The Council
By Manny Coto
Archer tries diplomacy.
· Previously on
· Did they essentially say that Archer and company were succeeding? Well that takes some of the suspense out of it.
· A sphere expedition. The MACO is dead meat.
· So the sphere builders already know. Doesn’t that cause a problem for Degra?
· The Sphere Builders are like gods.
· Reptilian sun lamps.
· Hey, it’s Mayweather!
· The chamber.
· Oh, God. We’re depending on Archer’s speaking skills. Earth is doomed.
· The exhaust port? Rather convenient.
· So what needs to be vented?
· At least Trip’s still pissed.
· Oooohh, Archer’s a bad boy.
· Yep, knew Degra was going to buy the farm the moment Trip apologized.
· A worm? Shades of Dax.
· “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”
· The weapon’s on the Council planet?
· The Xindi have transporters?
· Why Hoshi?
On a pure “Setting up the action episode” this one worked but I still found it rather paint by numbers (who didn’t know that Degra was going to get killed and the Reptilians would launch the weapon anyways). The pacing has almost always seemed off on this arc. But then I've never felt any urgency in this arc to begin with
I also felt that Trip gave up his anger to easily considering everything but all the other hand, considering the hap hazard writing of this element, I suppose that it shouldn’t be a total surprise.
And I’m assuming that the sphere expedition will yield something.
I’m feeling generous though and I’ll give this a B- although this may be subject to revision.
(My review next week will be delayed as I will be out of the country).

I thought this ep was on par with some of the best Star Treks from any of the series. Also surely one of the best eps from this series. You've got some major issues if this only yields a B-. I doubt anyone on this planet would be able to live up to your expectations. My vote is for A to A+, but it's only a vote, as yours was. BTW, great line re: Archer's public speaking voice; definitely had me ROTFLMAO! Also, did anyone notice that everyone is now hurtling toward Earth? I'm also wondering what the heck they wanted with Hoshi. It might be that the reptilians want to make it difficult for Archer to communicate, but most of it looked automated by now, except for some of those insectoid dialects. The ending left more suspense that any other Enterprise eps, that's for sure!
Don't feel the urgency? Are you nuts?

What does MACO stand for? Marine.. ???
Nice that nothing was being expelled out of the exhaust port. Plus if anything was, wouldn't it be noticable... hence the cloak shield would be useless.
Killing Degra suprised me, I figured he would only be seriously injured with the Doc healing him up.
They probably picked Hoshi because they probably scanned her at the counsel meeting. I guess you have to have a scan of someone to differenciate between different humans.
How was the weapon launched with just 2 codes? even though the reptilian says "we are aware we only have 2 codes"

I suspect they picked Hoshi because with her language skills she can decode the Humanoid or Arboreal Xindi key to actually use the weapon.

I figured it was for the translation skills - either to directly benefit from them, or in an attempt to cripple Enterprise's ability to interact with other races.
The "who's going to die" teaser is compelling...I know that most people here utterly hate one character or another.

I really enjoyed this episode. Granted, it may have had a little too much cliche as far as Trek writing goes, but it still had a lot of good action, and I felt the urgency.
I think Enterprise might actually be staging a comeback. Since it returned from its 5 week break in April, it's really had some great moments.
Posted by: Redleg
This was one of my favorite episodes so far. Not perfect, not groundbreaking, but the acting and writing and pace were all clicking this week. We're actually getting some payoff for this long storyline.

I would have to go back and check but did anyone catch who directed this ep?
Posted by: Skittles
IIRC, David Livingston was the director last night.

