Problem with 2 x 160 GB Upgrade
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently got 2 Philips DSR704 Series 2 DTiVo.
I did a backup, and restored to a 160 GB Maxtor drive, then expanded to the rest of the first and onto a second drive. After I power up and get to liive TV, I get a "hardware error" that says I must restart, and call Philips if that doesn't work. I can watch live TV, but can not record or go to the list. Restarting yields the same error.
I used Hinsdale's instructions and boot disk to do the upgrade (so it should have loaded 2x137GB, right?). There were no hiccups/problems during the install, restore, or mfsadd operations.
Any idea what the problem could be? I suspect one of the drives may have a problem, as the buffer recognized as 2 MB instead of the 8 MB it should have been... Maybe that drive is the problem? I am currently waiting for a "clear and erase everything" to complete, but I don't think that is going to fix anything.

You might be surprised...

Most likely, the "clear and delete everything" will fix this. If it was an error #51 or if you moved the image from one DSR704 to another, you'll get that message. The C&D will clear it up.

Ah... I did move it from one 704 to another... Still waiting for the C&D to complete (been over an hour that it says it should take).
Thanks for the quick responses!

OK, C&D did get the recorder working, but now I am missing locals. I did a search, and a thread from 2003 says I should get them back between 15 minutes and overnight. I will let it go a day or so to see what happens, and repost on it for posterity.
Also, the drives are making alot of noise (I can hear them 12' away, with the house fan running). I could never hear the drives in my 2-drive SA that I have had over three years. Don't know what I will do about that, but something is going to have to change if it keeps up. I hope it is just busy indexing like crazy, and will settle down with time. It does seem to be functioning properly (no stuttering), so only time will tell...

Did you set the acoustic management on the drives?
As far as locals - you've heard right. If you call DTV, they can do it instantly.

You will likely need to us Amset acoustic management utilities to quiet the drives. I thought the drives were shipped in the quiet setting but maybe not. Amset can be downloaded from the Maxtor site assuming it works with the current drives. I have used it with older Maxtor drives. The Maxtor website will indicate if your specific model can be managed with Amset.

I did not Amset these drives, though I did on my SA drives. Definitely something I will do this weekend. I thought I read a while back that Amset really didn't quiet them down that much, that's why I didn't bother this time...
Also an update, still don't have locals this morning. I do plan to wait and not call DirecTV yet. I am just trying to convert from my non-upgraded (NU) box that has ~20 shows on it to the upgraded (U) one, and slowly delete the shows off the NU one until it doesn't hold anything unique. I am interested to see how long it takes to get the locals back on the U box "naturally", if for no other reason than to post it here (I am surprised how few threads I could find on the subject - seems like it would be a common issue). If I don't get them this weekend, I will call, though.

Well, I am bumping up on 24 hours, and still no locals. Doesn't seem like the guide data is filled in very well either. How/when does that data populate? Does the sat send down the guide data stream to all receivers at the same time, daily? Just curious...
I did find a Sat Reset feature in "Messages and Setup", I wonder if that would reset locals immediately?
I do plan to hold out until tomorrow at least... Don't know that I can make it to Monday without trying something.
