorite of all time was when Joe Cocker was the musical guest. Cocker just gets started singing and Belushi comes out and starts mimicing him while he's singing. It look unrehearsed but who knows. Either way, I was rolling on the floor at that one.

The spoof of the kids educational show where the letters U C K are on sweatshirts and something educational is being taught is a fav of mine. Wil Ferrel comes through the door as the F and tries to get first in line. I can't remember the specifics other than they are moving about like a choo choo train trying to keep Wil out of that position and a fight ensues, but it was funny.

I also like the old skit where Dan Ackroyd plays Julia Child who cuts herself during a cooking show.

The fake commercial where a bank gives change as its only business and customers give testimonials as to how great the service is.

Around 1975 there was a fake commercial with a triple track razor, making fun of the recent advertising gimmick with a razor with two blades where the second blade cuts the whisker the first blade only bent. With the fake commercial the third blade cuts it off beneath the skin. Now there really is a three blade razor, maybe even four blade razors so that one couldn't be funny today.

The recent segments with Darrell Hammond impersonations are among my all time favorite skits. He does so many political figures and does most so well. His impersonation of Dick Cheney last night was great.

The segment last night of the Debbie Downer TV show was totally screwed up, with Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon and the lovely young hostess whoever she is all laughing when they shouldn't and mucking up their lines really bad. That was the worst job of performing a skit I have ever seen on that show. Because it was so screwed up, it was funny. Thank god they don't screw them up bad very often, or it wouldn't be funny, just amateurish. I laughed at the ineptness last night or I should say this morning when playing it on my TiVo.

Chris

Posted by: Chris Gerhard

Oh ya, the fun with real audio cartoon of the Tom Snyder interview of Dolly Parton was great. Tom was completely inept during the interview with inane questions while Dolly Parton was a very good sport. With the cartoon he was following her home and sneaking into her house and following her around and into the bathroom while asking the stupid questions.

Chris

Posted by: midas

They did another fake bank commercial with Roseanne as the guest star. It was a take off of, I believe, an American Express commercial running at the time. Basically they had a customer saying, "I called them up at 3am because my credit card was stolen." And then they show Roseanne saying, "So this idiot calls me crying that he needs a new credit card at 3 in the morning. Like I'm the credit card fairy or something."

Excellent bit.

Posted by: brianric

I was home on Navy leave at my sister’s house in the 1970ies when I watched what I thought was a commercial for one of those racing cars set. One of the cars goes off the track and burst into flames. I said to my sister “What the hell kind of toy is that to give to a kid? He’ll burn the damn house down”. I realized I was had when the Meat wagon came out to recover the dead bodies.

OMG - I totally forgot about that one. It was "Jingleheimer Junction". I have it on tape here somewhere. I couldn't stop lauching at that one, I had to pause it just to be able to start breathing again. And IIRC, it was F-C-K, and Hortiao Sanz comes out as "U" for "Unity". The other members were "Friendship", "Caring", and "Kindness".

That one was so unintentionally funny I gave it its own thread! I think the goofups made it funnier than it would have been had they done it right.

The Harry Potter skit, which also has its own thread , ought to be considered for a top 250, if not a top 100, spot.

It was a one-note sketch (like so many of them are), but I always seemed to enjoy that one.

The other members were "Friendship", "Caring", and "Kindness".

I distinctly remember Wil Ferrell coming through the door with the F but not much more. The letters are as you recall. I laughed harder at that one than probably any other but I haven't seen it again. If you can remember the host that night, I would like to try to catch it on my TiVo.

Saturday Night Live has been a great show and the talented people who have made it a success for almost 30 years are to be commended. It is also a great show for TiVo since it is so easy to skip over the duds which are frequent. The writers and performers are amazing even though half the shows aren't any good, the ones that are, make up for it.

And then they show Roseanne saying, "So this idiot calls me crying that he needs a new credit card at 3 in the morning. Like I'm the credit card fairy or something."

Excellent bit.

You're right - it was Will Farrell (according to this site: http://members.aol.com/MLanza1974/ferrell/wf5.htm ).

Date: 9/26/98 Host: Cameron Diaz

I think this link will work for the video:

Or maybe this one:

This is why I never give up on the show. No matter how bad it gets, it comes back, and even bad seasons have the occasional brilliant sketch.