The episode was OK, probably one of the Better Enterprises but still way off the quality of some of the other series episodes. Problems with the show?
1) It's going to take a lot more than 1 desperate human to convince anyone that their "god" is wrong.
2) It's just too easy for Enterprise to go in and get the plot reolving devices. The Xindi have been investigating the spheres for ages and they haven't noticed an open hole? Yes it is hidden But their technology should alt least let them see what our skank can. And removing the memory module? why is it someone that doesn't know anything about wht they're doing, can service a millenium old object?
3) The show's entirely too predictable. I'll go out on a limb and tell you what the Xindi will learn from the memory module, spoilerized so as not to ruin the plotline for those of you who haven't figured it out. If you don't want a sense of deja vu, don't read the spoiler.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
There is only a couple of reasons for having the "extinct" avian Xindi introduced, 1) as a red-herring or 2) as a plot device for the remaining Xindi to use and despise their gods. Yes, I predict that the extinction of the Xindi Avians will have been caused by the Guardians. And that the memory retrieved by T'Pol will prove it _and/or_ that the Guardians were responsible for the initial fragmenting of the Xindi.
I'd give it the same as JYoung, B-. Despite the obvious flaws and contrivences.
Posted by: rtype
I agree with the previous poster's spoiler/prediction.
It wasn't a bad episode. I like the aquatics. I've always (even before TOS) had a problem with there being so many verbal language using bipeds in the world. It just doesn't seem like evolution should be QUITE so predictable on so many different planets in so many different situations. It's like saying "we may not all come from monkeys, but the end goal is that we all have four limbs, walks around on the hind two and make noises with our eating holes."
I liked T'Pol being all serious and in charge for a change. I liked that the security folks finally stopped squabbling. I liked that they had the guts to kill someone. I liked seeing sci-fi action (people in space suits and laser weapons firing). I could've done without the Insectoids altogether. Maybe they could have had Pandoids or Lionoids instead.
Posted by: blueshoo
I'd also agree with the spoiler/prediction, but don't think it's necessarily the end of the world that it's predictable. It's a rare show that isn't predictable. I'm pretty sure we all knew from the outset that Archer et al. would stop the Xindi weapon from reaching Earth, one way or another, and most likely not through killing all of them. So as the episodes progress and more information is provided, the predictions become more focused.
I guess my expectations for Enterprise aren't as high as other shows I watch, so I'm generally satisfied with what I get from it, and thought this episode was good. After all, if you never expect a grade higher than a "B" for a show, a B- isn't bad!

If they're hinting that they're going to be killing off a regular actor on Enterprise, I'm disappointed, because I'd like to see all of them stay. But if one has to go, I vote for...... either T'pol or Hoshi. (Not a prediction - simply a statement about which actors/actresses I least like. Sorry, I do like Mayweather.)
I'm assuming that none of the MACO are regular actors in my above statement. Otherwise, yes... let one of them die instead.

And is it just me or does the captain look like he could use a change of clothes and a shower? Only one uniform, Archer? Does making him look dirty make him look more determined?<snicker>

One of the better ones. As far as Enterprise goes, I'd give it an A-, but compared to TNG or DS9, or even Voyager, I'd say B to B- is appropriate.

You know, I try really hard not to respond to Jhausmann and Jyoung's posts too much because I don't want to end up in a fight about what level of suckage is appropriate to assign this show.
I like the show much more than you guys, but if you think it's cool to sound like the Comic Book Guy from the Simpson's, well, it's easier for all of us if I just gloss over your nitpicking and enjoy the show for what it is.
THIS POST HAS GONE TOO FAR, HOWEVER! :D
Come on, dude, if the Cap's uniform was neat and presed, YOU KNOW you'd be saying something like, "OMG so the ship is held together with chewing gum and bailing wire, but I guess the laundry service is still in top shape! Worst. Episode. Ever!"
Besides, both he and his uniform were much much cleaner when he went into the council to present his case - so he did clean up for the big day.
If this were Babylon 5 instead of Enterprise you guys would be citing this as just the sort of attention to detail that provides such gripping realism to this futuristic space opera. Instead you use it, just like everything else, as a reason to nitpick the show.
Pal, he was captured by the bad guys, interrogated, got stuffed in a pod and sent back to his broke-arse ship, and no, he probably hasn't had time for a shower and a new uniform, what with having to spend time with his distant relations last week and all.
Even someone as passionately unhappy with this show as you are ought to be able to see that you've gone overboard with this one.
(sigh) bash away.....

Overboard? How ironic....
Well, he's going to try and establish diplomatic relations with several Xindi races that would just as soon kill him as speak with him and he hits the council looking (and presumably smelling, perhaps not) like crap. Hmm, the insectoids might appreciate it and the aquatics probably won't care but the rest would more than likely be offended... Every captain (and apparently line officer) in all the other Treks had dress uniforms. It is a naval tradition (and starfleet follows them). Archer, he just pops over in his work clothes...
Why would you want a nitwit like him (see dog peeing on planets) trying to be a diplomat? He's not. He doesn't have a clue.
When I was out cruising the pacific, I had two sets of dress blues and three sets of dungarees. Wasn' hard to get into a clean uniform, even if the ship's laundry wasn't working....
Distant relations? Non-existent relations. The moment they failed to enter the portal, the crew of the enterprise that sired those 'relations' failed to exist.

