Huh. Silly me for thinking it was spontaneous and they weren't fishing for stories ahead of time.

That generates mixed feelings. I'm sort of, I dunno, disappointed it's not "real" in the sense that it's totally spontaneous... But if these fished for stories mean less of the "I'm Late - I'm Drunk - Whaddayamean I Have to Pay For My 3-Year-Old" cycle, good for them. I'll give the new season a chance.

They already had examples of this type of story on the first season, such as the woman who was going to L.A. to be on "The Price Is Right," and the penguins from Sea World.

I don't like things like this. Perhaps Southwest got tired of most of their stories being about denied boarding and drunk passengers and people didn't want to fly them, so they started to request stories like this?
And if you're closing multi-million dollar deals, why are you flying Southwest???

They were fishing for stories from the start. Some friends of mine were supposed to be featured about their trip west to attend three baseball games in three cities. They didn't end up on the show, but this was prior to the first season.

I am warming up in the mirror right now:
"I was here in time for my flight... I was right over there at the bar (belching alcohol)." <turns to camera crew> "I am never flying southwest again... I'm tellin ya...." <turning to passengers> "I am an American Citizen, they can't treat me like this"

At least this keeps them from showing more segments like the group of four guys searching Midway airport for Eminem, based on a hunch of "a guy they know".

Oh, that was painful to watch... What losers.

Too bad it has to be Southwest. I have a horrific fear of flying and haven't done it in years and I'm flying to Colorado in July. Being filmed might be just enough of a distraction to keep me from dying as my blood vessels burst from worry. :)

You didn't think any of those are setup ahead of time?
They just happen to have the camera crew at the arriving city or do they hold a plane load of people so the camera crew can run off setup at the Jetway exit then start letting people out?
It's really obvious (to me) on This Old House/Ask This Old House.

I'd bet lots of shows do this. At the beginning of the first season of Restaurant, I remember reading an article that said they were offering free meals to anyone who would guarantee an "event" during their meal.

Adent, they have like 4 cities they have cameras in. Undoubtedly, they make lots of flights between them, so no reason they couldn't be in both cities...

Well watching the show has really made me want to fly southwest (not)
We take the late eveing flight of aloha along with the early morning come back on our many trips to vegas.
Kind of like getting a seat assigned ahead of time not the cattle call of southwest . Now do they pay you to be on the show or do you just get to see yourself .

I thought that you only had to be really drunk at an airport bar or too fat to sit in a coach seat to be featured on Airline.....

As an airline employee, the last thing I want is to be on one of those shows. Not for any reason!! Thank goodness I don't work at Southwest. I'd be cringing if one of these stories ran into me. ;)

Me too! How can Southwest take this kind of publicity, the overbooking a flight by 58 people, I mean after watching this it really makes you want to stay away from this airline.

All airlines overbook, even by 58 people on occasion. I still avoid southwest because of the assigned seat issue. I used to drive to my parents in providence to catch a direct flight to orlando on Southwest, the last time I just bit the bullet when to JFK and took Song, much nicer flight in my opinion.

You better start practicing saying:
quote:
F! Southwest
Into the mirror.

Don't get used to Song. Delta's hemorrhaging red ink and Song won't be around in a couple of years.

Even without Song, I don't think that they would drop direct flights from NY. There is also JetBlue who I haven't tried yet.

No kidding! Southwest has started flying out of Philly, but I think I'll stick with USAir for my rare trips.
With no interline agreements, if you get bumped or the flight doesn't go, you're stuck. I'd rather pay a little more money and get a chance of re-routing, and I totally agree with getting a seat in advance.

Right. But on one episode they follow a young UM (Unaccompanied Minor) and is actually onboard the A/C (aircraft) during the flight.
I think the desitnation was Las Vegas, IIRC not a city they normally film in. LA and Midway being the big filiming cities.
Don't forget about the two employees throwing out the first pitch at a Cubs game. That is not a regular filming location and I doubt the Tribune company would allow spontaneous filming on the field without prior permission and the express written consent from MLB (I know of one Chicago DJ who was not allowed to call his station (On Air) from the game on a cell phone while on Tribune property).
Most of it is spontaneous, but there are obviously setup ahead of time bits too (which while preplanned, I assume are largely unscripted).

They left off:
Are you obese?
Are you homeless and haven't bathed in weeks?
Are you unable to fly unless you are inebriated?
Do you require oxygen or are you wheelchair bound due to a health condition?
Do you have difficulty speaking English?
Is your destination the funeral of a family member or loved one?
Are you just an ***hole in general?
I've gotten pretty bored with the show. No wonder they're looking for fresh meat.
