You heard correctly, The Shield's been renewed for Season 4:

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - FX has picked up "The Shield" for a fourth season, making the gritty cop drama the basic cable network's longest running original series.

FX has ordered 15 additional episodes of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series, which stars Michael Chiklis (news) as a corrupt cop, with the fourth season scheduled to launch in early 2005.

"This year's arc of episodes is not only the strongest yet, but as good a season of television as I've seen during my entire career," FX entertainment president John Landgraf said.

After a slow start in its season three premiere March 9, "The Shield" has rebounded in the ratings. Season three is scheduled to wrap June 15.

So yippee! :D

Good news.

I really have to wonder what's going on at FX. FOX seems to be only interested in sensationalism and quick ratings. FX, OTOH, seems to be content to allow quality shows to progress naturally, slowly gaining viewers over time.

You just have to wonder how long before FX is corrupted.

Great!! This is easily some of the best stuff on TV.

Fantastic news, not that I doubted it'd be picked up again. Here's hoping it only gets better from here. :)

I hate to say it, but at some point this show is going to have to succumb to the inevitable ....

If it remains a critical success, there will likely be pressure by the key actors to either
a) get paid more (cf. Simpsons, Friends, every other succesful show ever) or
b) seek to further their careers elsewhere (the David Caruso effect).

In addition, the key writers/producers will get bored with the same characters, along with receiving offers to create new shows, which will distract them from the current one leading to a deterioration in quality (see: X-files)

Since the show is on FX, and doesn't have primetime network level ratings, the money is probably not there for big payouts , probably resulting in either in strife on the set or losses in the principal cast (or writers).

The one good thing is probably syndication rights - I'm not sure how close they are to being able to syndicate. I thought it was 100 eps for a 30 minutes show, so I'm not sure if its 50 or 100 for an hour long show.

Anyway, enjoy it while you can, folks!

Great news! this is my favorite show on Tv. The bad thing though is that we'll have yet another long wait in between seasons when S3 ends.:(

I wonder what Season 4 will be like the way Season 3 is going.

This was only a matter of time. This show is so good not even Fox would cancel it.

BTW, I'm only making a point here. Of course Fox would cancel it. ;)

Unfortunately, with Chiklis' history, I agree with you. IIRC, he single-handedly killed The Commish because he didn't think he was getting enough money. So, we'll enjoy it while we can. Maybe the best show on TV right now!
