Deadwood - worth watching?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have saved all the episodes thus far. While I have been a big fan of most of HBO's original programming, I wasn't that impressed with the premiere of Deadwood (which I finally watched last night). Perhaps it was just due to the introduction of so many characters, but I just didn't get involved in the drama. And the scenes for episode two didn't entice me to invest more time in the series.

I also found the shedloads of cursing to be a bit over the top. I have no real issue with F bombs and even the occasional C bomb, but this was like cursing for the sake of cursing.

Should I hang in there and watch a few more, or is the first episode as good as it gets? I want to believe, but could this be the first new HBO drama I have passed on in years?

You will be cheating yourself enormously if you give up on the show. The cursing doesn't get any better, but the writing and performances are absolutely top-notch. For my money, it's the best show on television. I find myself waiting for Sopranos to finish so I can hurry up and watch Deadwood. Stick with it!

Trust me. Watch it.

If you are on the fence go back to the Deadwood thread for the pilot. You will see many of us had the same complaints you did. Now skim over the threads for following episodes. I think you'll see we are quite pleased.

I too quit after the pilot, but kept all episodes. Thanks for the head-up.

definatily keep watching. Either the cursing is getting less and less each episode, or I am just getting used to it ;)

My opinion is that it is slightly less but implemented and executed far better than in the pilot.

Yes, yes, three times yes.

It is fantastic. But stick with it, it takes time to get really into it.

I know others have said this same stuff, but I thought I'd throw in another vote for YES :)

Add another vote to "definitely keep watching." I was ready to pass on what I figured would be a predictable TV Western due to all the other existing SP's I felt bound to. Then I read this review (Tim Goodman @ SF Chronicle) and saw many other positive comments, so I decided to check it out, and am thrilled I did.

I think the review linked above hit this show head-on: 1) the swearing is practically another character in the show and 2) it takes a few episodes for everything to get started, but once it does, it completely sucks you in. And I'd agree with the other comments that in latter episodes the cussing doesn't seem so foreign or forced, but a part of the natural cadence of speech.

Second best show on tv...spread them out over several days....TV like this doesnt come around often.

Good show. Watch it. Don't watch it with your kids.

As if one more vote matters....it's good stuff - watch it.

And kudos to those of you that went for the good ole' record-half-the-season trick. Even though HBO is far less likely to not finish a show's full run, it's a great tactic for a questionable show. I actually like it when a show gets cancelled 5 episodes into the season...I figure that I saved time NOT watching it and getting attached to it.

I was in the same boat as you. I had 3-4 eps saved and watched the pilot. GEEZ there's A LOT of cursing!! And I wasn't that excited about watching the rest, but I figured I should give it a shot. After the third show I was hooked. There is still a lot of cursing, but I don't mind anymore and it seems to fit the show better now for some reason. And it's even funny at times! "I apologize..." "SHUT THE F* UP!!!" Hehehe, I still laugh at that one...

Although I do have a bit of a problem with the unessecary cursing I find the show to be of the same high quality with most of HBO's programming.

The really surprising thing to me is the actor who plays Seth Bullock. It took me until this weeks episode to figure out exactly who he was.

Timothy Olyphant played the best friend of Mark Wahlberg in Rock Star, the drug dealer in Go, and the pshyco in Scream 2.

When I found out who it was I was completely blown away. This dude has some serious fricking talent.

I've really enjoyed it. Cursing doesn't bother me at all, but even I found myself wondering how many rewrites were done to include more cursing each time.

Here is my probably incorrect theory. Given the freedom to write for HBO and free from normal network censors, they simply went overboard. Also, since you eventually get used to the harsh language I'm convinced that as time went on he would look back at the script and go "Hmmm I thought this was harsher the first time, but I really want to let loose so I'll make sure I add some more."

*shrug*

The first episode is definately the worst in terms of seeing how many bad words they can throw into a conversation.. The writers Seem to have gotten a lot out of their system and have pulled back (just a little though).

I won't lie and say if you are sensitive to strong language it cleans up that much, because it doesn't. But the first episode is Waaaaay overboard and I think the ones after that, while rough, are palatable.

As for plot, I am intrigued by the characters, and while some shows are hit and miss, all in all its been very entertaining.

"Be brief."

"BE F*CKED!"

Ditto here... I was very underwhelmed by the first episode, but stuck with it and it's absolutely been worth it. Like others have said, you sort of get accustomed to the swearing (and as the story and characters take off, it feels much less forced than in the first one).

There's certainly not less cursing now... USA Today said there were 63 F-bombs in this week's episode. :)

Timothy Olyphant also was in Dreamcatcher (Pete). Keith Carradine fans (playing Wild Bill Hickock) can also catch him on the History Channel's Wild West Tech series that is in first run right now.

This show is worth watching for Calamity Jane alone, she is a laugh out loud funny character at times. But it is true, it takes two, three eps to draw you in.

This is the best show on TV right now. I think the cursing is hilarious at times. Calamity Jane is the best character on TV. The characcters are multidimensional.

I love this show!

I didn't set this up to record at first, but I have been catching up on Comcast On-Demand. Now, that I actually like the show, I'll be Tivo'ing the remaining episodes. Do you get On-Demand?

I've seen a commercial on HBO talking about how "if you missed any episodes of Deadwood watch..." I think the rerun the past three shows on Mondays, sorry I don't remember what night they do it... That's what TiVo is for! :D

You hit the nail on the head for me. Between the Jane character and the Bullock character, I'm hooked.

The first episode was very coarse, and the second (or was it the third?) with the
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
whole full monty
(opted to spoiler that part just in case, but lets just say the language wasn't the only area that the show opted for shock value in) was also a bit rough.

The characters are absolutely fascinating though, and I'm really, really, really glad that I've stuck it out, because it's been very rewarding.
