How about a box that has essentilyy what a Tivo has, except without tuner and encoder hardware, whose purpose is to be a receiving set top extension client for an HMO equipped full blown Tivo. Another $50 includes DVD playing hardware and functions.

The key is the price that such a device would have to be sold for... how much do they save by stripping out the tuner and encoder hardware? You'd still need a hard drive (since Tivos transfer shows via HMO, rather than stream), decoder, various output jacks. Could they make it for a cheap enough price to be attractive to a lot of people, while still making it profitable? I don't know the answers, but if it's feasible then hopefully they'll do it.
