Dieting

Recently I started a diet... I really try to think of it as a lifestyle change, 'cause for me it will probably take over a year before I get to where I want to get.

I'm basically trying to limit my intake of food to less than 2000 calories a day, closer to 1500 if possible. I'm not really trying any specific diet such as Low Carb or South Beach or Aiken's or whatever... just trying to balance what I eat more, which involves more veggies and fruits, less red meats more fish, no refined sugar products such as sodas or chocolate or other desert items.

Anyway, I began by writing down everything caloric I eat or drink. If it has zero calories such as water or diet pop, I don't bother. A buddy of mine is my "coach" and he created a "Calorie Worksheet" to keep track.

For exercise to start I'm mostly walking as much as possible at a brisk gait. I've been a sloth for such a long time I dont' want to kill myself right at the start.

Then I found this site called MyFoodDiary.com. It's really cool... It has a huge database of foods and their nutritional values. If a food isn't in there, you can put it in there, assuming you have the nutritional label off of the food package. If you have a recipe, you can input all of the ingrediants, and it calculates a calorie estimate of what you're eating. You can also track exercise and body measurements.

Also, when a day is finished, it analyzes what you've done and congratulates you for a job well done, or chides you for say, going over the recommended fat intake for the day.

Pretty cool site. The reason I chose it is it was closest to what I was trying to do. No gimmicks, just straight calorie and exercise monitoring.

Has anyone else done something similar online? Are there other sites to use that may be more useful?

I've found it's infinitely easier to keep a cap on the calories if I just don't go out to eat. It's hard or impossible when I'm travelling though. Then I just kind of have to watch and just eat about half whatever comes on the plate (assuming I didn't order something vastly unhealthy.)

I've been on and off diets here and there. Nothing worked, I tried Atkins. Didn't lose a pound. I finally decided to try Weight Watchers. It works like a charm. I just love the points way of doing things. In a nutshell, I've been going there for 8 weeks, and have lost a total of 20.4 pounds. I'm down two pant sizes, and a shirt size. The best thing is that I'm never hungry. I actually find it difficult to eat all the points I'm supposed to in a day. You should definitly give it a look. PM me if you have any questions. Also, you should try a website called Dotti's Weight Loss Zone. Very informative!

That's the site I use. Here's a file for you to use as well. It tells you how many calories you need to eat per day in order to lose a certain amount of weight. If you have a LOT to lose, you can expect about 3-5 pounds for the first week or two if you eat right and work out, after that, it will taper off to about 1-2 pounds a week. But think about it, a year from now, you could have lost 52 pounds if you just lose a pound a week. Not too shabby, eh?

You can also PM if you want to ask any questions. If you're into working out, I can sell you a book (on the cheap I might add) I have, called Testosterone Advantage Plan. It gives you work outs to do, and recipes for foods. The book taught me alot on which exercised to be doing, and what not to do. How doing too much cardio is bad. It also emphasized doing HITT (High Intensity Interval Training.) Basically it's where you spring, then walk, sprint, then walk. Much better than doing steady state cardio for 2 hours, and this takes as little as 20 mins a day. Again, PM me with any questions you may have.

Go here and read too! Lots of pictures and this site is what gave me the motivation to get out there and start getting in better shape!

On the exercise side www.sportbrain.com is pretty cool. It has a monthly fee as well though. You buy a special electronic pedometer gadget at Radio Shack and wear it all the time. Every so often you upload the data on it to the web site and you get to analyze how much exercise you're getting, both intentional and unintentional.

Getting sick of these montly fees though.
