Me on the Radio

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Not exactly Radio 2, but it's a start!

www.cmpradio.co.uk

Listen between 8-9 am if you can. Monday and Tuesday :D

Posted by: iankb

Is Carl Richards your stage name? :D

Posted by: cwaring

Yeah. Well, 'professional name'. I think it sounds better :)

Posted by: sanderton

Never did Eddie any harm...

Posted by: cwaring

LOL. A very good point!
On again Tues 11th @ 8am.

On the other hand, having the Waring surname did not seem to harm the professional career of another Eddie - Eddie Waring the commentator (including Grandstand/Rugby League and It's a Knockout.)

Perhaps rather than a change of name, you need a catch phrase. Eddie Waring had things like "take an early bath" and "up and under" (I don't think "duplicate post" quite cuts the mustard).

Or a noun to add a touch of menace - Mr Richards has "Evil Eddie". Although if you choose the rather obvious Whirlwind Waring, perhaps people would think you were a snooker player.

Whirling Waring, although less dramatic (unless you are a Dervish) would at least invoke an image of spinning disks. Carping Carl? Would an occupant of a green house throw stones?

As I don't know of any other Warings named Eddie, I assume that was the one to which Stuart was originally referring :)

Oh, and I do know that people in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones, but that's a different joke entirely ;)

On reflection you are right, I thought he was acknowledging your new surname and DJ status in the light of his vast music collection, rather than being in his rugby enthusiast mode - Eddy Waring had a slightly dodgy reputation among some purists.

"Evil" Eddie Richards is a leading DJ, extremely well connected both sides of the Atlantic, in his own pond, a much bigger fish than Eddie Waring.

Referring to the US scene reminds me of the way that porn actors sometimes create their professional names. They use the name of their first pet as their first name and their mothers maiden name as their last name - it would work for me.

Posted by: cwaring

Well, for the record (and to dispell any future rumours *someone* may start ;)), Richard is my middle name :)

BTW, didn't know there was an Eddie Richards. This is the guy, I assume?

Posted by: Regor

Just had a quick listen. Good variety of music you have there. I enjoyed Cyprus Hill, but not sure about Barry Manilow !!:D

Posted by: cwaring

(Just in case!)

He's joking :) I played neither!

I know it's early, but you were tuned to the right station, weren't you Regor? :D

Posted by: Regor

Obviously not!!!

I followed the link at the start of the thread, and clicked on the listen live thing.:(

Ah well, I'm sure you were very good. (But I have been singing Cocacobana all day )

Posted by: cwaring

Well that's strange. Assuming you tuned in at the correct time :)

Posted by: sanderton

I was referring to the Mr Edward Waring of It's a Knockout fame. I beleive he also played the "other" code of rugby, but I'll forgive him that. :)

Posted by: Regor

I was listening at around 8:10 this morning. Is it possible to receive the wrong audio stream ?

Well, here are the relevant entries from my playlist for around that time:

code:
Barenaked Ladies - One Week (Played on 11/05/2004 at 08:06:45) Spice Girls - Who Do You Think You Are (Played on 11/05/2004 at 08:10:20) Desmond Dekker - You Can Get It If You Really Want (Played on 11/05/2004 at 08:14:03)

Is it possible to receive the wrong audio stream ?
No, I don't think so.

Are you sure the station actually played what was in your play list?

It was not possible for me to give the Internet much attention on the days at the time you were playing.

All I was able to do was to give it partial attention for about 5 minutes at about 8.15am today (11th May 2004).

According to the displayed text, Bananarama was being played, can't remember the title, but I did not say to myself "Hey, they are not playing what the text says". Although as I have already said, I was not able to give the narrowcast much attention.

Interestingly, some could claim that Bananarama is of the same genre as what actually appears in your play list for about the same time, perhaps there was a substitution - Did you actually listen / make a recording of your show?

By the way, the two separate play lists on your carlrichards web site are both headed by the same date and time - which reminds me. A long time ago I clicked the blogging link on your caarlwaring home page and it did not seem to lead anywhere. Just tried it again and it still appears to lead nowhere - but perhaps it is my non-mainstream browser with very restrictive security settings that is to blame.

No :) There may have been a period when I was not actually "on the air" when I thought I was :) I'll explain...

The way their system works makes it possible for anyone to stream content through their own internet connection. If their system hears a period of silence longer than 25 seconds, it starts it's own auto-playout until the stream returns. From my own recording of the show there was a 20 second period of silence (when someone :o pressed the wrong button!) but as this was within tollerence I didn't, at the time, expect any problems.

However, as you mention that the the text displayed something other than the title of my show - "Four Decades of Hits" I suspect that the auto-play system kicked in and I was actually talking to myself for most of the hour :(

I am investigating!

Thanks. Fixed it now!

As I haven't blogged since January, my account has probably been deleted. Fixing it now :)

You have changed it, but I am not sure you have fixed it.

My guess is that the date should have been changed from May 10th to May 11th. However, what it actually has been changed to is May 12th.

