Best Steve McQueen movie?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Tivo'd & watched Papillon the other night on USA Network. What a great movie! I remember seeing a few other McQueen flicks when I was a kid, but don't remember much about them. Sure I've seen The Blob, but what movies were great roles for SM? Is LeMans any good?

Posted by: TomK

'The Great Escape' is especially good. He was also in 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'Bullitt'.

The Great Escape, Papillon, and Bullit. I'm a race fan and LeMans may be the best racing footage ever shot ... not the best movie, but incredible cinematography.

The Getaway

The Cincinnati Kid, The Sand Pebbles, Junior Bonner, The Thomas Crown Affair...plus all the other ones mentioned.

Man, I STILL miss him.

There is no "best" movie -- they're all different, and most of them are good.

How about all of the above?

Did he do a bad movie? ;)

Thanks! Looks like NetFlix will get some business this summer

Bah no library is complete without the Great Escape. No character is quite as compelling as the "Cooler King".

Agreed. Excellent, excellent movie. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Completely agree, but thought I'd better throw a caveat in here. Be wary of buying a used DVD copy of "The Great Escape." The original transfer and encoding were terrible, and somewhat fuzzy. They corrected the problems with a later release, and if you buy a shrink-wrapped new copy, it's fine.

Figured I'd send up the warning, just in case someone finds what looks like a great deal on a used copy.

OK, time to grab my mitt and ball, and go back into my coo... I mean, my office. :)

I have to say one of the sexiest movie scenes that didn't involve nakedness, or kissing or touching was the chess match from The Thomas Crown Affair.

I know Fay Dunaway has faded, and the make-up and dresses are way out of date, but that's one hot scene.

I'd vote for Bullitt, by a wide margin. Great setting in San Francisco, anti-establishment persona for McQueen (like Dirty Harry), and of course the car chase. The director of The French Connection (William Friedkin?) said he had this episode constantly in mind when he set up and filmed that movie's famous chase scene.

I don't think Steve McQueen knew how to make a bad movie. But my current favorite McQueen movies are Nevada Smith and The Sand Pebbles

One of my guilty pleasures is The Hunter even though today it seems more like the pilot for a TV show than a feature motion picture but it was nice to see McQueen working with Eli Wallach again and I liked McQueen's gruff, cranky performance

What he said!!!!

Steve died much too young.

As a retired guy holding the same rank as Steve in The Towering Inferno, I liked that one!

The best scene Steve McQueen ever had was in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN when Eli Wallach had recaptured the Mexican village and asked The Seven why they took the job.

McQueen takes it upon himself to answer: "I knew a guy once who took off all his clothes and jumped a mess of catcus. Folks asked him why he would do such a thing."

Wallach: "And? What did he say?"

McQueen: "It seemed like a good idea at the time"

To me, that became the ulitmate tough/cool guy answer for the usually incredibly crazy situations they got into: "It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time."

I just read through this thread and thought "It's time to catch me some McQueen"! So I checked my Tivo and discovered that TCM is having a mini-marathon tonight. All uninterrupted, all letterbox:

Papillon
The Blob
The Thomas Crown Affair
Never So Few

Woohoo! Starts at 5pm here; I think that's 8pm Eastern (i.e., that I don't get a delayed TCM feed).

I hadn't seen The Blob in something like ten years and I had really forgotten just how much FUN an old-fashioned monster movie can be. I said to myself that I would catch the first half hour and let the TiVo record the rest and watch it later. Before I knew it, I was really into the movie and watched it all the way through.

And you just gotta love that theme song.:D

Great Escape. Once he started with the baseball in the end, I knew it was his best.

The Sand Pebbles gets my vote.

McQueen, a young Candice Bergen and a good story.

Steve played Steve in almost every movie he made - that's all there was to it. I'm surprised there's only one mention of here of "The Hunter." IMO his best and also his last film, based on the "true" story of bounty hunter Ralph "Papa" Thorsen.

McQueen was reportedly not an easy man to get along or work with. His warmest role would have been his "Wanted Dead or Alive" TV series.

The pop-up boxes on the new DVD version of The Great Escape mention that he took the role because The Cooler King was a loner like he was and that he (the character) had to learn to get along with others to accomplish something great (he couldn't do it alone). That isn't exactly what it says but it's close enough.

I am said to say The Great Escape is the only Steve McQueen movie I have seen. I tried watching The Thomas Crowne Affair but it didn't quite catch on. I've seen bits and pieces of The Cincinnati Kid and have never seen The Magnificant Seven (not the biggest fan of westerns that don't have Clint Eastwood. Those always seem to catch my attention.
