I'm looking to buy a TIVO type PVR and I have not found anyone anywhere talking about any differences in hardware between manufacturer (Philips, Sony, and Tivo itself are the ones that I've found so far)

Is there any reason to buy one over the other or should I just flip a coin and pick one?

Within a particular group (i.e. Series 1 or Series 2) the hardware for each manufacturer is virtually identical. The only notable difference being the units with built in DVD players or DVD burners. And even those use the same basic guts as any other Series 2 unit.