Okay, so you either didn't read, or didn't understand my post at all.
I did point out, and a review of the show will demonstrate, that he did, in fact, clean up before being seen by the Xindi council. I noticed it. Sorry you didn't.
I actually wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts if you'd read and comprehend my post, but if you're going to ignore what I say, lets just drop it - you can go back to ranting about how awful this show is, and I can go back to looking forward to the next ep.

I was still working on the post when you replied to it. Re-read mine. The fact that he showered doesn't alter Archer failing to present a 'proper' image, when Earth's future <snicker> is at stake or when establishing diplomatic relations. "Dressing up" is nothing new and has happened on most, if not all, the other Treks. And they did have a leisurely cruise to the council planet, whre Archer boned up on how to present his case....
A captain that stresses informing family of the death of their loved one over critical ship repairs is gonna stress hygene, doncha think?
One last thing, the captain sets the standard for the ship.

Bugs me! All the bashing that goes on. Silly.
Item 1: Possibly the initial trellium exposure T'Pol experienced caused brain damage not identifiable by non-Vulcan physicians. Maybe even she was unable to identify. And as medically private as Vulcans have always been you probably would not have found her admitting it to a Vulcan physicain much less non-Vulcan.
Item 2: Possibly the brain damage caused an instant addiction in Vulcans.
Item 3: If she was brain damaged than all the rules about Vulcan logic go out the window. She is damaged and the brain is a very complicated thingy. Even mild strokes can completely change a persons personality.
Item 4: Federation scientists have ALWAYS had a knack for figuring out alien technology way to quickly. That has happened all the time
Every new Star Trek that has come along has had hosts of nay sayers until deeper into the series. Has anyone noticed that there was a reset on the writting that has truly made a difference in the progress of the show. 3 Shows straight now the ratings even amongst the playa' hata's has improved. Went from D- to B- in three shows right after the 5 week break... coincidence?
Bet none of you saw Degra pouring liquor from a bottle that had a dragonfly medalion hanging from the neck. How did an alien species from the expanse get a california wine?
Mundane items I've seen in Star Trek Episodes.
- Dutch bulb planter, solid metal with handle and pointy end (used as alignment tool in Voyager by killer hologram as weapon of convenience)
- Bird feeder, long and tubular with metal bandings (used as some sort of injector assembly, had a flourescent light inside, in TNG movie by Warf during an EVA)
- Aforementioned dragonfly medalion on alien wine bottle. (Posessed by Degra before meeting Humans)
- Sound density meter used in speaker placement applications (used as alignment tool in Enterprise series)
- Salt shaker (used as medical probe, I think we all know about this, in original ST series)

Erm...re-read your post, but it still doesn't address any of the points I made. The above quoted post does have you acknowledging that he did shower and change into a clean uniform, which is really all I was discussing to begin with.
Thanks for the bonus rant about how bad of a diplomat Archer is, though.

Laundry may or may not be a valid complaint about Enterprise, but if it is a valid complaint, it is surely somewhere below the other five thousand or so valid complaints, so um, why bring it up? Was it REALLY so challenging to find something legitimate to gripe about?

Don't forget that Daniels gave Archer a brief rundown on the concept of "The Federation" during his visit to Future Enterprise.

I know, but Archer was the only one in his time who knew about this. I guess what bothered me the most was that Degra didn't seem the least bit surprised: "What's a 'Federation'?" ;) It would have made a good pretext for another bout of Archer brand rethoric.

It seemed that Archer had gone into a great deal of detail about what Daniel had told him--this statement struck me as more of an inspirational reminder than new information. ("Remember, both our peoples will be working together in peace if we pull this off.")

We won't know until May 20 whe UPN announces it's Fall Schedule.
But it's not looking good.
"The Council", earned a 3.4/5 in the overnight ratings. This is up 0.1 from last week's episode, "E²" (3.3/5) and well within statistical deviation.

Well, I can't say that they weren't trying. What with all the SFX shots, (the Sphere tour, the space battles, etc.) Much more engaging than watching Archer mope around the halls and scowling for 43 minutes.
Couple of things I've wondered about this unique race called the Xindi.
The Arboreals. Now, do they have prehensile tails? And, do they put their clothes on after climbing down out of the trees or what?
The Aquatics. Kiaphet Amman'sor, for instance. SHe is supposed to be from a powerful, wealthy family. How can you tell? I don't see any bling. There are no clothes. Do they live in a castle? Have a Cigarette boat with twin Merc engines? Polo ponies? How do you distinguish a rich Aquatic from a poor one?
Inquiring minds want to know.

