Day After Tommorrow (spoilers) (movie)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I looked and can't find a thread on this, so I'll start one :)

I suppose a measure of a good movie is one that you keep thinking about the day after you see it. By that measure this must be a good movie. Ironically, I won't go so far as to say the acting was all that great, or even the plot itself. (Examples: where were the sick kid's parents during all this?)

But I really like the special effects, and the basic premise was very entertaining.

Question: remember those vortexes that had the -100 F air coming down? They explained it as tropospheric air that descended too quickly to heat up. For one thing, the lowest of the four atmospheric layers is the troposphere. (The stratosphere is directly above.) How tall is the troposphere? I bet the peak of Mt. Everest is in the stratosphere, but I really don't think it's 100 below up there. (or maybe I'm wrong.)

Furthermore, I should think that no matter how fast the air descends, the increase in pressure would heat it some.

They described this phenomenon to be like a hurricane. It makes sense that considering the speed of winds coming out from a hurricane, the eye is rapidly losing air, and so it must be replaced from somewhere: decending air down the eye from above. So, I'm wondering: is it cold inside the eye of a conventional hurricane?

Anyway, I don't want to nitpick the movie, because afterall, it's science fiction. It supposed to be entertaining; not 100% realistic. I definitely was entertained.

Was this on TV?

Did I miss it?

;)

Posted by: timckelley

oops! We need a 'Now Playing in the cinema' forum.

This is a movie that is not worth nitpicking. There were about 1,000 things that happened in it that couldn't in real life. It's just that type of movie.

I saw the movie on Friday and thought it was great!

By the way, they were right on target when they explained the bit about once extra snow and ice forms, it's going to cause more sunlight to be reflected into space instead of being absorbed by the Earth, causing further cooling, causing more snow and ice, etc: a chain reaction leading to an ice age.

The latest scientific theories say this is exactly how ice ages started. It's not some slow process that takes hundreds or thousands of years to take hold. Ice ages (according to current scientific theory) do in fact happen fairly fast.

Similarly for the hot ages. Ice starts to melt, and then the earth is not able to reflect it into space as well, so the earch heats up, melting more ice, etc... another chain reaction.

We went Friday night and I enjoyed it, although

I really liked it the first time, when it was called "Independence Day"

I love how the tidal wave that flooded Manhattan came from behind the Statue of Liberty. You know what's behind the Statue of Liberty? NEW JERSEY! Where the hell did that wave come from? The Hudson River?

I thought it was a very entertaining comedy. Just a question... when I saw it, the audience laughed any time the Vice-President or President were on the screen... anybody else?

Doesn't the Atlantic Ocean connect to the bay that contains Liberty Island?

I liked how this movie had lots and lots of death happening. I just wish we could have seen more of it close up.

I liked it when the reporter was killed by the billboard right as he was talking.

Posted by: PJO1966

Yes... to the south, or to Liberty's right. The wave came from behind IIRC.

The theater I went to had a lot of Hispanics in the audience, and when it came to the part where Mexico shut down the borders due to all the American refugees, there was a lot of applause ;)

There was a lot of laughter here in LA as well.

I like a dumb movie as much as anyone, and this one fit the bill pretty well. Once the cool effects were over, we had fun MSTing through the endless blathering and pontificating. :)

Went to see it Sat night. I thought it was a great dumb movie. Lots of over acting and very good FX. People laughed a couple times here too. Closing of the border then the reason they opened the boarder too. There was a couple other parts too but they don't come to mind right now.

I had a good time at the movie... the only thing that bothered me was the predictability of it...

Spoiler Space

you know like how the wolves escaped the zoo and you just KNOW they were going to show up later on in the movie...
Another thing that bothered me is the Sela Ward character and her insistance on getting an ambulance for little timmy the cancer patient... WHERE WERE THEY GONNA GET ONE? And MAGICALLY later on one shows up...

Other than that, I thought it was enjoyable, and the effects were really amazing.

When the Quade (?) the actor who plays the lead first showed up speaking at the conference, I thought he looked a bit like Gore so when the VP turned out to look exactly like Cheney, I laughed. (The word, Jerk was heard in reference to that character.)

I saw it in a mostly white town in the high desert of California and the Mexico immigration line got a good laugh.

