I was given a "said to be operational" Philips HDR112 with no hard drive. After a previous post in here, was able to get a file called hdr112.30.mfs for creating an original restore of the tivo software.

Being familiar with jumpers and ide settings I understand how to set up the pc. I just have no experience with Linux, so the commands or text strings completely elude me.

tools at hand

1 MFSTools (thanks Tiger)
2 HDR112.30.mfs image file

Can anyone help me with this problem.

Read the Hinsdale howto.

My self (in Windows), I copy image file to an easy to access folder (something like C:\tivo), jumper the Tivo drive to slave (actually CableSelect, I don't have to mess with jumpers at all), and connect it to the middle connector with my C-drive.
Linux sees my C drive add hda1, and my Tivo drive as hdb.

(My second IDE chain has my CD and ZIP drive, and is cabled in a way to be rather unaccessable to play musical drives with.)

HINT: IF you don't care to print the Hinsdale instructions, you can open a second terminal (by pressing alt-F2, Alt-F1 to go to the main one), cd to the mfs-tools folder, and more the documentation there, which is almost the same as the hinsdale instructions.

If you look in our online instructions:

http://www.upgrade-instructions.com

you'll see that we actually have an option specifically for people restoring images to drives.
