Another good episode. Looks like Bullock and Swearenger are going to go at it now.

I'm loving this show. Bullock definitely lined himself up to keep Swearengen in line.
I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see much more of Jane last nite. She just cracks me up most of the time, but even when not, she's a fascinating character.
Going into the season, I was worried that HBO wasn't gonna come up with something new for me to like (with Sex and the city retiring, the Sopranos ending soon, and other old favorites gone already). I wanted to get interested in K Street, but it was just bad. And Carnivale did nothing for me. At least Deadwood has been a hit in my book and given me reason (besides the Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Curb Your Enthusiasm) to tune in.

I agree that it was another good show. It was nice to see Jane sober. Her character is shaping up nicely. I like the subplot with Trixie. Not sure where it is going but I like it. Plus the brother and sister should make for an interesting addition to Deadwood. I love Bullock and Swearenger’s talk. I think we are building to some very good battles.

I don't think they really can, because if they do, the show pretty much ends.
I think they have to be in a state of permanent cold-war style conflict. Like if Bullock were the sheriff...

This is now one of our favorite shows, and might be our favorite drama second only to the Sopranos. We certainly look forward to it every week now! (And it's worth watching live to see in high def... gorgeous show, even with all the brown.)

One of the things that makes this show great is that, by trying to stick fairly close to history, they constrain themselves from going off on weird tangents. We know, for the most part, how things will end up. We know the town grows, and those of us who have done a little research know what happens to Bullock, Star, Swearengen, Farmer, Jane, etc. By not being distracted with trying to figure out where things are going, we can relax and enjoy the ride. And what a ride it is!
Contrast that to the Sopranos, which dangles the prospect of the death of a major character over our heads seemingly every week, and then we get disappointed when it doesn't pay off. Whatever happened to just telling a story and telling it well? Why do you have to try to string us along with unfulfilled promises, hoping for the big conclusion when all will be set right? This was the fundamental flaw of the X-Files, which for its first several seasons was a wonderful show, but fell into a rut by being unable to bring a proper to conclusion to any of the myriad plot threads.

And you've got to love her bedside manner, "Here's a wet towel for your f@&*ing mouth."

As to be expected, we are experiencing significant time compression. Last night we weathered the smallpox epidemic which was actually some two years after Hickok was shot.

This show is also among the top of my list. For the last few weeks I was adjusting my schedule to catch it live on hi-def. Luckily my HD-Tivo came arrived over the week end. Tivo has really spoiled me over the last few years.
I like how the characters on the show are progressing. Jane annoyed me at the start, but now she cracks me up. Which is good because my wife, who griped about the language in the show, decided if you cant beat 'em, join em, by perfecting her Jane impersonation

Rub it in why dontcha? ;)
I can't wait to get my HDTivo to see this and the Sopranos in HD, but I gotta wait till I move closer to NYC to justify the cost (should be within the month).
This show has surprised me because I normally don't care for Westerns, but this one I like.

Great episode. I really liked the confrontation between Swearengen and Bullock. The conversation started off cordial, but as soon as Bullock got on message, Swearengen removed the bottle of whiskey from the table. That Swearengen, always thinking of the bottom line! No sense wasting a free shot of whiskey on an adversary!

For me Ian McShane (Swearengen) has come out of nowhere and become someone I will definitely look out for in the future. His IMDb listing is quite extensive.

On Ian McShane's last series, Lovejoy Mysteries, the closest he got to cursing was "Foxtrot Oscar".:)

Charlie and Jane at Bills grave will not be soon forgotten either !
Posted by: warrenevans
how come they buried Wild Bill before they buried that ladies husband
Posted by: bicker
I believe the original intention was to bury the New Yorker back in New York. They were keeping him cold by keeping him in the creek. There was never any intention of sending Wild Bill's body anywhere.

oknow that i read about the creek I remember JAne talking about the creek.

We don't seem to see any families in Deadwood. For those of you who know something about the history of the place, is that how it was? The way the 2 bordello owners went nuts over the sister makes me think there aren't many women around--at least not ones that aren't already in the biz.

Where did you get an HD Tivo?!?!?!?! I will buy one right now! I have never seen one before.
Thanks
Andy

Bullock and Star both sent their families east because they didn't feel Deadwood would be safe enough, I'm sure most of the others did the same.

I pre-ordered mine back in Feb at "Good Guys" and received it last week end. There are several threads about them in the "HDTV Tivo powered PVR" forum.

It took 2-3 weeks to really get into it but I now love this show. I have not been able to figure out what the brother and sister were whispering toward the end of the show but I realize they are not what they seem.....hummmmmm. Jane is my favorite character.

They were trying to decide which place of employment to shake down.
I think they are in for a shock though. The look on the girl's face when Dan knifed the guy was proof of that. Neither Cy nor Swearengen is the type to be scammed.

Do any of you Deadwood fans watch "Wild West Tech" on the History Channel? I've seen it advertised for quite some time now, but was never moved to watch an episode until the one shown on May 4 called "Brothel Tech".
Since prostitution is such a prominent theme on Deadwood, I just had to watch it to see how accurately it is portrayed on Deadwood. I would have to say that what we see on Deadwood is very close.
I liked the part where Keith Carradine explained how they had no blankets or comforters, just an old oil cloth spread. It routinely covered the foot of the bed, so the cowboy's dirty boots wouldn't soil the bed.
They also explained how venereal disease was called "The Calamity", and then in the same sentence, started talking about Marthy Jane Cannary, although there are other sources that indicate she received that nickname for different reasons.
For those not familiar with the show, Keith Carradine (aka Wild Bill Hickock on "Deadwood") is the host of "Wild West Tech".