Yeah, the Troposphere is the lower part of the atmosphere. I would have to dig hard to find the book this movie is based on to see if they meant Stratosphere. I looked up the Troposphere and it goes up about 10 miles. An airliner flys at about 5 or 6 miles and the air outside was between 30 and 60 below so it could happen that 10 miles up the air would be colder.

The movie is actually based on The Coming Global Superstorm which was written by Art Bell and Whitney Streiber.

But by fast, they mean decades instead of centuries. (and even that is controversial.) Weeks or days is just plain silly.

Not that I mind--the movie is incredibly silly, but also very entertaining, and I wasn't looking for a documentary.

If Manhattan got flooded and then frozen over then where did the wolves come from?

They escaped from an animal shelter.

Posted by: ufo4sale

You think they would survive all that?

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs

Wolves' native habitat is places like Northern Minnesota... (Hence the basketball team, the Timberwolves.)

Yes, I've been wondering exactly what 'quick' was. I had a feeling that 'days' was unrealistic, but I wasn't sure - all I had heard was that the newest theories have ice ages occurring much faster than previously thought.

Exactly the same for me.

Did noone else have a problem with the CGI wolves? They looked horrible! And when did they get the ability to chew through concrete and escape the cage they were in?

The wall behind them was collapsed by the damage caused by the tsunami.

I heard there were politics in it, I don't like politics in my entertainment. Is it like that?

Posted by: DougF

It wasn't really bluntly political. But, there was kind of an environmentalist-slanted message in it. Those folks tend to be on one distinct side politically.

My bad. But the wolves still looked really bad.

Well the vice president kind of resembles Cheney, physically, but they don't come right out and say that. Still, the vice president is portrayed as not making wise decisions, except in the end of the movie, when he gets smarter. So, I'm not really sure if there's a political message there.

Posted by: PJO1966

yes, the wolves looked bad.

as for the political, it was mentioned that the VP strongly resembled Cheney. Also, once the President was briefed on the situation he turned to the VP and asked "what do you think?" as if he wasn't making his own decisions.

Posted by: timckelley

I never got the impression from "what do you think?" that he wasn't making his own decisions.

Posted by: sieglinde

The "Bush" character actually was shown in a better light than the "Cheney" character. "Bush" overrode one of the VPs heartless decisions. Once "Bush" was briefed he was up to speed. The earlier briefings had only been to the VP.

I saw a sneak preview last Thursday, so only one day before the movie came out, and I'm glad I did because I would have been pissed if I had paid to see it!

Now, I love a straight up action/disaster/fluff movie as much as the next person. Pirates of the Caribbean is one of my favorites movies, I adore The Rock, and I could watch Independence Day every day of the year (just to name a few).

But boy was this movie BAD. And not bad in the fun to watch and laugh at because it is so ridiculous that even though it sucks your having a good time way. It was bad in the BAD way.

First off, I already saw everything that was good about the movie in the ten minute preview that was on Fox a few weeks ago. Every good FX scene was shown in the 10min preview, as well as any half-decent dialog.

Second, the movie needed a MUCH better editor. It was at least a 1/2 hour too long and so many of the scenes were arbitrary and added nothing to the plot whatsoever. The entire "wolf" story-line, besides having some of the worst CG animals ever on film (I have a hard time believing making the wolve CG was cheaper than using real wolves, but whatever, I guess that's why the CG was bad), they added absolutely nothing to the story. I think it was M. Night Shyamlan in one of his commentaries said that if a scene is not developing either the plot or a character, then it doesn't belong in the movie. Nearly every scene in the library applied. What was the point of the girl's leg getting cut and them having to get medicine? They are already in a life and death situation, we already know he has a thing for the chick and is willing to do anything for her, WHAT WAS THE POINT???

*deep breathe*

And what was up with the ice monster? You know, when the stratosphere suddenly comes down and the temp drops to hundreds below zero and everything freezes instantly? Well, that I can believe a little bit, and at first it was semi-realistic, as it showed the ice monster descending vertically. But when the kids are running to the fire in the library, suddenly the ice monster moves vertically! It's coming at them from all sides! Run! It's going to get you!

Worst dialog ever. Average special effects ruined by the preview. Too many stupid characters and pointless scenes. Please, give me an action movie with good action, good FX, half-way decent dialouge, that is funny and exciting, and I'll be happy. This was just about the complete opposite of that.
