I dread to think how much they were asking just to let their rivals show 6-8 games a season.

They were not asking anything but were accepting bids.

The European Commission and Sky agreed on a reserve price which nobody met.

It also appears that the BBC did not bid as they would not be able to show them on satellite as they broadcast free-to-air.
