Sound effects don't work when on HD channel

I just noticed that the little Tivo popping sound effects don't work if I am watching any HD channel and go to the guide, scroll, etc. If I'm currently on an SD channel, the "guide" button produces the pop sound effect as does scrolling on the menu. No sound effects at all when I have it on an HD station. This is consistent across all SD/HD channels: sound effects fine if watching SD, not there when watching HD.

Strange.

Anyone else notice this?

My software version shows 3.1.5-01-2-357

TIA,
Mike

That's right. If you're using the optical digital audio connection, then you won't get those sounds when a Dolby Digital audio signal is present. Most HD broadcasts include DD.

Even if TiVo wanted to add their sound effects to the digital audio, it is technically impossible to do in a satisfactory way. Encoded Dolby streams cannot be decoded and subsequently re-encoded without a quality loss. Dolby encoders (hardware or software) are also expensive, even if it could be done.

Makes sense, although with everything else they've done with this unit, seems like they could have found a clever way of adding the little pop sounds to a DD stream. I guess then it would have cost $2000, and I would have ended up spending $4k on Ebay. ;)

This is the same with the series2 SD DirecTiVo boxes.