My favorites are when the guest star allows him/herself to be ridiculed in a sketch. I glanced through the thread pretty quickly, but didnt see these mentioned.

My favorite was George Steinbrenner running a convenience store.

"I cant just fire people for making some mistakes. What kind of person would that make me? What if I fired him and made you manager, then I fired you and maybe hired him back? Thats NO WAY to run a bussiness!"

I was also pretty impressed when Al Gore let himself be skewered in several sketches when he was on. I loved when he was playing make-believe President on the West Wing set and creeping out the actors.

Henry, thanks for the link. I am going to play it right away since I haven't seen it in so long.

While I am waiting on Jingleheimer Junction to download.

The John Belushi skit where he is Captain Kirk on the Star Trek set and the show has been canceled so they are carrying away the set pieces while he his barking out orders like Captain Kirk did. He couldn't accept their mission had been canceled.

John Belushi playing a fat Elizabeth Taylor eating fried chicken and choking on a chicken bone during an interview was good as well.

Aw, man. I'd forgotten about so many of these old sketches. You guys have such great memory!

Posted by: muggum

* Adam Sandler doing Halloween Costumes... 'I'm crazy protractor beard! Gimme some of that candy.'

* Tom Hanks and Jon Lovitz as two losers trying to pick up women... 'I have a low paying job with no hope of social advancement...'

* Any Chris-Farley-interviews-a-celebrity segment.

* Will Ferrell in the jacuzzi, talking about taking a 'lovah...'

* Cowbell.

* The Change-Bank Commercial. 'We're not gonna give you two thousand nickels.'

* Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey doing Dukakis and Bush. Lovitz: 'My parents were little people. Little SWARTHY people.' Bush goes on and on, making no sense. Cut to Lovitz: 'I can't believe I'm losing to this guy.'

And yeah, Roseanne and Phil Hartman doing the credit card ad. He tries to fake a British accent. Roseanne: 'I know it's you!'

So many laughs!

Muggum

How about that skit about 6 months before the 1992 election - the Democratic debate titled "Who'se going to be the guy who will lose to Bush?". They had Clinton as a stoner, and Ross Perot as one of the little people from The Wizard of Oz. I forget the rest, but the skit was hilarious.

While not the best ever, this weekends skit of Harry Potter, where what's her name came back from summer vacation with big boobs was pretty darn funny.

That my friend was from MTV's "The State"

Geez, this thread definitely shows the ages of the posters. That makes it difficult to choose the best sketch!

I've found SNL unfunny since around the time Phil Hartman died, and as a result, I'm not familiar with them these days.

Someone mentioned the Charles Rocket F*CK incident... while classic and certainly historic, NOTHING was funny about it. That's the incident that almost single-handedly got SNL cancelled. At least Eddie Murphy & Joe Piscopo were there to pick up the pieces.

A few of my favorites:

* The aforementioned Star Trek sketch with Belushi as Shatner. Up until taping, the cast wasn't sure Belushi would pull it off, but he did it with flying colors. Poor Nimoy lost his ears.

* Donuts... little chocolate donuts.

* You can pick your friends, and you can pick your friends' noses... but you can NOT pick your friends nose!

* Jane, you ignorant slut.

* Here's one I remember from is original airing and for SOME reason, it hasn't aired since (ok, I know exactly why it hasn't aired since). It was an ad voiced over by Don Pardo at the end of a newscast. It was a takeoff on the Krugerand gold coin ads of the early 80s. They called it the Niggerand. I VIVIDLY remember being appalled at it, and my brother laughing his ass off. Does anyone but me remember it?

* James... Brown's... Hot Tub... Party! Should I get in the hot tub? (yeah!) Gon' make me sweat? (yeah!) Get in the hot tub? (yeah!) WELL, well, well!

Greg

It was amazing to me Eddie Murphy could make that so funny. He was the best at taking marginal skits and making them great. That would have to be in my top ten but without his silly interpretation of a great artist, it wouldn't have gotten even a laugh from me.

I liked Martin Short as Nathan Thurm, the chain-smoking lawyer who constantly denied everything and tried to turn every question back on the questioner. ("I never said that, why are you asking me that?")

