DSL Lines interfere with my tivo call

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: zonko

I just had DSL put into my house and now Tivo does not make a call to download any information.
Once I unplug my DSL my tivo worked flawlessly. Any ideas?

Do you have the appropriate filters installed on all your phone equipment, including the Tivo? Your phone company should have supplied them.

I have installed all filters on all operating phones

To be clear, does this include the Tivo? It technically is a phone device.

Sorry- YES this includes TIVO outlet.

Well beyond that guess, I'd just be taking wild guesses.

I assume you don't have a two line phone system with the DSL on line two.

Have you tried both a different phone cord and plugging the Tivo into another outlet? Perhaps the line to the outlet, or the line your hooking the Tivo up with is defective.

If the Tivo is connected through another device (e.g. a splitter, a caller ID unit, etc.) have you tried connecting it directly to the outlet?

Have you tried hooking a different telephone line to the DSL modem? (maybe that line is defective).

I'm assuming this is a SA Tivo--can you get it to call a different number?

That's the end of my wild guesses, but I suspect the connection without the DSL modem is probably marginal and it is somehow making it worse.

Make sure you've connected the filter the right way. They are not reversible; one end should be labeled to be towards the wall, the other towards the phone.

How do you "unplug your DSL"? Take the modem out of the loop?

What error message does your TiVo give?

Does a phone work when plugged into the outlet you want to use for the TiVo? Is there noise on the line?

I would go with JimSpence's suggestion. My DSL is sketchy in that on some phone jacks I need the filter but on others I don't.

Just ran into the same problem with a buddy of mine who ordered DSL. One jack needed the filter while another, less than 50 feet away didn't.

Depends on the system. I have some here that create noise on the lower/audible spectrum. You could also try better filters.

i had the same exact problem, i got it working buy buying a linksys dsl filter at bestbuy for about $10. i guess the ones that i got from SBC didnt do that great of a job of "filtering"

My phone company installed a data/voice filter in the Network Interface Demarcation box outside of the house. From there I have a dedicated line to the DSL modem and the rest of the house is on the voice side. Therefore, no filters required at the phones or TiVos. The OP may want to investigate this type of installation.

Yep, I have the same set up at home. I have the DSL brought in on one jack in my house, where I have my router and Cisco Wireless Access Point. My question is, Why not set-up the Tivo to make the call on a Wireless LAN? The USB adapter is rather cheap as well as the Wireless APs.... And it works great.....

You can pick one of those up at Fry's and install it yourself (thus eliminating the need for individual filters). This requires a DSL-only line (CAT-3 or better) from the demarcation point to the DSL modem.

zonko, do you have a Series2 DVR? (i.e., a DVR from TiVo, Sony, Toshiba or Pioneer.)

If so, you can use your new DSL broadband line to connect to the TiVo service. That'll save your phone line for your exclusive use.