I still don't like Enterprise and probably won't until we get this Xindi crap out of the way.
But I thought the space fight we saw was pretty cool. Nice work there.

I find it ironic that on DS9 Sisko mentions a war between the xin cathi (Sp?) could this be a race related to the xindi?

Of course not.
That would suggest some level of continuity.

I finally caught up on this episode last night (I have to watch the Sunday repeat due to conflicts).
Loved it! Diplomacy, treachery, cool space battles... the only thing this didn't have was T'Pol in the shower. :)
Posted by: EchoBravo
Can someone who hates Hoshi or Meriweather to the point of wanting them killed off explain why? Do you hate the underdeveloped characters or the actors portraying them? If anything, characters which haven't been fully explored invoke less of a reaction from me.
I mean, T'Pol, we've seen so much of her (literally and figuratively), that I can understand loving or hating her... But Hoshi and Meriweather, they're just sort of... there. And I thought the Meriweather episode with his family running the generational merchant ship was good stuff and advanced him some -- nevermind he has barely spoken two words since.
And Hoshi's wicked hot, for all that's worth. That's gotta count for something. ;)
Lastly, are there two more underdeveloped characters in modern Trek history than those two? I can't think of anyone on TNG, DS9 or VOY whom we know less about. Is there?

I can't be the only one waiting for this to happen can I? I really want the next episode to start with Archer walking by a mirror. Of course, the reflection will show Picard who will simply state, "Oh boy." in Archer's voice.
Anyone else want to see this? I would love for this whole thing to be summed up as a Quantum Leap...
Posted by: rtype
Kevin - you are most definitely not the only one wishing for that. :)
I don't hate anyone on Enterprise, since I don't know them. I don't even hate the producers, who have shown themselves to be pretty damned incompetent. And yes, Hoshi is beautiful and the person playing her may or may not be a good actress as well, but this has certainly not been an opportunity for her to prove that if she is--the best thing that could happen for her career, if she does have any ability, would be to move on beyond Enterprise. On Enterprise, her character has been idiotic at best--stupid annoying lines that made her few appearances seem like an obstacle. Likewise, Mayweather's British accent and smug attitude fitted atop a skinny little prick seems completely wrong for the head of security on a Enterprise class starship. Maybe I've gotten too used to Worf's presence but come on. Maybe this guy getting killed would send the Federation of the future a message to put someone tougher in that position.
So um, yes, I hope both characters are killed in the next episode. I wish the actror and actress who plays them nothing but the best and I hope to like their characters more in the next thing I see them in.

Actually I think it would be funnier if it was Janeway in the mirror. My favorite QLeap shows usully has him running around in drag, lol.
Rtype, I think you are talking about Reed. And I don’t think it would be any great loss they made him (or that Vimbo T’pol) a red shirt and send their asses flying out into space.

You've gotten your worthless characters confused. Reed is the chief of security(but I agree that he's no Worf, or even Natasha Yar). Mayweather is, um, now I'm not quite sure WHO the heck Mayweather is. Maybe they should put a red shirt on him and send him on the next away mission. :p

My bad. Mayweather is the darker complected fellow. He doesn't annoy me nearly as much as Reed and Hoshi do. He's kindof just there--sorta like that kid in South Park, Token. :)

I foresee a "Hoshi saves the day" episode. I'm glad someone provided a possible reason for them to take her though. That baffled me.
I'm pretty surprised at how good the Humans are at finding stuff out about the spheres, compared to the Xindi who have know about them for decades, and don't attribute them to their "Guardians," so there isn't any reason to avoid them.

It's because humans are curious, questioning and scientific and do not easily fall prey to religion, superstition and tradition the way those silly aliens do. ;)

I guess I'm in the minority here - I actually like Hoshi, although she certainly is underused and underdeveloped. I don't find her as annoying as Reed or as lackluster as Mayweather.
That being said, I still don't know why the Reptilians took her. Maybe because they wanted a human slave around the ship and she was the only one who could understand their insectoid guests?

Compared to T'Pol she is.

I honestly don't think there's anyone they could kill that would really change the dynamic (or lack thereof) of this show. I actually think the last few episodes have been pretty good.. its the whole concept of the show which is flawed, in my opinion.
But I'll keep watching as long as it's on (and it does look pretty great in HD... especially that battle sequence last week)

That's my opinion too. Some of this Xindi story would actually be good - in a non-ST sci-fi show.
