Why Buy an Extended Warranty?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

In the past, with regular TVs, it was foolish to purchase extended warranties. Rarely did I encounter any problems.
Now, it's almost a given that anything HD related from DirecTV will have some type of major problem early on. I have purchased the RCA F38310 (I know not fully from D*), the Sony HD300 and this TIVO. Each has had many problems.
But why buy the extended warranty for the TIVO? For $8/month, the D* protection plan will cover your dish, dish alignment, cabling, HD+SD receivers, remove control, LNBs, etc. They will repair or replace your box if anything goes wrong.
Just want to make sure I am not missing anything here.

The only downside with the DirecTV plan regarding the coverage is that it won't cover an upgraded HD TiVo. If you are not going to open it up, that sure seems the way to go to me as soon as the manufacturer warranty is up.

There is another thread about this topic, with many posts. Often times the reseller extended warranty may be a better deal or may be a bit more loose, such that you could return the unit to factory state if it went bad. There is talk in the other thread about a warranty seal, etc.

If you plan to modify the unit, it would seem to me to be a waste of money to buy any protection plan. No way the manufacturer will stand behind a modified unit either.

I sure haven't seen a plan that will cover modified units. The DirecTV plan which covers all receivers, dishes, multiswitches and cables for $8/month would be the best plan if you are not going to modify, then no plan works as far as I know.

You just put the original drive back in if there are problems. I just bought two 250GB 7200rpm hard drives for $130 each. This way I can keep the original WD harddrive in case the HD-TiVo needs to be returned under the DirecTv protection plan. I would remove the new drives and reinstall the original drive before shipping it.
