Tivo box stopped working after 5 months

I paid $150 for my Tivo 5 months ago. Now it no longer works (just get constant Welcome screen) and Tivo wants $99 to replace it with a refurbished one. Apparently they only stand behind their product for 90 days.

Is this my only option? Now I'm hooked. Tivo has transformed the way I watch TV. But am I doomed to live with the risk that I may have to replace my unit every few months?

Is there any do it yourself service that I can attempt before spending another $99. Hell, I could get a new one on ebay for that.

Can anyone offer any help or advise.

I would say your 5-month life is not typical... What are your computer skills? You likely have a hard drive issue. You could try making a backup of your drive, and restoring to a new drive. That may or may not work, depending on the issue with your drive. You can also find an image of your unit online, and restore it to you drive, or to a new drive. Y ou also have the option of purchasing a pre-loaded drive from some sites, like Weaknees. How you proceed will depend on your comfort livel of digging in...

Thanks for your repsponse. I would say that my comfort level is high. But assuming that a clean backup is not possible given that some level of hard drive failure has already occured, where would be the best place to find an online image for my unit? Also, will any PC compatible HD do, or is there a set of Tivo compliant ones from which I must choose. Thanks again!

Sometimes you CAN backup the drive even if your Tivo doesn't like it. The things are notoriously picky. Try a minimal transfer (kill recordings and settings) and see what happens.
Failing that you might try the InstantCake CDs 9th Tee is selling. (Have virgin drive images plus relatively easy install.) $19.95 plus a 120-gig HD should still come out cheaper ($65 for HD as of my last look at PriceWatch) than $100 for a refurb unit.
Of course, if it isn't the drive you're left holding the bag. (Well, the bag plus some nice upgrade eqipment so it's not a total loss.) Try minimally backing up the old HD with MFSTools first, and if that bombs you know what's wrong, then upgrade or replace the unit as necessary.