I always liked Ana Gasteyer with her Public Radio show ("good times ... good times.")

Posted by: Bradc314

I really liked John McCain singing Barbara Striesand.

"Do I know how to sing? About as much as Barbara knows how to govern a country!"

Posted by: henryhank

The Will Farrell/Janet Reno sketches were great - especially the one where she showed up! "Janet Reno's 80's Dance Party!".

OH MAN! I loved that sketch. We used to do that one all the time when I was in college. "I'm crazy Heineken bottle cap eye. Gimme some candy!"

Here's something interesting, sorta: I stopped watching SNL in 1996, when I moved to Salt Lake City because, at least at the time, they didn't show it on the NBC affiliate there. Haven't really watched it since, even though I moved back to places where they do show it. I always thought it was odd-I mean, I know it's a Mormon affiliated station, but compared to a lot of other things on TV, particularly that late, and they still choose to pre-empt it.

Some favorites:

Belushi: Samurai Optometrist

Commercial: Sludge (mineral water from Lake Erie, soundtrack plays "Anticipation" as it pours out)

Wayne's World -- guest star Madonna -- "We're not worthy!" (Aerosmith one is my second fave)

Mike Meyers doing his coffee klatsch show and the girls are talking about Barbra Streisand -- and then Babs actually shows up -- a great moment

Loved Al Gore playing the other politician during the talk-show skit. The West Wing set piece was hysterical, too.

Most fun moment on 3rd Rock from the Sun: when Jane Curtin's character and Dick Soloman are cruising the dealer's room at the science fiction convention and some fans dressed as Coneheads walk past. Her reaction is priceless. I wonder if they did it as a surprise. ;)

Ah yes.. you mean "Swill". ;)

And we can't forget "Shimmer". It's a floor wax.. no, it's a dessert topping. It's BOTH.

"Spud...The Beer That Made Boise Famous".

Just put your mind on hold...and open a cold, refreshing Spud! Oooooh, Spud!

It's amazing the stuff that gets stuck in the back of your head after all these years...

Does anyone remember this skit that made me realize that Steve Martin and Bill Murray were the two funniest people on the planet?:

Bill Murray and Steve Martin shuffle out on stage looking like homeless people. They stare into the distance as if they're looking at something and one says: "What the hell is dat ting?" They continue to stare into the distance, and finally the other one replies: "oh, I know what it is ... it's a .... what the hell *is* dat ting?" Repeat and rinse with only slight variations for a good 5 minutes.

On paper, it doesn't sound even the least bit funny, but in their hands, it was absolutely hilarious.

"It'll behoove ya, to care for your uvula."

We also forgot "Two Wild and Crazy Guys".

I do remember that and thought it was very funny at the time. Steve Martin and Bill Murray both have had hit and miss film careers but considering what I thought of them at first, they have both become very successful. I thought that Dan Ackroyd would have the best career at that time early on but his career has been mostly miss with a few hits.

Chris

Posted by: gchance

Dan Ackroyd's career was so closely linked with John Belushi that after John died, Dan's sort of faded away. The same thing is happening with David Spade.

I agree with Martin Short's Nathan Thurm character. I have friends who still use the phrase, " is it me? it's him, right?....."

Also, when they did their takeoff on $ 10K Pyramid

"it's like the pyramid, but different"
Billy Crystal was Sammy Davis, Jr and Christopher Guest as his gay Arab character.

Billy, trying to get him to answer filet mignon, " it's like the ultimate hunk of meat", Guest answers, " Mel Gibson"......................still kills me.

Was it Bill Murray and Steve Martin who did the sketch where caveman Ogg, the stronger one, killed the smarter one, ending with "Ogg strong. And now Ogg smart too."

And don't forget Emily Litella: what's all this fuss about... endangered feces? ...conserving natural racehorses?

I'm suprised at no mention of any of Billy Crystal's "Fernando's Hideaway" sketches!! The best one was with Mr. T, Billy had T giggling like a schoolgirl!!

"You rook mahvelous!! and everybody knows it is better to look good than to feel good!"

I miss Gilda. :(

I would have mentioned her earlier, but there are so many good skits, it's so hard to pick out just one.
