SaturdayNiteLive 5/1/04 SPOILERS!

MASSIVE meltdown during the "Debby Downer" skit (immediately following Weekend Update). Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz's inability to keep a straight face infected everybody in the skit. Funny as hell.

Posted by: RegBarc

I think the meltdowns can be great and just add to the hilarity of it all. The only thing I hope they keep in mind is not to do it too much. Will Ferrel and Rachel Dratch melting down during the lovers sequence at the Welsley Arms motel was great, but sometimes the skit is not funny, so them laughing just makes me hate it more.

EDIT: Just saw the skit. Absolutely Hilarious. I almost cried like Horatio.

"It's official...I can't have children."

Lindsay Lohan as Hermione -- :o

"daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me" ..... yoink.

Posted by: Smiles

I was totally cracking up.

Posted by: SparkleMotion

I had to go to work, so as soon as I saw that Rachel was about to go off, I froze it.

Can't wait to finish it off.

Thanks for the tip! I often watch SNL these days simply for the opener. If I hadn't seen this thread I might have missed the episode entirely.

The "Debbie Downer" skit was hysterical, but I was especially glad not to miss the HP sendup.

Favorite line (so far):

"I'm George Dubya Bush, and I approve this muffin."

Riot! :)

That was funny, he's no Will Ferrel, but it was still funny.

Debbie downer, the monolog and the Harry potter sketch where really funny.

"I have to take care of a dragon" "Oh, did you get a new pet?" "No!"

"So, Hillary Duff, when do you turn 18?" "never" (Oh, so true.)

" I lived through your Cat-Aids speach, but, ive had enough!"

Posted by: SparkleMotion

He actually said "I have to tame my dragon."

That was so freaking funny. Especially given the theme of the skit.
The first time she busted up during the tight closeup we about fell out of the chair.

We've gotten really tired of Jimmy and Horatio constantly giggling, but this was like the old Carole Burnett crackups.

Speaking of Fallon & Sanz, they made it through the Weekend Update G.E.D. bit pretty well intact. I laughed out loud two or three times during that one.

While I did think the cracking up was pretty funny on the Debbie Downer skit, I'm getting pretty sick of them "loosing it" in just about every skit. It gets old real quick.

Surprised nobody's mentioned my favorite sketch of the evening-- the 'sleepover.' Looks like Amy Poehler might have a new recurring character! ;)

Posted by: porges

The sleepover sketch put me very much in mind of Gilda Radner, but I didn't mind. Amy Pohler's talent is her own.

Posted by: AJRitz

I was thinking the same thing porges! It was like Amy Pohler was channeling Gilda's Judy Miller character - and paying it proper homage, but not abusing it.

edited to correct the name of Gilda's character - thanks scooterboy

I ff'ed through that sleepover skit. It was bad, IMO.

The Downer Debbie and the Potter skit were big hits though.

Yeah, I find that most skits are a lot worse when I ff through them. The characters never say anything and just seem to jump around a lot. Wonder why that is...

[nitpick]
AJRitz: Gilda's character was Judy Miller, not Judy Davis.
[/nitpick]

Posted by: scooterboy

Another thought in the Gilda comparison - the point of Gilda's JM skit was that she was always alone in her room with only her imagination to keep herself entertained with. Poeller's skit was quite the opposite.

If it's not funny after the first minute I assume the next 6 minutes are going to be the same.

Are there any new writers at SNL? They are actually starting to mix in a few good episodes once in awhile....

I agree. There has been quite a few good episodes this year. Of course, there have been some good hosts too: Trump, Afleck, Sharpton, etc.

My whole point was that Poehler's sleepover character had the energy and attitude of Judy Miller, but was still an unique character. She was still living in something of a fantasy world in her head. Unlike Judy, she wasn't stuck alone in her room - but her world (including her stepdad and her "friend" and the indoor swimming pool) is just as much in her head as Judy's world was. The more I think about it, the more I think there was a bit of Lisa Loopner in Poehler's character too.

I LOVED the Avril Levigne character in the opening... I can't stand that chick -- she sings teen pop music and acts like she's the biggest heavy metal bada$$ ever to walk the earth...

Oh man, the ricky one was kinda crazy.