The Tardis IS returning!

Posted by: Regor

I definately remember hearing Bananarama too. :)

Hehe. I might play "The Timewarp" if I had it :D

I now have do doubt you did. That will have been the auto-playout system as previously mentioned :(

Thanks for at least trying listen anyway :)

Next on: Tues @ 12pm, Thurs @ 1pm.

Would that be the 20th May Thursday after the Tuesday coming up, or the Thursday coming up (ie 13th May)?

Posted by: cwaring

Sorry! 18th and 20th May.

Posted by: iankb

Is that this year or last year? ;)

Posted by: cwaring

OH GAWD! ;)

Posted by: cwaring

Don't forget! Definately on-air *this* Tuesday @ 12pm and Thursday @ 1pm. Technical problems now sorted thanks to a large hammer!

Would be nice to hear from you :D

Actually, while I'm here.....

Are there any classical music fans here? I was thinking of presenting an hour of classical music as this would certainly be unique for CMP if not most independent, small, internet radio stations. (ie barring Radio 3 and Classic FM!) and was just wondering whether it might be something people - ie fans of the genre - would be 'up for'; to use the vernacular :)

Posted by: sanderton

I didn't think Atomic Kitten and Brtney had recorded any classical?

Posted by: cwaring

Hehe! You don't think I could like both genres? :)

Had to study classical music for my 'A' level many moons ago. Okay, so I failed it 'cos of the practical but I still appreciate the music.

Posted by: mike0151

Some of the earlier Moody Blues and Barclay James Harvest albums have a very classical feel to them - might be a good intro to a mix of classical tracks.

Posted by: cwaring

Maybe. Would be a totally seperate show, though. I would never mix the two :)

Posted by: Regor

Any technical hitches today carl ? All OK I hope.

Couldn't listen today but will do on Thu :)

Posted by: cwaring

Nope. Well, my mouth let me down occasionally and I pressed the wrong button once! Other than that, everthing went great, thanks :D

I have a significant amount of classical stored with the rock on my iPod. Because I love listening to all those tracks that I'd forgotten about, I tend to play my iPod tracks totally randomly. A bit of Hendrix, a bit of Carmina Burana, followed by a little bit of Cream. Lovely. :D

Posted by: cwaring

Don't think it would work on radio. Totally different presentation styles, for a start.

Think of it as a challenge, working out how to do something that has not been done before.

Talking of challenges, GarySargent's interests include "DJing". Perhaps he could sign up with cmp radio and throw his hat (he no longer seems to be wearing it) into the ring.

If there is not a k.o. we could run a poll to give a points decision

Interesting. I debated for ages before deciding not to put any of my classical CDs on the iPod because of the space they eat up. However borderline stuff like Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Micheal Nyman has gone on, so perhaps I should reconsider!

Posted by: Regor

Heard part of the show earlier. Sounded good! (especially without Manilow this time)

How many listeners do CMP Radio get?

Posted by: cwaring

Thank-you for listening, and your kind comments.

As a policy, CMP Radio don't release official listener figures so I have no idea. However, I'm not cynical enough to suggest that this means they don't actually have any :D (I'll leave that to people such as Mr Gogborn ;))

BTW, I'm on next Tuesday and Thursday (again!) at 11am on both days. Also, the latter show is going to be a "70's Special" and I'm looking for people to send in their best memories of that decade.

If anyone on here would like to do so, please use the following email address: studio@carlrichards.co.uk

Thanks.

Perhaps the viewing figures would be higher if you also promoted your slots in the chat section of the telewest forum that you have set up and are running - what have we done wrong to deserve such special treatment? :)

Doubt it. This forum has way more many members than the one you mention, or were you trying to be funny/sarcastic? :D

BTW... viewers? We're talking about a radio show here ;)

Oh yea of little faith.

The way I diagnosed and the reason you discovered you had been talking to yourself, rather than being "on the air", was because, as I posted a few posts back, I was viewing and reading the scrolling text in the CMP utility, not because I was concentrating on the audio feed element.

Posted by: cwaring

Ahh. The 'smart-alec' approach ;)

I thought the 'smart-alec' approach would have been a long riff about 'the convergence of technology'.

The convergence in this case being that a webcam feature is an integral part of the CMP live player application.

Although I have not seen the CMP webcam video stream in action yet, I have a recollection that you put on the web somewhere (perhaps now deleted) a message suggesting you would be trying to fire up the webcam server while you were presenting,

Posted by: cwaring

Indeed I did. However, as I mentioned on my last show, I didn't bother with it as it was crashing all the time.

The web-cam feature built into the Live Player is a seperate thing altogether and is something I have not yet installed.

Curiously, it uses an older version of the same software (www.webcamfirst.com) that I was using for mine. All I would have to do to use their server instead of my own by changing the appropriate settings in the software.

All that being said, I don't have a brilliant cam so you wouldn't see much anyway.

I have since removed the link from my site and will not be using it again.
